Mamata slams Centre for observing June 25 as Constitution Murder Day, calls it mockery of democracy

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) criticised the BJP-led Union government's decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', calling it a mockery of democracy and the constitution. She also accused the saffron party of consistently attacking democratic institutions and undermining the very Constitution it now claims to uphold. Those who don't respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding its morality. It is a mockery.' The Centre had declared in 2024 that June 25 would be marked annually as 'Constitution Murder Day' to protest the imposition of Emergency in 1975, widely regarded as a dark phase in the history of Indian democracy. 'We can observe 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' every day, given the way the BJP is trying to change and undermine the Constitution,' said Ms. Banerjee, also the TMC supremo. Slamming the BJP over what she termed its undemocratic practices, Banerjee asked whether the "toppling" of democratically elected governments in Maharashtra and Bihar by the BJP was not an attack on the Constitution. Accusing the saffron party of weakening democratic checks and balances, she alleged that the BJP has ensured that all the pillars of democracy, be it the Election Commission or the media, are compromised. 'We don't want to hear lectures on democracy from those who are bulldozing democracy and the federal structure (of the country) every day,' Ms. Banerjee added. She also targeted the Centre over its alleged economic mismanagement through decisions such as 'demonetisation'. 'The manner in which they destroyed the country's economy in the name of demonetisation, November 8 should also be observed as 'Economy Destruction Day',' she said. In a dig at the central leadership, Banerjee questioned, 'Who is the Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? It looks like Amit Shah is running the country.'

'Nothing but hypocrisy': Mamata Banarjee slams BJP over ‘Constitution murder day'; says TMC won't take part in observance

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday criticised BJP-led government, slamming its decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day), calling it a 'mockery' and 'hypocrisy of the highest order'. 'Those who don't respect Constitution are talking about upholding its morality,' the Trinamool Congress chief said. announcing that the West Bengal government would not participate in the Centre's observance of the day. 'This is nothing but hypocrisy. Those who don't respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding its morality. It is a mockery," PTI quoted the TMC chief. Last year, the Centre had announced that June 25, the day Emergency was imposed in 1975, would be officially marked as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', commemorating what it describes as an attack on democracy during the Congress regime. Banerjee, however, argued that the BJP was guilty of doing exactly what it claims to oppose. 'The manner in which BJP is trying to change and undermine Constitution, we can observe 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' everyday,' she said. 'Was toppling of democratically elected govts by BJP in Maharashtra and Bihar not attack on constitution,' she further added. Banerjee also took a swipe at the central government's handling of the economy, pointing to the demonetisation exercise of 2016 as a turning point that hurt the country deeply. 'The manner in which they destroyed the country's economy in the name of demonetisation, November 8 should also be observed as 'Economy Destruction Day',' she said. Taking a sharp dig at the Centre, she questioned, 'Who is the prime minister of the country, Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? It looks like Amit Shah is running the country.' The further accused BJP of 'bulldozing democracy' by compromising key institutions such as the Election Commission and the media, and questioned the actual seat of power in the country.

Special Parliament session to mark 50 years of Emergency on June 25? ‘Diversion and distraction', says Congress

The Congress party on 29 May claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union governmnet was planning to call special session of Parliament on June 25 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. The party said it will be yet another classic exercise in "diversion and distraction" from real and more urgent issues by the Prime Minister. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said that from the night of April 22nd itself, the Congress party has been calling for an all-party meeting on the Pahalgam terror attack and its fallout to be chaired by the PM himself. That has yet to take place, he said. "On May 10th, both the LoP in the Lok Sabha and the LoP in the Rajya Sabha wrote to the PM requesting for a special session of Parliament to be convened and to demonstrate the nation's collective resolve through a resolution. The PM has NOT accepted that suggestion as well," Ramesh said in a post on X. Two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack, India on 7 May conducted precision strikes on at least nine terror camps in Pakistan in what is now known as 'Operation Sindoor'. India and Pakistan indulged in four days of military action post Operation Sindoor. The two nations agreed on an understanding to halt military action on 10 May. The US President has been repeatedly claiming that he helped settle the tensions between India and Pakistan. Since then US President Donald Trump has claimed to have mediated between the two countries in arrving at the ceasefire. The Congress has been asking PM Modi to break his "silence" on the Trump administration's repeated claims on how the India-Pakistan "ceasefire" was brought about. "Now it appears that a special session of Parliament is being considered for June 25-26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency," Ramesh claimed. Last year, Modi government decided to observe June 25, the day the Emergency was declared in 1975, as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to commemorate the 'massive contributions' of those who endured 'inhuman pains of the period', This will be yet another classic exercise in diversion and distraction from real and more urgent issues by the PM. "This will be yet another classic exercise in diversion and distraction from real and more urgent issues by the PM -“ the man who has placed the nation under an undeclared Emergency for 11 years and the man who refuses to answer why the Pahalgam terrorists are still absconding, why he allowed President Trump to broker a ceasefire, and why he gave a clean chit to China publicly on June 19th, 2020?" Ramesh asked.
