Yeoh seeks bankruptcy order against UUM lecturer over unpaid court award
On May 30, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered Kamarul Zaman Yusoff to pay Hannah Yeoh RM400,000 in damages and RM80,000 in legal costs for defaming her in two Facebook posts published in 2017. PETALING JAYA : Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has initiated bankruptcy proceedings against Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusoff after he failed to pay more than RM400,000 in damages and costs awarded for defaming her. Yeoh's lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, told FMT that Kamarul had not paid the damages and costs despite the High Court's decision in May. 'So, we have commenced bankruptcy proceedings against him. 'As we were unable to serve the notice papers on him, we obtained an order to serve them via substituted service, which includes an advertisement in a newspaper,' she said. The notice of Yeoh's bankruptcy petition against Kamarul, dated July 9, was published in Utusan Malaysia today. A copy must also be affixed on the notice board at the Kuala Lumpur High Court and sent by registered post to Kamarul's address as stated in his MyKad. On May 30, the High Court ordered Kamarul to pay Yeoh RM400,000 in damages and RM80,000 in legal costs for defaming her in two Facebook posts published in 2017. On the same day, Kamarul said he would appeal against the High Court decision to challenge both the factual findings and legal basis of the ruling. Sangeet confirmed that Kamarul had filed his appeal against the court ruling in June, but had delayed in applying for a stay of execution of the judgment sum. 'Despite many demands for the judgment sum to be paid in accordance with the court order, he has refused. 'Since there is no order for a stay, the plaintiff is entitled to enforce a valid court judgment. The decision was given on May 30, and the defendant only filed his application for a stay in July,' she said. She also said the hearing of his application for the stay is scheduled for Aug 28. Yeoh, the youth and sports minister, filed the lawsuit in 2022 over Kamarul's Facebook posts. One was an article titled 'Hannah Yeoh contoh hipokrasi terbesar DAP di Malaysia' (Hannah Yeoh, the biggest example of DAP hypocrisy in Malaysia), and the other was a police report that he lodged against her and later shared online. Yeoh claimed that Kamarul, in both documents, accused her of 'proselytising Christianity through her politics', promoting a 'Christian agenda', and intending to 'convert Malaysia into a Christian country'. She asserted that the statements were offensive, untrue, and a malicious attempt to damage her reputation.

Melaka man gets 33 years in prison for 2018 murder of car rental customer
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The High Court today sentenced a former car rental operator to 33 years in prison for murdering a woman who had rented a vehicle from him seven years ago. Judge Datuk Anselm Charles Fernandis found Shamshuri Mohamad, 55, guilty of murdering the 40-year-old woman at a house in Taman Bertam Perdana, Melaka, between 10am and 1pm on June 4, 2018, the New Straits Times reported. The judge ruled that the defence had failed to prove Shamshuri's innocence and ordered the sentence to be calculated from the date of his arrest. He said he had considered submissions by the defence, aggravating factors presented by the prosecution, and a victim impact statement from the victim's husband, who is now raising their two children alone. The judge also noted that Shamshuri was exempted from caning as he was over 50 years old. Shamshuri was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, with a mandatory 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death. His lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, had asked for a minimum custodial sentence without whipping due to his client's chronic health conditions and the fact that he had voluntarily surrendered to police on the day of the incident. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Firdaus Saleh pushed for the death penalty, citing the violent nature of the crime and its long-lasting impact, and noted that the trial began in September 2020 with testimony from 21 prosecution witnesses and one defence witness, the accused himself.

Pamela's case still active, statements taken from 48 witnesses, say cops
Pamela Ling was reported missing on April 9 while on her way to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya. PETALING JAYA : Investigations into the disappearance of Pamela Ling remain ongoing, with police recording statements from 48 individuals so far. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said identifying the suspects believed to be behind her abduction had been challenging, as the vehicle used was fitted with a fake registration plate and had a mismatched chassis number. 'We've already taken a statement from the actual owner of the car, and he is not the suspect,' he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro after an event at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters. He added that the facial composite of the suspects was only about 40% accurate. Police are currently gathering evidence from the crime scene and pursuing various leads, including through reviews of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. Ling, 42, was reported missing on April 9 while on her way to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya in an e-hailing vehicle. A police report was lodged at 3.02pm the same day. Last month, lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said one of the vehicles seen in CCTV footage of Ling's alleged abduction was spotted near the Thai border. However, she said there had been no updates provided by the police regarding forensic testing of the items found in the car. Police previously revealed that five vehicles were involved in the incident, three of which had used cloned number plates. About eight suspects are believed to have been involved in the alleged kidnapping, two of whom were seen in CCTV footage wearing police vests. On May 15, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said that Ling's husband, Sarawakian businessman Hah Tiing Siu, had been arrested to assist in an investigation, but did not disclose the nature of the probe. MACC chief Azam Baki previously said that Ling was a witness in a money laundering investigation.

Car linked to Pamela's disappearance found near Thai border, says lawyer
Published on: Monday, June 16, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 16, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said her client's family was last informed that Interpol had yet to be alerted. PETALING JAYA: One of the vehicles seen in CCTV footage of Pamela Ling's alleged abduction was recently spotted near the Thai border, according to her lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo. In a statement, Sangeet said that several weeks ago, the family was informed that one of the cars seen in the footage was found abandoned near the Thai border. Advertisement 'Weeks later, no updates have been provided regarding forensic testing of the items found in the car. 'Given the obvious possibility that she was taken across the border, the family was last informed (a few weeks ago) that Interpol had not yet been alerted – what are the police waiting for?' she said. Sangeet also said that Ling's family was informed by the police that they had been 'able to find nothing' when asked about the investigation into Ling's disappearance. 'After purportedly taking statements from 47 people, the police have no leads,' she said, questioning the competence of the force in probing her client's case. On Saturday, lawyer N Sivanathan, also representing Ling, urged the authorities to release the CCTV recording, saying the investigation 'seems to have reached a dead end'. He also called for the images of her alleged assailants to be released. Ling, 42, was reported missing on April 9 while on her way to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's headquarters in Putrajaya. On May 8, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said they had CCTV footage of her alleged abduction. Rusdi also revealed that five vehicles were involved in the incident, three of which had used cloned number plates. About eight suspects are believed to have been involved in the alleged kidnapping, with CCTV footage showing that two of them were wearing police vests. On May 15, Rusdi said that Ling's husband, Sarawakian businessman Hah Tiing Siu, had been arrested to assist in an investigation, but did not disclose the nature of the probe. MACC chief Azam Baki previously said that Ling was a witness in a money laundering investigation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
