Trees replace waste pile at STP, NGT closes case

Noida: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has disposed of a case on waste dumping at Madhuban Bapudham STP after the Ghaziabad civic body confirmed the garbage was cleared within a year and replaced with plantations. About 61,000 metric tonnes of waste had been dumped in the open residential area of the society by GMC last year at the site in question, owing to the lack of road access to the processing site due to the Kanwar Yatra. Disturbed by the filth and stench, the society filed an application with NGT on Aug 17, 2024, seeking a direction to the corporation. The matter was disposed of by the tribunal on Aug 5 after being apprised of the remedial measures. The GMC, in its affidavit filed on July 26, stated, "Pursuant to the directions of this Tribunal and in discharge of our municipal responsibilities, the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam has fully cleared all solid waste from the site in question. As of today, no waste remains deposited at the site. After the clearance of the waste, the land has been restored and further developed by the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA). The GDA, in collaboration with Nature Monks Foundation, has undertaken and commenced Miyawaki Plantation on the said site to ensure ecological restoration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like List of Best Free Live TV Apps For Android 2023 - Best Software Categories Fragman-Best Softwares Search Now Undo " You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida | Gold Rates Today in Noida | Silver Rates Today in Noida Malak Bhatt and advocate Samridhi, counsels to the civic body, added that the land is under the jurisdiction of the GDA and is not owned by the GMC. "The corporation has not made any use of the land post-clearance of the waste," the counsel said, adding that "no further waste dumping will take place on the said land and that in future, alternate arrangements will be made in case of similar exigencies, in coordination with GDA and other concerned authorities. " The principal bench of the tribunal, comprising chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel, noted that both GMC and UPPCB filed their replies in response to the notices issued to them by the tribunal on Aug 27, 2024. The GMC commissioner in his Dec 3 response wrote, "Out of the said waste, 29,287 metric tonnes were already lifted and shifted to the Bhikanpur processing site, and the remaining balance of 31,713 metric tonnes is expected to be shifted and disposed of by Jan 2025." As the applicant expressed satisfactory redressal of his grievance, the tribunal decided to dispose of the original application 1090/2024 with a direction to the GMC to ensure that no further dumping of waste in the open is done. Amazon to invest ₹2,000 cr in India to expand logistics, boost safety

Amazon plans to invest more than ₹2,000 crore (about $233 million) in its Indian operations network in 2025, in a move aimed at strengthening logistics capabilities and boosting safety standards across the country. The investment will be directed towards expanding and modernising the e-commerce giant's infrastructure, enhancing employee safety and wellness initiatives, and developing advanced technologies to streamline its fulfilment network. The planned outlay highlights Amazon's broader ambition to operate what it calls India's 'safest, fastest, and most reliable' logistics network. The company said the new capital commitment builds on a series of prior investments that have enabled it to service every deliverable postal code in the country. 'For over a decade now in India, we have been focused on building the best-in-class logistics infrastructure—designed to deliver with safety, speed, scale, and reliability for our customers across the country,' said Abhinav Singh, Vice-President - Operations, Amazon India and Australia. 'These latest investments reflect our commitment to continually expand and upgrade our operations across our fulfilment, sortation and delivery network.' India remains a critical growth market for Amazon, which continues to face intense competition from rivals like Walmart-owned Flipkart, Reliance's JioMart and the Tata Group. Amazon plans to use the investment in India to launch new sites and upgrade existing facilities across its fulfilment, sortation, and delivery network. The move is aimed at boosting processing capacity, speeding up order fulfilment, and improving overall operational efficiency. The facilities—both new and existing—will feature energy-efficient systems and state-of-the-art technology. Amazon says its fulfilment centres are designed for accessibility, with ongoing improvements in cooling, safety measures, and rest areas to support employee well-being and create an inclusive work environment. The investment highlights Amazon's strategy to deepen its logistics footprint in India, enhance customer experience, empower sellers, and support local economic growth. Amazon will continue investing in initiatives to support the health and financial well-being of employees and associates across its India operations. Key programmes include Ashray, which offers rest points for delivery personnel; Samridhi, focused on financial education; Pratidhi, a scholarship programme for associates' children; and Sushruta, addressing truck drivers' healthcare needs. The company also provides on-site first aid and insurance cover for associates. It has launched a nationwide campaign to offer free health check-ups to over 80,000 delivery partners by the end of 2025. Amazon is also boosting on-road safety with tech-driven alerts for speed and rest, route optimisation tools, and a new Helmet Adherence App to ensure helmet use.
