No selfies or reels in uniform, orders Rewa DIG after inspector signs files to hit Aarzoo song

In the reel uploaded on social media, Ankita Mishra, inspector-in-charge of Sagra police station in Rewa district, was seen signing official files and pausing to mimic the lyrics and gestures of the popular song, ' Ab tere dil mein hum aa gaye ' from the 1999 movie Aarzoo featuring Madhuri Dixit and Akshay Kumar. The order by Rewa division Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajesh Singh Chandel, issued after a police inspector posted a reel recreating a Bollywood song while signing official files, said such behaviour hurt the image of the police force. Bhopal: Police in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district have barred officers from taking selfies or filming social media reels while in uniform, warning that any officer posting such content will face disciplinary action. The reel went viral on Instagram, drawing sharp criticism with several users suggesting Mishra should spend her time in the Mumbai film industry instead of the police force. In his order issued after the reel went viral, Chandel said, 'It has been frequently observed that some police personnel, while in uniform and on duty, are taking selfies and posting them on social media in a stylish/inappropriate/viral manner.' 'The Police Department is a disciplined force, and any such behavior by police personnel is considered indiscipline and brings disrepute to the department. This negatively affects the image of the police among the public,' he added. The order noted that despite repeated instructions, police officers and continued to engage in such behaviour. 'Not refraining from such conduct also shows a lack of seriousness towards their duty but also reveals the officer/employee's own poor intentions,' Chandel said in his order. 'If any such post is published on social media in any way, then the concerned officer/employee will be considered guilty of violating departmental discipline, and strict disciplinary action will be taken against them. The concerned employee will be solely responsible for the consequences of such actions.' Before Ankita Mishra, head constable Sanjay Verma from City Kotwali police station in Rewa had made several reels on popular Bollywood songs while on duty on April 16. Many of these reels had gone viral on social media, leading Superintendent of Police Vivek Singh to issue a show cause notice to her. Last year, in May 2024, another constable from Rewa had made a reel on a song in support of Samajwadi Chief Akhilesh Yadav while on duty. Vivek Singh had transferred the constable after the reel. After repeated incidents and previous disciplinary action failing to work as a deterrent, a formal order was issued, cautioning police officers and personnel. The order called for immediate compliance and asked all station heads to inform their staff and obtain their signatures in the station diary within the next three days. Shah targets Cong, its allies: Important to keep alive memories of Emergency, the challenge to democracy

