Just an hour of rain exposes drainage mess

Lucknow: An hour of moderate rainfall was enough to bring the state capital to a standstill, exposing the city's poor drainage system yet again on Saturday evening. Several areas across Lucknow witnessed knee-deep waterlogging, leaving commuters stranded and traffic crawling for hours. In many places, vehicles broke down in the middle of waterlogged roads and pedestrians were seen wading through dirty water. Knee-deep water accumulated near Ram Manohar Lohia hospital (RMLIMS) in Gomtinagar due to waterlogging. The patients and their attendants waited for hours to step out of the premises as water had accumulated in front of the gate. The Gwari underpass in Gomtinagar was closed due to knee-deep water accumulation to prevent accidents. "We have to board a train from Charbagh, but we are unable to get out and take public transport to reach the railway station," said a patient's attendant, Vijay Kumar from Basti. Despite repeated claims of monsoon preparedness by municipal authorities, residents say the situation remains unchanged year after year. "It wasn't even a heavy downpour. Yet, roads were flooded within minutes," said Sandeep Verma, a resident of Gomtinagar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Traffic police also faced a tough time managing congestion at key intersections like Hazratganj, Polytechnic crossing and Nishatganj. With the forecast predicting more rain in the coming days, residents are worried that even brief spells could lead to a repeat of Saturday's scenes. Meanwhile, LMC deployed teams across wards to manage drainage using pumping sets. Areas with severe water accumulation saw extra resources mobilised to restore normalcy. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar has urged citizens to report waterlogging by calling the toll-free number 1533.
