Comelec warns vs. 'fake news' of voter registration fee

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued an advisory against a social media post circulating online which falsely states that money will be charged to those who seek to register as voters. In a "fake news alert" on Friday evening, the poll body denied that it now charges a P3,000-fee for each voter registration, as claimed by a bogus social media announcement. "Ang Facebook post na kumakalat ukol sa pagbabayad ng halagang 3,000 PHP para makapagparehistro bilang botante ay HINDI TOTOO at HINDI GALING sa tanggapan ng Commission on Elections," the poll body said. (The Facebook post spreading online about paying P3,000 to be able to register as a voter is not true and is not from the office of the Commission on Elections.) The Comelec added that the same misleading content was not posted in its official and verified social media channels on any platform. A total of 2.8 million Filipinos registered for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) during Comelec's 10-day voter registration drive. It kicked off on August 1, or nearly two weeks before President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. signed into law Republic Act (RA) 12232, which postponed the polls from October 2025 to November 2026. The new law sets the term of office of all elected barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials to four years. Comelec Chairman George Garcia had said voter registration for the BSKE would resume in October this year. Also in its advisory, the Comelec insisted that it would never charge any fees to register as voters in any election. "Ang pagpaparehistro bilang botante ay isang karapatang ginarantiya ng ating Konstitusyon sa mga kwalipikadong Pilipino at walang anumang klase ng bayad ang kailangan para rito," the Comelec said. (Registration as a voter is a constitutionally guaranteed right for qualified Filipinos. No fees whatsoever are required for this.) The poll body warned the public to refrain from clicking on suspicious links, and sharing these to others online. The public was advised to seek information on Comelec's official website ( and its social media accounts. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Comelec to resume voter registration in October after BSKE polls postponed

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday said it will resume voter registration in October following the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election (BSKE). 'Kung sakali po talaga na hindi na matutuloy ang election sa December 1, kami po ay magre-resume sa October na ito ng taon ng 2025 hanggang next year ng July ng atin pong registration,' Comelec chairperson George Garcia told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview. (If the elections cannot proceed on December 1, we will resume our registration from October this year, 2025, until next year in July.) Comelec on August 1 launched a ten-day voter registration for 2025 BSKE, in which 2.8 million people have registered. President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday signed into law the measure seeking to postpone the BSKE from December 2025 to November 2026. According to Garcia, the movement of the BSKE schedule is in light of the newly set fixed term of four years for barangay and SK officials. The Comelec official noted that the adjustment on BSKE will be effective after 15 days of publication in newspapers or the Official Gazette but can be challenged before the Supreme Court. 'Alam po natin na kahit ito ay nalagdaan na ng ating Pangulo, ang batas po ay magiging epektibo lamang kapag ito ay na-publish sa newspapers of general circulation o Official Gazette,' he said. (We know that even though it has been signed by our President, the law will only become effective when it is published in newspapers of general circulation or the Official Gazette.) 'At pagkatapos, wala pong makakapigil sa sino man na gustong pumunta sa Korte Suprema upang kuwestiyonin ang legalidad nito,' he added. (And then, nothing can stop anyone who wants to go to the Supreme Court to question its legality.) —Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA Integrated News

Comelec holds special voter registration for 2025 BSKE for PDLs

Commission on Elections chairman George Erwin Garcia talks with the persons deprived of liberty during the special voter registration at the Manila City Jail in Sta. Cruz, Manila on Monday, August 4, 2025. A total of 73 female and 186 male PDLs registered during the event. DANNY PATA/GMA Integrated News The Commission on Elections (Comelec) conducted Monday a special voter registration for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Manila City Jail for the 2025 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE). Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia personally visited the satellite voter registration site, where 137 female PDLs and 186 male PDLs were expected to register for the first batch of registrants. 'Dapat talaga residente sila hanggat maaari ng lugar kung san sila boboto para makapag-avail sila ng tinatawag na PDL voting,' said Garcia. (It should be that they residents of the areas where they will vote to avail of the PDL voting.) 'Pero…pwede naman namin ilipat yung registration kung saan talaga sila later on boboto. Ang importante maparehistro,' he said. (However, we can transfer their registration in areas where they will vote. What's important is we have them registered.) According to Garcia, PDLs are entitled to vote 'until there is no final judgement of conviction.' The poll body also said the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) recorded an 88% voter turnout for PDLs in the recent May 12 elections. 'Ibig sabihin, ganun kataas ang interest ng mga kababayan natin bagamat sila ay di malaya. Ibig sabihin, nagnanais sila na pag lumaya na sila, o kahit di pa nakakalaya, magandang buhay at lipunan para sa kanilang minamahal sa buhay,' Garcia added. (This means they have a high interest in the elections despite their detainment. They also want a better life and society for their families even if they have yet to be free.) The poll body started the ten-day nationwide voter registration for the 2025 BSKE on Friday, August 1. It is slated to run until August 10. However, voter registration in Special Registration Anywhere Program (SRAP) sites will last until August 7. The Comelec set up RAP booths in various areas in Metro Manila including malls, hospitals, and airports. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
