Chelsea crush Man United 3-0 at Wembley to seal historic domestic treble in coach Bompastor's debut season

LONDON, May 19 — Chelsea beat Manchester United 3-0 in the Women's FA Cup final at Wembley yesterday to complete an English domestic treble in French coach Sonia Bompastor's first season in charge. Sandy Baltimore scored twice, either side of setting up Catarina Macario for the west London side's second. France international Baltimore opened the scoring from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time before Macario headed in her free-kick to put the result beyond doubt in the 84th minute. Baltimore then wrapped up the scoring against United, last season's FA Cup winners, in the first minute of added-on time when she turned Lisa Naalsund before lashing the ball home from close range. 'Invincibles' Chelsea had already been crowned English champions, becoming the first team to remain unbeaten in a 22-game Women's Super League season as they won their sixth successive domestic league title after previously lifting the League Cup. 'To achieve a treble in England, it's difficult to find the right words to describe that,' Bompastor told the BBC. 'It means a lot. I always say I want to make sure in every club I am manager that we have good values, the right values, and I want my players to really enjoy it. We worked hard all through the season. It was not easy and to achieve that, it will be part of history.' Chelsea's Erin Cuthbert, the player of the match, said of Sunday's success: 'It tops off a brilliant season. I'm so proud of the group. 'A lot of hard work's gone into this. To win in the fashion we did, we were holding on a bit at 1-0 but the second goal puts the game to bed.' Reflecting on how the side had adapted to Bompastor's methods, she added: 'There's a lot of change but you just have to embrace it. 'She's a manager, she's a winner, as management and as a player, so you've got to respect that. She's done a brilliant job since she's come in. And a treble, what a way to start it!' Bompastor took over at Chelsea after long-serving and successful manager Emma Hayes left to become the United States' national women's team manager. But their hopes of a quadruple were scuppered when they lost 8-2 on aggregate to Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League — a tournament they've yet to win for all their domestic triumphs. At Wembley, in a crowd of over 74,000 featuring new Chelsea women's team investor Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian — as well his tennis champion wife Serena Williams — the Blues dominated the first half but were kept waiting for an opening goal. It looked as if United would go into the break with the game still goalless but poor defending from Celin Bizet saw her step into Cuthbert and bring the Scotland midfielder down, with referee Stacey Fullicks wasting no time in awarding a penalty. Baltimore, despite the massed ranks of United fans behind the goal trying to distract her and some mind games from Phallon Tullis-Joyce, coolly sent the United goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot. An improved United had their chances to equalise early in the second half and even the introduction of England star Ella Toone off the bench could not bring the Cup-holders a goal. And any hopes of a United fight back were dashed by Macario and Baltimore's late goals. — AFP

Chelsea complete domestic treble with FA Cup win as Sam Kerr misses celebrations

Chelsea completed the treble of domestic trophies on Sunday, crushing holders Manchester United 3-0 in the women's FA Cup final, with Sandy Baltimore getting two goals and an assist at Wembley. Sam Kerr, who has not played a single match for the Blues this season as she recovers from her long-term ACL injury, was not around for the celebrations. The Matildas star was a surprise attendee at the A-League Women grand final in Melbourne, instead. Tennis great Serena Williams, whose husband, Alexis Ohanian, has bought a stake in the team, was in the stands as Chelsea added the FA Cup to their Women's Super League and League Cup victories in what has been a remarkable unbeaten domestic season. "Chelsea is very unique. These are the queens of global soccer and they've got the trophy case to prove it," Ohanian told the BBC in an interview. "This will be a billion-dollar franchise one day, and I hope my dollars, my pounds, can go towards that and especially back home in America, this is going to be America's team." Chelsea, who had already won the Women's Super League and League Cup, had a nervy start in front of 74,412 fans, but by half-time were fully in control. "To achieve a treble in England, it's difficult to find the right words to describe that," coach Sonia Bompastor told the BBC. "I want my players to really enjoy it. We worked hard all through the season. It was not easy and to achieve that, it will be part of history." Bompastor took over the side this season from Emma Hayes, who was a hard act to follow after 12 years in charge and whose team also won the treble in the 2020/21 season. United had an early flurry, exerting pressure in the first 15 minutes on Sunday and winning a series of corners. But the London side grew into the game, and when winger Baltimore beat goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce with a penalty just before half-time, they looked full of confidence. Norway midfielder Celin Bizet conceded the spot kick with a clumsy foul that floored Erin Cuthbert near the edge of the area. Baltimore turned provider in the second half, whipping in a free kick for substitute Catarina Macario to head home in the 84th minute. "It's a very emotional day," tearful American Macario told the BBC as teammates celebrated around her on the pitch. "It's a trophy we always wanted to win. We wanted to win a treble … it's a special day to be at Wembley and to win means a lot." Baltimore lashed home the third to settle the game in front of an ecstatic Chelsea end in the first minute of stoppage time. Tullis-Joyce had kept United in the match with two fine first-half saves from Aggie Beever-Jones and bravely dropped to retrieve the ball from the feet of Lucy Bronze. But United barely tested Hannah Hampton at the other end of the pitch. AAP/Reuters

