Red choora still on her wrists, wife bids adieu to Ludhiana soldier; cremated with full military honours
Draped in tricolor, the body of Lance Naik Pritpal Singh, 27, from Manupur village of Ludhiana district, reached his village Sunday and the cremation was performed with full military honours. He was killed in action during a gunfight with terrorists in South Kashmir's Kulgam, Friday. He had got married just five months ago. The Operation which started nine days ago at Kashmir's Akhal Forest, is among the longest military operations against terrorists in the Valley in the recent years. His newly wedded wife Manpreet Kaur bid him adieu with red choora (bangles) still on her wrists and mehendi (henna) on her hands. In Punjab, the red choora is worn by new brides for at least six months after marriage. The couple had got married just five months ago on February 24 and since then Pritpal hadn't come home on leave to spend time with Manpreet. The family was expecting him on Diwali to celebrate the newlywed couple's first festival together in their recently renovated house. Speaking to The Indian Express, Harbans Singh, father of the deceased soldier said: 'We have been devastated. Just two days ago on August 8, my daughter-in-law Manpreet had applied mehendi (henna) on her hands as she was preparing for Raksha Bandhan festivities and had to go to parents house to tie Raakhi to her brother. My son (Pritpal) had sent some money to buy whatever she wanted for the festival. The same day my son died fighting the terrorists in Kashmir. She is our like our daughter.' 'Since the day they got married in February, they did not spend much time together as he had left for duty immediately after marriage. We were expecting him on Diwali to celebrate but he will never return now,' said the wailing father. Samrala MLA Jagtar Singh Diyalpura along with sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Rajnish Arora paid tributes to the soldier on the behalf of Punjab government. The Indian Army gave a gun salute to the brave heart before his mortal remains were consigned to flames. Diyalpura said that Punjab government will provide financial assistance of Rs 1 crore to the family as announced by chief minister Bhagwant Mann. Pritpal Singh had joined the force in 2015 and his uncle (father's elder brother) had also retired from the Army. Divya Goyal is a Principal Correspondent with The Indian Express, based in Punjab. Will not part with fertile land: Protesting farmers
Ludhiana: After farmers and farmer union members in Jagraon area staged a protest against the state government's land pooling scheme, members of farmers' organisations and residents of Baliyon village, Samrala also staged a demonstration outside the office of the SDM, demanding rollback of the scheme. During the protest, led by Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU), Kadian, protesters raised slogans against the policy. Later, under the leadership of BKU Kadian district president Hardeep Singh Kadian, they handed over a memorandum to SDM, Samrala, Rajnish Arora. The protesters maintained that they would not give up their ancestral land and alleged that the state government and Glada (Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority) wanted to take their land for vested interests. Hardeep Singh said that farmers in the village were already facing losses and if their land was taken, they would be left with no means of livelihood. He said that if the scheme was not retracted, the agitation would be intensified. A protester, Shingara Singh, said that they would rather die than give up their land. He added that if the government needed land, it could proceed with acquisition in hilly terrain but they would not part with fertile land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like So sánh mức trượt giá: Hợp đồng tương lai (CFD) Bitcoin vs Ethereum IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo SDM Rajnish Arora said that he would inform Glada about the memorandum. Ludhiana: Attacked with sharp weapons, Samrala MLA's nephew critical
Amandeep Singh, nephew of Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Samrala MLA Jagtar Singh Dialpura, was brutally attacked near the fields of Bullepur village in Khanna on Friday morning. The 27-year-old was assaulted with sharp-edged weapons by unidentified masked assailants. Victim Amandeep Singh According to the police, Amandeep was heading to his fields near the Golden Grain Club when four men, travelling in an Alto K10 car, intercepted and attacked him with deadly weapons. Severely injured, he was initially rushed to a private hospital in Khanna and later referred to a private hospital in Mohali, where he remains in critical condition in the ICU. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Amritpal Singh Bhatti said Amandeep is a resident of Bullepur village and belongs to a farming family. 'The attackers had covered their faces and appeared to be waiting for him. They inflicted multiple injuries using swords and fled the scene,' said DSP Bhatti. The incident took place around 10 am. CCTV footage retrieved from the area showed the suspects' car moving suspiciously near the fields since early morning. Police sources said the attackers had been monitoring Amandeep's movements for the past two to three days, pointing towards a well-planned assault. Local residents who witnessed the aftermath of the incident immediately informed the police. A case has been registered. The area was cordoned off for evidence collection. The police are now examining the possibility of personal rivalry or a larger conspiracy behind the attack. Family members told the police that Amandeep's younger brother is serving in the Punjab Police. 'We suspect that this was not a spontaneous attack but a premeditated one. Someone with inside information may have helped the attackers,' said a family member. Police officials said efforts are on to identify and arrest the culprits. 'This appears to be a well-organised attack. We are analysing CCTV footage and questioning people who may have been in recent contact with the victim,' said DSP Bhatti.

Ludhiana: Agri dept intensifies vigil to stop sale of banned paddy hybrid seeds in markets
With the paddy sowing season underway, the agriculture department in Ludhiana has intensified efforts to ensure that banned hybrid seeds are not sold in the district's seed markets. The crackdown follows last year's controversy when a purported hybrid of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU)'s PR 126 was sold to farmers at inflated prices, leading to significant losses. Though originally priced at around ₹150 per kg, the seeds were allegedly sold for as high as ₹3,600 per kg. The hybrid was later blamed for high breakage percentages in rice grains, drawing concerns from millers and causing delays in crop procurement from mandis. 'This year, we've been proactively monitoring seed sales for over a month,' said district agriculture officer Gurdeep Singh. 'These hybrids were first banned, and we've since been conducting frequent inspections and directing dealers not to stock or sell them. Even the joint director of agriculture visited Jagraon and Samrala to supervise enforcement.' He confirmed that, so far no banned hybrid seeds have been recovered from the inspections. Any violations, he warned, would invite strict action under the Seed Act of 1983.. Meanwhile, as sale of hybrid seeds are curbed, the demand for genuine PAU-certified seeds has seen a boost. Last year, around 20,400 quintals of authentic seeds were sold. This year, sales have already reached 23,700 quintals, with over a week still remaining in the current sales window. Regarding the paddy transplant schedule, Singh said the state has been divided into three zones. 'Transplantation in Ludhiana—part of Zone 3—will begin from June 9, after areas with better groundwater levels begin on June 1 and 5, respectively,' he said.
