Cardi B Slams Critics Saying She Body-Shamed Fans: 'Don't Cry About It'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Cardi B has addressed backlash after being accused of making fatphobic comments during a livestream. The Up singer posted a video to the platform—which has since garnered 1.7 million likes and 10.7 million views—responding to criticism that began when she called her fans "fat f****" on a livestream after the largest size of merchandise quickly sold out. She said: "So this will be the last video that I make on this. The fact that I was making a joke between me and my fans. My fans was joking on Twitter how they sold out the 3x large shirts. And my fans were like, damn, us Bardi getting big. Damn, we could never make big jokes no more because we big." Plus-sized content creator Samyra posted several TikTok videos expressing surprise and disappointment over Cardi B's remarks. Newsweek reached out to Cardi B's publicists and Samyra via email. PascalSamyra said she felt the rapper's comments were fatphobic, particularly given that artists often fail to provide inclusive sizing in their merch. She added that 3XL is not technically considered plus-size, and said this lack of consideration extends to clothing collaborations as well. Samyra said that pairing limited sizing with fatphobic jokes sends the message that plus-size fans are undervalued. She also questioned why Cardi B—who has previously worked with the plus-size singer Lizzo—would make such remarks, and offered a list of books on fatphobia for the rapper to read. Samyra concluded by urging Cardi B to "unlearn fatphobia and stand up for them instead of standing against them." Cardi B initially responded by telling Samyra to "shut up," insisting the situation was "not that serious" and that her comments were a joke shared with her fans, not aimed at Samyra. Cardi B refused to apologize or read a book on the matter, saying she makes fun of everybody and that people should be able to laugh at themselves. She added that she would rather dedicate that time to learning more about other societal issues. Cardi B added that her fans were in on the joke and not offended, and accused Samyra of projecting her own insecurities onto the situation. Samyra later posted a written statement saying: "When I spoke about Cardi B's fatphobic comments, I did so respectfully, with the hope of encouraging her to think about the impact of her words on plus-size fans. Her choice to respond by telling me to 'shut the f*** up' and to 'calm my p*****' was vulgar, dismissive and escalated the issue entirely." Samyra added that, while she was used to "fatphobic harassment" online, the exchange had intensified it, prompting her to take a break from posting, to protect her peace. In another video, Cardi B said she felt she had been "attacked" on the app and that the controversy had turned TikTok into a negative space for her. She added that her original comments were an "open form joke" with her fans, not intended to hurt anyone's feelings, and accused Samyra of inserting herself into the joke and making multiple videos about it. The rapper refused to issue an apology, on the basis it would be "fake and forced." Cardi B said that she understood the existence of body shaming and dysmorphia, recalling her own insecurities over her "flat a**" when she was younger, but added that she had not intended to offend anyone. She expressed a wish for the topic to be "laid to rest" and said if people felt better making fun of her in return, they should. Sabrina Greer, founder of fEMPOWER Publications and a publicist for female entrepreneurs, told Newsweek: "Cardi B's 'fat f***s"' remark was, by her own admission, a joke. And, in isolation, maybe that's all it might have been. But it didn't land in isolation … did it? Rather, it landed, like a grenade, right smack dab into the middle of a culture shaped by decades of systemic body shaming." Greer said this long history creates hypervigilance and defensiveness, making even a joke feel like another wound. Noting that Cardi B herself has faced body-based criticism, Greer added that humor from someone with such influence can reinforce the idea that larger bodies are fair game. The incident has divided TikTok users, sparking conversations about cancel culture and the responsibilities of public figures. Nae wrote: "I just want to say, especially to people in the comments, 1. Samyra never disrespected Cardi but that wasn't reciprocated. 2. Clearly it's a 'big deal' bc [because] some people were offended. 3. Y'all keep saying Cardi's fans weren't offended but to my knowledge Samyra has never said that she wasn't a fan. If yall know that Samyra dedicates her platform to addressing fatphobia, clearly it wasn't an attack on Cardi bc of who she is. It's the principle." Others took a different view. "People are dying, Samyra," wrote Chelsea Porter, while a third user said: "It was genuinely never that serious ppl [people] at my school would get canceled everyday." And one commenter encouraged her to keep going: "Samyra please don't stop talking about this!" Do you have any viral videos or pictures that you want to share? We want to see the best ones! Cardi B Reacts To Criticism For Calling Fans Fat

