CDOT, CSP urge motorcycle safety
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the Colorado Department of Transportation is working with Colorado State Patrol to encourage motorists to put safety first.
'Unfortunately, our roadways are increasingly becoming unsafe for motorcyclists,' says Sam Cole, traffic safety manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Motorcycle deaths in the state have risen by 57% in the last decade. Cole says there are a few notable contributing factors.
'When it comes to motorcyclists, it's a problem with them riding too fast, or they're impaired by drugs or alcohol, or they just don't have on helmets.'
Cole also says fatal crashes frequently happen at intersections where it can be hard for drivers to see motorcyclists.
'That's why it's so important, especially at intersections, to be looking for those non-vehicle entities, those bicyclists, those motorcyclists… There's some drivers of passenger vehicles out there that are distracted. They're not paying attention. That's why motorcyclists need to need to wear their helmets because you can't always avoid a crash.'
According to CDOT, 44% of motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2024 were not wearing a helmet.
He also reminds motorcyclists of the difference between lane filtering, made legal in Colorado in August 2024, and lane splitting.
'Lane splitting is when motorcycles will pass in between vehicles that are moving on the roadway. That is illegal, highly illegal. But lane filtering, passing those stopped vehicles so you can get to the front of the line and out of harm's way is legal,' says Cole.
He says lane filtering is a good way for motorcyclists to get to the front of the line of traffic so they aren't hit from behind.
Cole encourages motorcyclists to not only wear safety gear like boots, gloves and a helmet, but also to 'keep your speeds down, obey the law, and don't ride impaired.'
As for drivers, Cole says, 'They just need to be more aware that there's other people on our roadways besides cars and trucks.'
At the end of the day, Cole says it's important for all motorists to be mindful on the road.
'I don't want to pin this only on drivers of vehicles or riders of motorcycles. It's really everybody that's contributing to this problem on our roads.'

Colorado State Patrol asks drivers to respect lane filtering motorcyclists
DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol is urging drivers to respect motorcyclists engaged in lane filtering, with summer riding season officially underway. First and foremost, CSP said it is important for drivers to understand the difference between lane splitting, which is illegal, and lane filtering, which was legalized last year and took effect last August. What's the difference between lane filtering and lane splitting — and which one is legal? 'The first thing Coloradoans need to understand is that there is a seemingly small but important difference between lane filtering and lane splitting,' CSP Chief Col. Matthew C. Packard said in a statement. 'One maneuver is legal, and the other remains prohibited, so let's all start by getting on the same page.' Lane filtering is when a motorcyclist passes other cars that are at a complete stop. Lane splitting, meanwhile, is when a rider rides in-between cars that are in motion. According to the new law, the CSP says these five rules must be followed: To pass, traffic in the rider's lane and adjacent lanes going the same direction must be at a complete stop The lane must be wide enough to fit the vehicle and motorcycle while passing The motorcycle must go 15 mph or less The rider must pass safely and control the motorcycle The rider must pass on the left and not enter the oncoming traffic lane Sign up for the FOX31 Denver Guide weekly newsletter for events and activities 'It's up to the rider to assess each situation and determine if the conditions are safe and legal to filter – it's an option, not a requirement to filter,' Packard said. 'It is also the responsibility of every motorist to share the road. Drive with etiquette and with the law in mind. Respecting each other and driving without distractions will make our commutes faster and safer.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. US 50 bridges construction hours change Sunday
MONTROSE AND GUNNISON COUNTIES, Colo. (KREX) — On Wednesday, the Colorado Department of Transportation and Kiewit Infrastructure Co. announced that they are altering the work hours for crews applying the final coat of paint to repaired steel on the US Highway 50 Middle Bridge and Lake Fork Bridge. On Sunday, June 8, construction crews will work from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday through Friday. Flaggers will direct single-lane traffic over each bridge. This is the final phase of the emergency repair project, scheduled for completion by the end of July. The emergency repair project began in April 2024, when several steel weld cracks were detected in the US 50 Middle Bridge and similar defects were found in the US 50 Lake Fork Bridge. Both bridges had partial closures after the cracks were detected for public safety. 'Because the paint adheres better in warmer temperatures, we're moving up our work hours slightly to take advantage of more daylight as we enter the homestretch of this repair project,' said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Jason Smith. 'We appreciate the community's continued support as we close out this critical safety project.' The travel impacts of the scheduled maintenance include: Nighttime work hours from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday through Friday. Travel over each bridge is reduced to a single lane. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph in the work zones. . Overnight painting work will not take place over the Fourth of July weekend.
