Dirty bathrooms, evidence of insects, rodents: San Angelo weekly restaurant inspections
The San Angelo/Tom Green County Health Department regularly monitors restaurants and food establishments for compliance with state food safety requirements. Frequent inspections are essential in preventing the spread of foodborne illnesses through contamination and improper handling, storage and sanitation. Scores for retail food establishments, food stores, mobile food units and school and daycare establishments inspected the week of July 6-12 are listed below. The Standard-Times obtained the information through an open records request. Disclaimer: On any given day, an establishment may have fewer or more violations than noted in its most recent inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term conditions at the establishment. A few more recent, follow-up inspections may not be included here. Environmental Health Division inspectors fill out one page of these reports. Other Texas health divisions, such as in Taylor and Wichita counties, fill out multiple pages with details, providing more information the public can obtain about local establishments that handle food. Any issues, comments or corrections are verbalized to local restaurants, according to Sandra Villarreal, the San Angelo-based health services director. All food establishments are inspected in accordance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules as adopted by the city of San Angelo. Perfect scores Angelo Ale House, 1529 W. Ave. N Burger King, 102 N. San Angelo restaurant looking for new owners
The Old Central Firehouse Pizzeria & Taproom in San Angelo is looking for new owners. The pizzeria posted on its Facebook page Wednesday that the owners were listing their firehouse at 200 S. Magdalen St. for sale. "It is a tough decision for our family to make, but our prayer is that the next owners will have the same love and respect that we have for this building and will continue to serve San Angelo," the post stated. "We are still open for business and have no plans of closing down. Normal business hours will proceed." Owners Michele and Jody Babiash opened the pizzeria in 2019 and opened Lakehouse Pizzeria and Taproom at 7401 Knickerbocker Road on July 4. The lakehouse property will not be for sale, according to Facebook. The pizzeria is attached to a bed and breakfast, which is also on the market. Jody took to his personal Facebook stating the business will continue as normal until it is sold. "We are not selling because we have to," he said. "In fact, it's the opposite. For us, personally, it is the best time to sell. If we do not get a buyer, things will continue normally. We have worked extremely hard to create the best pizza and atmosphere San Angelo has experienced in a while." He said as far as operations, it is up to the new owner to decide if the pizzeria will continue. According to the real estate listing on ERA Newlin's website, the building is selling for $3.5 million. More: Will the July 4 flood affect renovations to the coliseum? San Angelo police arrest one in homicide, pursue additional suspects
San Angelo police arrested a 17-year-old and are looking to apprehend two more teens in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Joe Angel Martinez III this week, according to a media release Friday. Davon Lewis, 17, and a 16-year-old juvenile male are being sought for murder charges, according to a police media release. During a press conference Friday afternoon, police Chief Travis Griffith asked the two suspects still at large to turn themselves in. "I know this is a scary situation, but I ask that you not put your family and friends through any more trouble, and running away makes things worse," Griffith said. Police asked that anyone with information related to this incident contact San Angelo Crimestoppers at 325-658-HELP (4357). Crimestoppers pays rewards for anonymous tips that lead to arrests. Griffith said police believe Martinez's murder is narcotics related. Officers with the San Angelo Police Department have arrested Justin Ramirez, 17, for a murder charge in connection with the incident, the release on Friday stated. Ramirez was being held Friday in the Tom Green County Jail on a $150,000 bond, online jail records show. "All individuals in this incident have been identified," Friday's release stated. Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until convicted beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, officers with the police department were dispatched to the area of Roosevelt Street and Rio Concho Drive in reference to a motor vehicle accident, police stated in a previous media release. Officers located a male, later identified as Martinez, with a gunshot wound inside the vehicle. "The individual was later pronounced deceased at Shannon Medical Center," police stated in Thursday's media release. San Angelo lends a hand to those in need after flood
Businesses and individuals all over San Angelo are lending a hand to their neighbors after a historic flood swept through the city. From laundry services to providing meals to pumping millions of gallons of water from neighborhoods, people all over San Angelo are seeing what they can do to help flood victims after the July 4 natural disaster. Oil field business works around the clock for flood relief San Angeloan Connor David Horak, president of Bar H Oilfield Services, said he received multiple calls on the morning of July 5 asking if people could use his trucks to help with the water in their homes. "Our trucks were designed to put out water, so we changed some hoses and designed them to pick up water," he said. Horak said he knew about BW and Katey Church with Tactical Water Group out of Midland but had never met them. He said after one phone call and five hours later, their equipment was ready to start pumping flood water out of San Angelo. "We move pretty fast in the oilfield but not that fast," Horak said. He said they worked for 36 hours straight, starting at 3 a.m. July 7. Over seven days, they pumped around 26-28 millions gallons of water with the help of other businesses and the city. "To my best understanding, there is no standing water in any home within city limits," Horak said. "If there is, text me." If you need help with water in your home, text Horak at 325-812-2602. Sales for the good Several businesses also donated their sales to flood efforts including Tropical Smoothie Cafe. Josh Roberts, owner of the restaurants in San Angelo and Brownwood, donated 100% of July 18 sales from both locations. He said the money will be sent to San Angelo and Kerrville flood victims. "San Angelo has taken care of us over the years, so we wanted to give back to them," Roberts said. He said around $10,000 was made from both restaurants. Two sisters pitch in to help San Angelo flood victims Some individuals in San Angelo don't have businesses or funds to assist victims, but they still wanted to help. Sisters Andrea Carson and Kerri Williams have been washing clothes for flood victims out of their home for free. "We wanted to help, but we both have kids under 2, and it's hard to get out and help people in their homes," Carson said. "We also don't have financial things to give. We thought this was something we could do to help from our homes." They began washing, drying and folding clothes for victims a few days after the flood. "We had a ton of laundry in the beginning, I think because there's so much that was still soiled from being in the flood," she said. "It's going down overall, it's more about keeping up with what the families are wearing every day." The sisters are taking sign-ups through the end of July, and people can sign up for a spot online using a Google appointment link. Carson said there were some families who opted to drop off their clothes instead of having them picked up. "When that's literally all they have, I think it makes them more comfortable to know where to take the clothes," she said.
