Brettenwood and IMATU paint a brighter future for Sizani on Mandela Day
In the true spirit of Mandela Day, a team from Brettenwood Estate and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) joined forces last Friday to transform Sizani School, leaving a lasting mark well beyond the symbolic 67 minutes of service.
Led by Brettenwood marketing manager Samantha Subban and Imatu's Simphiwe Magagula, the group rolled up their sleeves to revitalise the school hall, a vital space used for both learning and community events.
'Just beyond our estate lies a school filled with potential, a place where children deserve spaces that inspire learning, creativity and pride. Our time at Sizani reminded us that every act of service, no matter how small, can create lasting change,' said Subban.
Armed with paintbrushes and determination, the volunteers gave the facility a bright new look, breathing fresh energy into the environment.
Nelson Mandela famously once said: 'What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others' – a sentiment clearly embodied by the group.
Their efforts served as a powerful reminder that small, collective acts of kindness can ignite meaningful change, especially in the lives of young pupils who rely on safe, welcoming spaces to grow and thrive.