Targeting the Congress and its allies for 'raising questions about democracy and the Constitution', Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking in New Delhi Tuesday on the eve of 50 years of the imposition of Emergency, said it is necessary that memories of the Emergency do not fade away, so that the youth are able to recall this challenge to democracy. He said a book by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the theme would be released Wednesday. Recalling that 1.1 lakh people were imprisoned dinuring the 21-month Emergency, Shah attacked the Congress and its allies. 'There are those who talk about the Constitution. Which party do they come from? At 8 am, Indira Gandhi announced the Emergency on AIR. Was the Cabinet consulted? Was the Opposition consulted?' he said, adding, 'Today there are those with the Congress who were in jail during the Emergency. Be it Samajwadi or DMK. Today they are sitting with the Congress and raising questions about democracy and the Constitution.' He said during the Emergency, many careers took surprising turns and also ended. But that fight kept Indian democracy alive, he said. 'We won the fight because the people of our country can never accept dictatorship. Our country has been the mother of democracy. Citizens would not have liked the Emergency, I am sure,' he said. He said the night of June 25, 1975 was the longest as well as the shortest night of independent India. 'The dawn of the night of June 25 came 21 months later. Our Constitution was made in more than two years, but the kitchen cabinet cancelled it in one minute. It was the longest night as well as the shortest night of the country.' Describing the imposition of Emergency as a conspiracy to turn a multi-party democracy into the dictatorship of an individual, Shah said, 'Just imagine the moment when you became subjects of a tyrant within a day. You were a journalist or a student but suddenly became a danger to the country.' Recalling the period of Emergency in Gujarat when he was just 11 years old, Shah said it hit hard a year later than the rest of the country when the Janata government was dismissed. 'As many as 184 people from my village were sent to jail,' he recalled. 'When the Supreme Court said that Indiraji could not vote in Parliament, she used provisions of the Constitution to destroy the Constitution,' he said. 'There was no danger to the country. Her post was in danger. So, she imposed the Emergency. She called a Cabinet meeting early in the morning and the Cabinet was told about it.' 'Democratic rights were ended and powers of the judiciary were reduced. That is why we have decided to observe the Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' he said. 'There were 4,000 MISA detenus in Tihar Jail while the capacity was just 1,200. One-crore forced sterilisations were done. I remember Lata Mangeshkar singing also for Kishore Kumar, as the latter was banned,' he said. He recalled when Jayaprakash Narayan was arrested, he said, 'Vinash Kale Vipreet Buddhi.' JP also wrote to Indira Gandhi that she was taking wrong decisions to justify her wrong actions, he said. Recalling the happiness of people in Gujarat when Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi were defeated in the 1977 elections, Shah said, 'The Congress lost its former heft after the Emergency. This is a lesson for political parties: whatever the ideology, the aim is to make the country great. The mindset that there should be only one ideology, that only I am correct, will not work.' Underlining that democracy was intrinsic to India, he said the Constitution just articulated the country's national democratic thoughts into the founding document of the state. 'Democracy was born in our country. We had republics like Vaishali. Our Constitution is a creation of this intrinsic nature of our country. The roots of our democracy are so deep that any dictator wanting to destroy it will only damage his own future,' he said. Asserting that people, and not just institutions, have the duty to defend democracy, he exhorted the youth to read the Shah Commission report as 'it will inspire them to stand like JP against any threat to democracy'.

SC stays trial against former Samajwadi Party MP in arms case

New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the trial in a 2007 arms case against a former Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha MP who claimed "harassment" owing to political vendetta. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol and Sandeep Mehta noted the submissions of lawyer Rohit A Sthalekar, appearing for former Mirzapur MP Bal Kumar Patel. The counsel argued the motive behind the criminal cases was to "harass the petitioner and tarnish his political career'. 'You belong to which party?' Justice Nath asked. The lawyer responded, 'I am a former MP. I am in the Samajwadi party.' The bench then ordered, 'Issue notice. There will be a stay of the proceedings in the criminal case before the trial court .' The former MP from UP sought quashing of the FIR and moved the top court against an April 7 Allahabad High Court order which dismissed his plea to quash the criminal proceedings stemming from a 2007 Arms Act case. 'Petitioner is a former Member of Parliament from District Mirzapur and is a well respected and accomplished politician. Due to political rivalry, numerous frivolous and vexatious complaints came to be registered against him during his political career in which the Petitioner stood exonerated," his plea argued. The former legislator called the FIR against him "vexatious and frivolous" filed under various provisions of the Arms Act, 1959 for allegedly procuring an arms licence on the basis of forged documents and possessing ammunition over the prescribed limit with the firearm. A chargesheet was later filed against Patel. The high court dismissed his plea observing the state government wasn't inclined to withdraw the case and Patel lacked the right to compel the state to seek such permission. The FIR against him was filed on June 12, 2007 but Patel argued no misuse of the licensed weapon was ever established. His plea referred to a 2012 decision of the district magistrate reinstating his firearm license upon ruling out any wrongdoing. A government order of August 6, 2014 authorised the public prosecutor to seek withdrawal of the prosecution in public interest, the plea added. However, the trial court rejected the withdrawal application on October 8, 2021, citing the Supreme Court's 2021 judgment which mandated high court's permission before withdrawal of cases against MPs and MLAs. The high court in its 2025 ruling held the state's inaction signalled an intention to continue with the prosecution. The plea said despite a clear GO and the public prosecutor's support for withdrawal, the state government failed to seek the nod of the high court in a timely manner.
