Rain, returning flock choke GST road
Chennai: Rain and returning weekend travellers brought traffic to a grinding halt on GST Road and adjoining highways on Sunday evening, with vehicles crawling bumper to bumper from Chengalpet to Tambaram.
With the long Independence Day weekend drawing to a close, thousands who travelled to their hometowns converged on the city at the same time. Traffic snarls were reported at several bottlenecks, including Perungalathur, Vandalur, Kattankulathur, and Singaperumal Koil, where rainwater logging slowed down vehicle movement further. Vehicles lined up for over a kilometre at Paranur toll plaza in Chengalpet, with all lanes choked.
"I started from Maduranthakam early, but I ended up spending more than four hours in traffic. It was a nightmare," said Ananthakrishnan, a private firm employee, who got stuck near the Perungalathur bridge.
"Traffic diversions for heavy vehicles have been put in place at SP Koil (main diversion), Guduvanchery, ORR and Zero Point for all Chennai-bound vehicles," said Samai Singh Meena, deputy commissioner of police, traffic, Tambaram