Cardi B responded after she was called anti-fat for her odd reaction to her 3X merch selling out. In a livestream from earlier this month, which was recently reposted on Reddit, Cardi B talked about underestimating how much 3X merch she should have stocked for a recent fashion drop. She had earlier released three "box sets" for her upcoming album, Am I the Drama?, which came with their own specially designed T-shirt and a CD with a signed art card. As of writing, all three are sold out on Cardi B's website. "The box sets are completely sold out, especially because you fat fucks," she said on the live stream. "You guys are fat as fuck!" Cardi repeated. "No Chick-fil-A for ya'll. All the 3X sold out! Y'all, the 3X sold out in like 20 minutes!" Perhaps anticipating backlash, Cardi quickly added, "I can't even make fun of fat people no more." But then she justified her actions by pointing to the negative commentary she receives about her own body. Cardi argued, "Don't call me fat-phobic, y'all, because everybody make fun of my BBL. So I can body-shame people because y'all body-shame me." As you can imagine, the video went super viral, with many fans expressing shock, anger, and complete disbelief at Cardi's remarks. Writing on Reddit, one person said, "Fat shaming people that are supporting you is crazy work." Another agreed, "Yeah this is strange. There are steadfast fans of every size, so why would you call out a single group? " Another wondered, "Is this supposed to be funny?" One Reddit user expressed that "usually when she's unhinged it's funny but this ain't it. It's rude." "Rude as hell," commented another. "My younger sister wears 2X/3X and I would hate for her to see this from an artist she likes." Someone else said, "What a terrible business decision to be rude to the people who sell out your merch first." While this person absolutely could not believe Cardi's comments. "WOW," they wrote. "Money cannot buy class Cardi B." An eighth fan also pointed out, "jokes aside everyone wears their t-shirts oversized af now." "If I got y'all so upset, here. Here's a cupcake," Cardi continued, offering a cupcake to the camera. "I'm not gonna apologize, though, because y'all fucking sensitive and wanna cry about some dumb shit." The video wound up receiving a response from TikTok influencer Samyra, who criticized Cardi's comments in a video. Calling her out by name, Samyra said, "Just because someone else makes a joke doesn't mean you have to make it too." She also defended Cardi from body-shamers in the same breath, acknowledging that's not acceptable either. "No, they shouldn't be making fun of your BBL," Samyra stated. "But also no, you shouldn't be making fun of fat people." And once again, people were left cringing at Cardi's remarks. So far, Samyra hasn't responded to Cardi's comments — except to say that she was temporarily leaving TikTok and Instagram because of online "harassment" sparked from the posts. BuzzFeed has reached out to Cardi's reps for comment, but in the meantime, you can see the note here.

A woman from Glasgow has been found dead inside a London hotel room after her worried twin sister raised the alarm. Samorine Djene Touré, 26, was on holiday over the bank holiday weekend but concerns grew when her family couldn't get hold of her. Samorine, who worked for Scotrail, has been described as "completely healthy" before the tragedy. Her twin sister Samyra contacted the Paragraph Edmonton hotel in Kendal Gardens and urged the manager to check up on her sister on Sunday. ‌ When she called the hotel back for an update, paramedics tragically responded with devastating news that Samorine had passed away. ‌ The cause of her death remains unknown to the family at this stage. It's understood a post-mortem and police investigation is currently underway. Speaking to Glasgow Live, Samyra's partner James Aitken spoke of how the family broke down when they heard the shocking news. James, 32, said: "She (Samyra) completely broke down. Their step-dad and little brother arrived at the same time as me and they were absolutely distraught, screaming and wailing - we all were. It's still a massive shock to us and unbelievable. We are waiting to find out what has happened." Samyra and her step-dad have now gone to Paris to be with Samyra's little sister and their mum, who are staying there at the moment. But James explained Samyra intends to travel to London on May 8 to find out what is happening with the investigation into Samorine's death. ‌ The family would like to have her body repatriated to the Ivory Coast in West Africa, which is her home country. He said: "They would like her to be buried back in her home country, which is a common tradition. We can't really go forward organising this without knowing what's happening and how long they will keep her for. "Samyra should be coming back from Paris on Thursday [May 8] and will go to London to find out what's happening. We are just waiting for the police to get back to us and the post mortem to be completed." ‌ Samorine, who lived in the Yoker area, was a former pupil at Knightswood Secondary School. When she wasn't working at Glasgow Central station, she doted on her nieces and nephews. Paying tribute to his sister-in-law, a tearful James added: "The family were all really close and the twins did everything together. She loved life and was so happy. She was such a good aunty to the kids, she loved them. "For the past few months she was praying five times a day, learning Arabic and teaching my children too. She was really trying to be the best person she could. She loved to travel and had a beautiful dog who she loved too." James has created a GoFundMe page, to repatriate Samorine back to her home country in West Africa, which has raised over £5,000.
