Dozens of Festival Plays Worth Traveling to This Summer
In and Around New York Just off Manhattan, a full-to-bursting open-air season is already underway at Little Island (through Sept. 28), a park in the Hudson River that looks from afar as if it was built atop a giant's stash of stiletto heels. Highlights include Kate Tarker and Dan Schlosberg's 'The Counterfeit Opera: A Beggar's Opera for a Grifter's City' (through June 15); Sarah Gancher's bluegrass re-envisioning of 'Eugene Onegin,' directed by Rachel Chavkin (July 30-31); and 'The Tune Up,' a music-filled evening of new work by Suzan-Lori Parks (July 30-Aug. 3). And at the newly renovated Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Shakespeare in the Park makes a glittery return with Saheem Ali's production of 'Twelfth Night' (Aug. 7-Sept. 14), starring Lupita Nyong'o as Viola, Sandra Oh as Olivia, Peter Dinklage as Malvolio, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Maria and Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Andrew Aguecheek. Amid the hive of theater development that is Poughkeepsie in summertime, New York Stage and Film's dozen public performances at Marist College (July 11-Aug. 3) include new works by Donja R. Love, Carly Mensch, Hansol Jung, Kirsten Greenidge and John Patrick Shanley, while a reading of Drew Gasparini and Alex Brightman's musical 'It's Kind of a Funny Story' is part of the Powerhouse Theater season (June 20-July 27) at nearby Vassar College. In Garrison, under the tent at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, 'The Comedy of Errors' (June 6-Aug. 2) plays in rep with Thornton Wilder's 'The Matchmaker' (June 8-Aug. 3), followed by Dave Malloy's chamber musical 'Octet' (Aug. 11-Sept. 7). The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, about an hour north of Philadelphia, takes an expansive approach to the Bard. You can see 'Hamlet' (July 9-Aug. 3) and its Tom Stoppard spinoff, 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' (July 17-Aug. 2). Iambic pentameter not your jam? You can also catch the musical 'The Producers' (June 11-29) or the Lorraine Hansberry play 'A Raisin in the Sun' (June 25-July 13). Now that's range. Northeast Western Massachusetts is a travel destination for the Berkshires' hilly beauty and for the summer seasons of its established theaters, including Barrington Stage Company (June 3-Oct. 12), in downtown Pittsfield; Shakespeare & Company (June 19-Oct. 12), in bucolic Lenox; and Berkshire Theater Group (through Oct. 26), in both Pittsfield and Stockbridge. Keanu Reeves transforms into 'inept' guardian angel as he stars alongside Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer in Aziz Ansari's directorial debut Good Fortune
Keanu Reeves is set to transform into an 'inept' guardian angel in Aziz Ansari's directorial debut Good Fortune alongside Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer. The comedy follows Gabriel (Keanu), a well-meaning but inept angel who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Aziz) and a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth). And the first trailer for the highly anticipated comedy has now been released, giving fans a look into Keanu's angel portrayal. The John Wick star, 60, is an unconventional angel, doing his duties in a police detective-style jacket, a shirt and tie. He also sports a very small pair of wings on his back, which are made even smaller by the appearance of Sandra Oh's character Martha's set. Keke Palmer also stars. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. When the trailer opens, Gabriel is on a rooftop overlooking Los Angeles, speaking with another angel named Martha (Sandra Oh). 'Martha, is there any way I can have more meaningful duties?' Gabriel asks. 'I want to guide people; I want to change their lives,' Martha tells him: 'To save a lost soul, you have to find a lost soul.' But for Gabriel, this doesn't take long. He discovers one in Ansari's character, while standing one night atop a Los Angeles Denny's restaurant. Gabriel approaches the man, letting him know that he's an angel - one who's 'normally only in charge of saving people from texting and driving,' but is now looking for a more meaningful pastime. 'Wait,' Ansari says. 'You're telling me I have a budget guardian angel?' The film marks Ansari's feature directorial debut following his stint as the star and creator of Netflix's Master of None. Written, directed, produced, executive produced by and starring Aziz, Good Fortune is a reimagining of his previous attempt at a directorial debut, Being Mortal. He also sports a very small pair of wings on his back, which are made even smaller by the appearance of Sandra Oh's character Martha's set His directorial debut was initially slated for 2022 under the title Being Mortal but the film fell through at Searchlight Pictures after then-star Bill Murray was accused of sexually harassing a young female crew member. Bill reportedly paid a $100,000 settlement to the woman in 2022 at the conclusion of the investigation. In an interview with the New York Times in April, Murray admitted that the incident still haunts him to this day — even as he remained defiant about the investigation's outcome, which he said was not 'justice.' Before recounting his alleged behaviour, he prefaced it by saying, 'I dunno what prompted me to do it. It's something that I had done to someone else before, and I thought it was funny, and every time it happened, it was funny.' Murray explained that, with filming during the coronavirus pandemic when people were wearing masks, he gave the unnamed female crew member — who was also masked — a kiss. 'It wasn't like I touched her, but it was just, I gave her a kiss through a mask.' Seth and Keke were both attached to star in Being Mortal, which was based on Atul Gawande's 2014 book of the same name. In 2022, Keke told Variety that the film would need 'a major rewrite' to be completed without Bill, but that: 'If somebody could figure it out, it's Aziz.'

Keanu Reeves Plays an Angel in Funny Trailer for Aziz Ansari's Comedy GOOD FORTUNE with Seth Rogen — GeekTyrant
Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Good Fortune , which marks the directirial debut of Aziz Ansari, who also wrote and produced the movie. It looks pretty funny! Keanu Reeves stars in the film as an angel named Gabriel. He's a well-meaning but inept angel who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Ansari) and a wealthy venture capitalist, who's played by Seth Rogen. Sandra Oh and Keke Palmer also star. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake previously said in a statement: 'We have indeed found good fortune with this film. We love the script and believe strongly in Aziz as both a performer and a director. 'And when you add in Seth and Keanu – two incredible world-class talents — toplining alongside Aziz, this has the potential to be a very special film for us. We moved quickly to land this project once it was available.' I love that Reeves is jumping into a comedy again. We mostly see him in action films these days, so seeing him take on the role of a budget angel is a lot of fun! The movie hits theaters on October 17th, 2025.
