During the meeting, students seeking financial support were assessed for eligibility under available government aid and scholarships. Councillor alleges corruption in Tirunelveli corporation, demands removal of commissioner

TIRUNELVELI: Tirunelveli Corporation council meeting on Thursday turned chaotic after MDMK councillor J Sangeetha staged a walkout, demanding the removal of Commissioner Dr N O Sukhaputra, blaming the latter for allegedly enabling corruption. During the meeting, chaired by Mayor G Ramakrishnan in the presence of Deputy Mayor K R Raju and the commissioner, Sangeetha alleged that a few temporary employees, with no official links to the corporation, have been executing office-related works, including computer operations. "All corporation works are routed only through these individuals, resulting in rampant corruption. When I questioned this, the commissioner began targeting me with retaliatory actions," she said, before walking out of the session, demanding his removal. The situation escalated after several DMK councillors, including M Sudha of Ward 29, also criticised the administration, claiming that no developmental works have taken place in their wards since the mayor assumed office. "Last month, Rs 10 lakh was announced as special funds for each ward, but the resolution is being passed only now. By the time the works begin, the Assembly elections will be announced," said Sudha. Many ruling party councillors joined in voicing their frustration over delays and a lack of transparency. M Revathi, zonal head of Thachanallur, alleged that her zone was ignored in the allotment of the newly procured three backhoe loaders. The deputy mayor, Raju, responded that he was unaware of the purchase of the machines. "Neither the mayor nor the commissioner shares any information with me," he said. Refuting all the allegations, the commissioner told the council that a complaint against Sangeetha was already under investigation. He also alleged that he had received offensive text messages from her phone. "Those messages are also a part of the ongoing inquiry," he said. Several officials stood up in protest, defending the commissioner. Mayor Ramakrishnan said that councillors must not bring unrelated matters into the meeting and warned them of stern action. Statue for historian As part of the meeting, several resolutions were passed, including one to instal a life-size statue of historian Tho Paramasivan near the District Central Library and another to increase the deposit fee for underground drainage connections. While the meeting was in progress, social activist R Siraj staged a sit-in protest with polluted Thamirabarani river water, alleging that sewage had been mixed into the drinking water supplied to the residents.

Thoothukudi SP denies woman's charge of bias in sexual harassment probe

THOOTHUKUDI: Thoothukudi police have rebutted allegations made by a 24-year-old woman that Rural DSP Sudhir had foisted a SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act case on her at the behest of a history sheeter. The woman petitioner L Sangeetha of Ganga Parameswari Colony recently told media that Thoothukudi Rural DSP Sudhir had foisted a case on her on the complaint given by a history sheeter, against whom she had complained on many occasions, including a misbehaviour at a park in December 2024, and attempt to stab her in January, 2025, and she had lost trust of the investigation by police. On Sunday, Superintendent of Police Albert John issued a statement denying her allegations. He stated that an FIR was registered against Thenmalai Thenkumaran for the misbehaviour on December 26, 2024 and he was remanded. Based on her second complaint, he was booked for threatening her on February 11. Further, he said inspector Ramalakshmi, the investigation officer of the case, had held inquiries with her at home and not at workplace, as requested by the woman. Regarding Sangeetha's allegation of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act case, the SP said that it was registered after preliminary inquiry. According to police sources, five FIRs have been registered against Thenmalai Thenkumaran, acting on Sangeetha's complaint given between April 2024 to February 2025, and one PCR case on Sangeetha based on Thenkumaran's complaint on April 13, 2025. Pudukottai AWPS inspector did not want to handle the case and it was handed over to Thoothukudi All women police station inspector Ramalakshmi. Prior to that, SIPCOT inspector Cyrus also relieved himself from handling the case allegedly due to complaints lodged by both individuals. Meanwhile, DSP Sudhir has recused himself from probing the PCR case, since the complainant Sangeetha has expressed distrust over him. Speaking to TNIE , SP Albert John said steps are being taken to appoint a new IO for the case. Also, he said the department is considering transferring the case to CB CID.

Farmers reiterate bribe collection at DPCs; collector says show proof

1 2 3 Madurai: The oft-heard complaint from farmers that they are made to shell out bribes at direct procurement centres (DPCs) to process harvested paddy raged at the monthly farmers' grievance redressal meeting presided over by Madurai collector M S Sangeetha on Friday. The farmers said while the govt has mandated only Rs10 per bag as handling charges of paddy, the authorities were collecting between Rs40 and Rs80 a bag. A section of farmers accused the officials of being in cahoots with local politicians in the corruption at DPCs. Agitated farmers even claimed that their leaders who sat in the front were playing second fiddle to officials and the govt, much to the discomfiture of the leaders. Police had to subsequently intervene to calm a wordy duel that erupted among them. Responding to the complaints, the collector said farmers should stop paying bribe at DPCs and come to authorities with specific complaints. Agitated farmers however said the district administration was shaming them by twisting facts, but the collector vehemently opposed their accusations. "We need proof to punish a crime which the farmers don't provide," she told the meeting. To this, the farmers said those raising complaints were targeted by local politicians and there was no safety for their lives. Sangeetha promised that their genuine complaints would be taken seriously, and urged them to stop giving bribes at DPCs. Meanwhile, even as the horticulture department distributed pamphlets about pest management in coconut, farmers from Kottampatti and Sholavanthan complained that almost 50% of their crop has been affected by whiteflies. They demanded a survey of the damage and compensation for the wilted trees. They sought spraying of pesticides using drones as local methods were not helping. The collector ordered a survey of the damage and initiated integrated pest control measures to save the crop.

‘Walk of Hope': Autism awareness walkathon in Mysuru

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, the Devdan Foundation Learning Centre, in association with PADHA Trust, has organised 'Let's Accept Autism – Walk of Hope: Autism Acceptance Walkathon' on Sunday in Mysuru. The 3-km long walkathon will commence at 6.30 a.m. from the North Gate of Mysore Palace (Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple premises) and culminate at the University of Mysore Athletic Ground (Oval Ground). In India, for every 48 children, one child is diagnosed with autism, and therefore awareness is crucial, the organisers said. Kotera Devaiah, director, Devdan Foundation Learning Center, told a press conference here on Wednesday: 'This isn't just a walk. It's a movement. We walk for the children still waiting to be understood. We walk for the parents seeking help, support, and hope. We walk to challenge stigma, break the silence, and celebrate the strength and uniqueness of every autistic individual.' The foundation, in a release here, said it invites leaders of institutions, professionals, corporates, entrepreneurs, bankers, industrialists, students, and citizens to join the walk and extend their support to the campaign. Dhanya Ponnamma Ballachanda, chairperson, Devdan Foundation Learning Centre said the Autism Awareness Walkathon has been organised to raise awareness about Autism, promote early diagnosis and support. 'Don't wait; don't watch from the side-lines. Your presence matters. Your voice is needed. Your support can light the way to a more inclusive future. Walk with us,' she appealed. Sangeetha, secretary, PADHA Trust said, 'Twenty years back, for every 10,000 children, one child was diagnosed with autism, but now, for every 48 children, one child is diagnosed with Autism. Hence, awareness on autism is very important.' For participants, the dress code is blue. For details, contact Devaiah 9900281275 and Sangeetha 8904003900.