Chelsea defeat Man Utd to win Women's FA Cup and complete treble

A Sandy Baltimore inspired-Chelsea beat Manchester United 3-0 at Wembley to both win the Women's FA Cup and complete a second domestic treble in five Baltimore (pen) 45', 90+1', Macario 84' The Blues were dominant throughout but came up against a resilient United side, who were looking to retain their trophy and stun the WSL champions in the competition for a second season in a row. They found the breakthrough right on the stroke of half-time, but with some help from United. Celine Bizet, who had starred in the semi-final win over Manchester City, made a rash challenge on Erin Cuthbert, and gave the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Despite the best efforts of Phallon Tullis-Joyce and the fans behind the goal, Sandy Baltimore made no mistake, sending the United goalkeeper the wrong way with a very cool penalty. Baltimore then rounded off a dream day for her with a second, and Chelsea's third in added time, turning Lisa Naalsund before firing home. It put the seal on a brilliant first season for the French international, and her compatriot, Blues boss Sonia Bompastor, who has equalled Emma Hayes' best campaign on her first go. 📸 JUSTIN TALLIS - AFP or licensors

Chelsea beat Manchester United in FA Cup final to seal domestic treble

Sandy Baltimore's brace inspired Chelsea to a 3-0 FA Cup final triumph over Manchester United and sealed an unbeaten domestic treble for Sonia Bompastor's serial winners in front of a sell-out crowd at Wembley. Bompastor had already led the Blues to league cup glory and a sixth successive Women's Super League title in her first season in charge at Chelsea, who became the first side to go through a 22-match WSL campaign without a loss. Advertisement Baltimore opened the scoring with a penalty on the stroke of half-time then provided the assist for Catarina Macario to make it 2-0 when she nodded home with six minutes remaining in the second half. France international Baltimore denied holders United any chance of a comeback when she lashed home at the start of 10 minutes added time to cap off the triumph. England boss Sarina Wiegman was watching on at Wembley, where Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, who four days ago announced he had purchased a minority stake in Chelsea's women's side, took in the win alongside wife and 23-time tennis grand slam singles winner Serena Williams. The contest got off to a cagey start, United with the slight advantage after winning a few set-pieces and forcing Hannah Hampton – battling Mary Earps to be England's first-choice keeper at July's Euros – to palm away Grace Clinton's corner. Advertisement Aggie Beever-Jones, who has enjoyed a splendid season with the WSL champions, was able to beat Millie Turner's challenge, but it did take the sting out of her effort, which was comfortably saved by Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Sandy Baltimore (left) struck twice for Chelsea (Jonathan Brady/PA) Chelsea then dealt with a cross at the other end of the pitch, but it was only cleared as far as the unmarked Dominique Janssen, who missed a big chance to hand United the lead when she fired just over the crossbar. Mayra Ramirez made easy work of the United defence, skipping freely around a collection of red shirts and forcing Tullis-Joyce to react quickly before Lucy Bronze could take advantage and prod home. The American keeper denied Beever-Jones again, this time diving to stop an effort that curled dangerously close to her right post. Advertisement But the Blues soon took the lead after Erin Cuthbert was brought down by Celin Bizet, who caught the Scotland international with a boot to the midriff. Baltimore picked out the bottom left with her spot-kick, and Tullis-Joyce dove the wrong way. United substitute Ella Toone, who came on for Turner after the restart, got herself involved quickly, stinging Hampton's palms. Bompastor made her first change shortly after the hour, replacing Ramirez with Macario, and United narrowly escaped conceding a second when Gabby George nearly turned a cross into her own net. Advertisement VAR silenced United's protests for a penalty, arguing Hampton had unjustly impeded Elisabeth Terland, before Beever-Jones missed a golden chance to double the Blues' advantage, skying an effort after she was teed up by Macario's backheel. United States international Macario then added her own name to the scoresheet, rising highest amongst a sea of red shirts to meet Baltimore's free-kick and powering her header past Tullis-Joyce. But the Blues were not finished scoring, and Baltimore bagged her brace, lashing home moments after 10 minutes of added time were announced.
