How to make chemistry fun for kids
Why is breakfast cereal magnetic? How does sand help you to see? Why did that German guy try to turn wee into gold and what did he find instead? Elements of the Day doesn't just blast off soon-to-be-forgotten facts about the periodic table. It tells the story of chemical elements in our everyday lives by fusing them with the daily, domestic moments that will be familiar to every child. It's a clever formula — and an effective one. From wake up to bedtime, we are introduced to many of the scientific miracles that are happening all around us. 'Elements — and all the stuff you can build from them — make every part of your day possible in unexpected and fascinating ways, though most people don't give them much thought. However, once you open your eyes, you'll start seeing lots of these elements in your daily life,' the author Samantha Lewis says as she urges young readers to experiment with their breakfast.

Welshpool hosts Montgomeryshire County Music Festival
For the first time in more than 100 years, the Montgomeryshire County Music Festival (MCMF) choir staged its 2025 annual concert in Welshpool. Over the past decades, the Montgomeryshire County Music Festival concerts have been held in Newtown, with the venue being just infrequently located in Llanidloes. But this year it was Welshpool's Methodist Chapel that hosted the annual event on Saturday, May 10. Under the baton of resident musical director Patrick Larley, who was conducting the choir for the 15th year in succession, the 56 Montgomeryshire-based choristers were joined by mezzo soprano Samantha Lewis, soprano Sarah-Ann Cromwell, tenor William Smith and baritone Ben Watkins. The original 1921 MCMF choral society included more than 1,000 voices from 19 north Powys communities, but today it has whittled itself down to two separate area branches: Welshpool and Llanidloes. True to its century-long reputation of staging quality performances of world-renowned choral masterpieces, two major works - Antonín Dvořák's celebrated Romantic period Mass in D Major (Op.86) and Karl Jenkins ' Sacred Songs collection - were this year performed in front of packed-out audiences. The evening's musical accompaniment was provided by the highly acclaimed local freelance accompanist and repetiteur Aeron Preston; who masterfully supplied the organ accompaniment for the Dvořák's Mass in the first part, and the equally atmospheric and adept accompaniment on the grand piano, for Jenkins' Sacred Songs in the second part, of the concert. A spokesperson for MCMF said: 'The appreciative final applause confirmed that an exceptionally splendid musical evening had been experienced by everyone present.

IW students, teachers work to commemorate 250th anniversary of Virginia's founding
ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — The Old Dominion state is turning 250 next year, and Isle of Wight County Schools faculty and students have been working overtime to commemorate the occasion. Over the last year, they've been putting together a podcast series paired with creative writing pieces collectively called 'Revolutionary Roots.' 'The project's central inquiry, 'How did agriculture, livestock, and major conflicts shape the founding of Isle of Wight County, and how do we see these influences today?' served as the guiding theme for student research and creative production,' according to a press release. 'Using primary and secondary sources, students investigated local history through the lenses of agriculture, education, indigenous relations and the Revolutionary War.' The project was spearheaded by three teachers: Zachary Kempf and Samantha Lewis from Smithfield High School, and Heather Byrum from Windsor High School. The students worked with local historical societies and libraries, gaining access to historical documents and modern digital tools. 'Field trips to local landmarks, such as the Isle of Wight County Museum, St. Luke's Historic Church and Museum and the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse, provided immersive experiences and access to valuable historical materials,' the release reads. 'Revolutionary Roots' is part of the larger VA 250 initiative, which aims to encourage community reflection on our collective history. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
