Yorkshire chief says Hundred cash can give county a ‘once in a lifetime' chance

Yorkshire's chief executive Sanjay Patel believes the club's cash windfall from the Hundred represents a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' to end years of financial turmoil at Headingley. The White Rose have sold their entire 51 per cent share in Northern Superchargers to the Sun Group, owners of Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, becoming the only one of the eight host counties not to retain a stake. With around £40million coming in as part of that deal, as well as another payment in region of £18m from the England and Wales Cricket Board's central sales pot, Yorkshire are finally in a position to eradicate the onerous £25m debt that has hamstrung the club for a generation. The Hundred may not be universally popular in Yorkshire, a hotbed of cricket tradition, but Patel is clear that the influx of money has helped avert the prospect of oblivion. 'Without this money coming in we were going into administration,' he told the PA news agency. 'Financially, it wasn't sustainable and there's no way of trading your way out of that. We were borrowing money to stay alive and there's only so long you can do that. 'Thankfully this cheque has come along, allowed us to clear our debts, and make sure this club never gets itself into this financial position again. It's amazing news, a once in a lifetime opportunity. 'We can look forward now to doing things that haven't been achievable in the past because of the finances: it's a platform to think about the stadium, the facilities and how we grow cricket in Yorkshire for the next five to 10 years.' Patel is relaxed about being an outlier in selling lock, stock and barrel to outside investors, insisting it remains more of a relationship than a takeover. 'I'd like to think it will still be a partnership, they have a massive affinity to Headingley and are very respectful to the heritage and traditions,' he said. 'India is fanatical about cricket and the closest you get to that in England is right here in Yorkshire. It's in the DNA. If you can have a partnership on a cricket level and be able to say, 'the club should be safe forever if we look after this money', why wouldn't you do it? It seems like a no-brainer.' One change is already in the works, with the Sun Group preparing to bring the team into line with the 'Sunrisers' teams they already have in India and South Africa. After five seasons attempting to foster new allegiances to the Superchargers name, they will need to start afresh in 2026. 'One of the implications of selling if you're going to have different brands. If you're not comfortable with that, don't sell,' concludes Patel. 'Our brand will change and that decision will be made over the next couple of months. What we've got to do is make sure the audience we have for the Superchargers translates to whatever the new brand is.'

Dahod police nab five fugitives, including POCSO accused

Vadodara: In a coordinated crackdown, Dahod district police arrested five absconding accused involved in six criminal cases in a single day. Among those apprehended was a man wanted in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case. According to officials, the arrests were made within 24 hours, and the accused had been on the run for periods ranging from a few months to several years. The offences against them were registered between 2018 and 2025. Four of the five people were involved in bootlegging activities in violation of liquor prohibition laws. Hardik Barjod, who had been absconding since 2018, was arrested for his involvement in a kidnapping case and a POCSO Act offence. Police traced his location based on specific inputs. Another key arrest was that of Nura Mandod, who was wanted in two liquor prohibition violation cases since last year. Mandod already had five other offences registered against him, bringing the total to seven. Two more bootleggers — Sanju alias Sanjay Patel and Pango alias Sanjay Patel — were also nabbed. Both were wanted in separate bootlegging cases registered in 2024 and 2025. Police also arrested Prakash Vakhla, son of Bharatsinh Vakhla, who had contested the 2022 Devgadh Baria assembly elections on a Congress ticket.

Yorkshire CEO bemoans no home Ashes or India Test on next tours

Yorkshire CEO Sanjay Patel has questioned Headingley being overlooked for hosting a Test with Australia or India in their next tours to county will not stage an Ashes Test in 2027 nor will England play India at the venue in will be the only one of the main Test venues in the country not to host a game in the two standout home says missing out on those two huge games will create financial problems for Yorkshire."Unfortunately we don't get that opportunity again in the next five years which is really hurting us as a club, and hurts cricket in the region," he told BBC Radio Leeds. Last month, Headingley was the venue for the first match of the current series between England and than 70,000 fans attended over the course of the match, which England won by five wickets deep into the last session on the final day as they chased down 371 in the fourth was another memorable match at the historic ground, famous for its Ashes classics in 1981 and 2019. "Headingley has a brilliant history of staging these games and that's another to add to the list," said Patel."Everyone can be very proud of the advert we put on for Headingley and cricket in Yorkshire." Patel, who replaced Stephen Vaughan as the club's CEO last year, also said that the match produced a profit for the club in excess of £3m, a huge financial windfall."At the moment, we're heavily reliant on Test match cricket, particularly when you get an India or Australia," he said."You need to maximise the revenue opportunities that they bring because that helps you in your five-year cycle." 2027 Ashes series venues: Lord's, Kia Oval, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Utilita Bowl2029 India series venues: Lord's, Kia Oval, Edgbaston, Emirates Old Trafford, Utilita Bowl In the next home Ashes series in two years' time, both Headingley and Emirates Old Trafford will miss out, with Trent Bridge in Nottingham the most northerly venue in the five-match contrast, there will be two Tests in London at Lord's and the Kia Oval, one at Edgbaston in Birmingham and the Utilita Bowl just outside Southampton will stage one for the first 2029, Old Trafford will host an India Test instead of Trent Bridge, with Headingley again overlooked in the five-match venue will stage a women's Ashes Test in 2027, but that will not generate the same revenue as a men's Test. 'Desperately needed' It will be the fourth time in the last seven Ashes series in England that Headingley has not been on the list, while the ground will only have staged two Tests against India in the last six home series since it was promoted to at least four Tests in 2011. "We're incredibly disappointed," said Patel."The club has gone through a pretty turbulent time in the last three or four years and we desperately needed games like we had against India recently."It desperately needed an Ashes Test in '27 and another India Test in '29."At a time where we feel like we really needed help, we haven't been given those games."So we need to adapt to that and think about what that means to our business model and hopefully in the next cycle, the ECB are kinder to us and understand the strategic importance of cricket in Yorkshire."

Tembo Defence plans to make 1911 .45 caliber pistol and ammo

Nagpur: Tembo Defence, the company that was allotted 100 acres of land in Amravati by the Maharashtra Industries Development Corporation (MIDC), plans to make '1911 .45 calibre' pistols and ammunition. The plant at Amravati may also make ammunition for semi-automatic handguns. The pistol would be made using Austrian technology. Tembo Defence, which is a subsidiary of Tembo Global, will be one more entrant into this segment. The .45 calibre was brought under the non-prohibited category around eight years ago. Now, private individuals can purchase the weapon after getting an arms licence. This led to other private players starting manufacturing the weapons too, said sources among licensed arms dealers. Responding to TOI queries, company managing director Sanjay Patel said, "We are setting up a dedicated facility at Amravati, which will serve as a hub for precision manufacturing. We are also exploring additional locations across India to scale up our defence capacity. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding to secure Austrian technology for small arms." The company is eyeing demand from armed forces, paramilitary, state police, and private security agencies. Even as the arms will be tailored to Indian operational needs, the company is also eyeing export markets. Sources said the .45 calibre guns of other manufacturers are available in the licensed arms dealers' outlets. The .45 calibre guns are known for their power and are used by law enforcement agencies abroad.
