Welsh Government to delay Border Control Post at Holyhead
The BCP, at Parc Cybi, was built to ensure Holyhead, a major ferry port, could continue operating under post-Brexit import rules.
While physical and identity checks on EU imports started on April 30, 2024, no start date for sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) checks on imports from Ireland has been announced.
A statement from Huw Irranca-Davies, MS, said the government is not proceeding with the final commissioning or staffing of the Holyhead BCP.
This decision will be reviewed once the final details of a 'Common Sanitary and Phytosanitary Area' with the EU are known.
The government will also not move forward with BCPs at Fishguard and Pembroke Dock.
The Holyhead site will remain ready as a potential BCP facility, with the government promising to give traders and partners notice if new border checks are needed.
