Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 Text Size: Walter (centre) flanked by Andrew (left) and Tony. SANDAKAN: A high-level meeting between Sandakan Municipal Council President Walter Kinson and prominent businessman Tan Sri Andrew Liew has set the stage for ambitious economic transformation plans here. Andrew, who serves on the Sabah Economic Advisory Council and chairs the Andamy Group, hosted the municipal leader for discussions centred on positioning Sandakan as a regional economic hub. Advertisement The business leader outlined a comprehensive development vision that capitalises on Sandakan's strategic location as Sabah's eastern gateway. His proposals include deeper economic integration with Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside focus on emerging sectors like green energy, biotechnology and marine industries. 'Sandakan has tremendous potential to lead in high-value sectors that can attract new industries and create sustainable economic growth,' Andrew said during the meeting, which also included MPS member Datuk Tony Liew Ja Hou. The development strategy extends beyond Sandakan's boundaries, with plans designed to stimulate coordinated growth across neighbouring districts including Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid. Advertisement Tourism emerged as another key focus area, with discussions on creating a distinctive brand around eco-tourism, cultural heritage and island resort experiences. The approach aims to leverage Sandakan's historical significance, natural ecosystems and wildlife conservation assets. Infrastructure development features prominently in the blueprint, though Andrew pointed out the importance of preserving Sandakan's unique cultural and environmental values throughout the modernisation process. The meeting also addressed human capital development, with both leaders agreeing on the need for local talent cultivation and retention strategies to ensure economic benefits reach the community directly. Walter described the discussions as constructive and forward-thinking, noting the alignment between municipal priorities and private sector capabilities. Both parties characterised the current period as a critical opportunity window for Sandakan's transformation, emphasising the need for coordinated efforts between government, business and community stakeholders to maintain competitiveness in the regional landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Commemorating ‘Double Six' tragedy in Sandakan

Published on: Sunday, June 08, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 08, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Vivian, Walter and other leaders among those in attendance at the 'Double Six' memorial in Sandakan. SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), in collaboration with the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre, held a memorial ceremony, on Friday to commemorate the 'Double Six' tragedy at Taman Chong Tain Vun, Jalan Trig Hill. The event drew leaders and community representatives, including Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee, MPS President Walter Kenson, several State Assemblymen, agency officials, NGOs and family members of the late Datuk Chong Tain Vun. Advertisement Wreaths were laid, followed by a moment of silence to honour the lives lost in the air crash. Walter said the memorial was a joint initiative between MPS and Vivian Wong to remember one of Sabah's darkest days and in particular, to recognise the contributions of a prominent figure from this district who died in the crash. 'He was a respected lawyer and public servant. This ceremony is a step toward ensuring the tragedy and the people we lost, are never forgotten,' he said. He also expressed gratitude to all who attended, regardless of political affiliation, and noted the strong support from local organisations despite the short notice. Advertisement 'This marks the start of what we hope will become an annual remembrance at the district level,' Walter said. Vivian hoped the council would continue the initiative, saying it was important for younger generations to learn about the tragedy and its significance in the state's history. Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon said the memorial served not just to recall a national loss, but to honour the sacrifices of leaders who dedicated themselves to Sabah's development. Jetama Chairman Liau Fui Fui agreed, adding that the legacy and leadership of those who perished must continue to be honoured. The tragedy occurred on June 6, 1976, when a plane carrying several Sabah leaders crashed in Kg Sembulan after departing from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu. Among the victims were Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Chong Thien Vun and Assistant Minister Darius Binion. Also killed were pilot Captain Gandhi Nathan, Johari Stephens (eldest son of Tun Fuad), Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Wahid Peter Andau, Economic Planning Unit Director Dr Syed Hussein Wafa and Isak Atan, private secretary to Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
