RSS pitches for removal of terms socialist, secular from Preamble
New Delhi: A fresh controversy erupted on Friday after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale called for a review of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The remarks, made at an event in Delhi late Thursday night, drew support from Shiv Sena while Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) criticised it on Friday. Hosabale, speaking at the Ambedkar International Centre, made a strong pitch to consider whether the words socialist and secular, which were added to the Preamble by the Congress government during the Emergency, should remain. He further said: "The words 'socialist' and 'secular' were added to the Preamble during the Emergency. No attempt was made to remove them later. There should be a discussion on whether they should remain. I say this in a building named after Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose original Constitution did not include these terms in the Preamble." "The days of the Emergency also witnessed large-scale forced sterilisation," Hosabale added. Hosabale's remarks came after the BJP-led Central government on Wednesday observed June 25 as the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the imposition of the Emergency as one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history, saying the Congress not only violated the spirit of the Constitution but placed "democracy under arrest".

RJD chief accuses RSS of seeking Preamble changes
Patna: RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following its alleged call to remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble of the Constitution. In a strongly worded post, he accused the RSS of being the most casteist and hateful organisation in the country. Lalu's remarks followed a speech by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale at an event in Delhi on Thursday, where he suggested removing the two words from the Preamble, saying that they were inserted during the Emergency by the then Congress govt. Hosabale also demanded that Congress apologise for imposing the Emergency 50 years ago under the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Reacting to Lalu's criticism, BJP OBC Morcha national general secretary Nikhil Anand said, "Laluji has blunted the edge of social justice for the so-called secular politics of appeasement. The socialists have sacrificed the politics of social justice and diversity for the sake of Muslim appeasement. The proposal of RSS general secretary Hosabale to keep the original preamble of the Constitution intact is absolutely correct. It would be better if Laluji does not speak nonsense while sitting in the lap of Congress, the party which has insulted Baba Saheb." Recalling the Emergency, Hosabale said thousands were imprisoned, the media and judiciary were suppressed and mass forced sterilisations were carried out. "Those who did such acts are today moving around with a copy of the Constitution. They have still not apologised. Your ancestors did it. You must apologise for this to the country," he said, in a veiled reference to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, the grandson of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On Wednesday, the BJP-led NDA govt observed 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency's imposition.

Karnataka Home Minister defends FIR against BJP over post on Indira Gandhi, says 'some people will object'
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 26 (ANI): Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday defended the registration of an FIR against the Karnataka BJP for its controversial post on 'X' targeting former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying the action was taken in response to complaints. The FIR was registered after the BJP's post attempted to malign the image of Indira Gandhi, which triggered objections from Congress workers and supporters. Speaking to reporters, Parameshwara said, 'FIRs are registered based on certain complaints or suo moto if there are some things which generate animosity among people. In this case, if someone tries to malign the leader who served the country for many years and considers the positive development during that time, naturally, some people will object.' Karnataka BJP Chief BY Vijayendra defended the party's social media post, claiming that it was an apt description of the emergency imposed. Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra says, 'Yesterday was the completion of 50 years of the day when Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in the country. This issue has been discussed nationwide. What is wrong with the BJP's comparison of Indira Gandhi to Hitler? The world knows how the entire democracy collapsed to save her power... Senior leaders, Sangh parivar, everybody was put behind bars, and the media was suppressed... Probably DK Shivakumar must go back and learn what history has to say about the Emergency, about how democracy was suppressed.' Earlier on Wednesday, Congress leader and party's General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh alleged that for past eleven years, India has been under undeclared emergency, stating 'Over the past 11 years and 30 days, India democracy has been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as 'Undeclared Emergency@11'. These remarks come as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) observes the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. The Congress leader accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of multiple things, including attacking the Constitution, weakening the Parliament, eroding the autonomy of Constitutional bodies, damaging the judiciary, intimidating businesses, controlling the media, destroying federalism, misusing investigative agencies and cracking down on civil liberties. The Congress MP also slammed the BJP for controlling the media by putting pressure on news outlets and arresting, raiding journalists, adding that 'Owners are pressured to hire government-friendly journalists, and government advertising and permits are used as tools to control editorial content.' While on eroding centre-state relations, he accused the BJP of trying to topple Opposition-ruled states and trying to buy legislators. On 25 June 1975, then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. The Emergency was declared against a backdrop of mounting political unrest and judicial developments that shook the legitimacy of the ruling leadership. (ANI)
