'Owners Not Okay With Muslims Due To Pak Issue': IIT Graduate Rejected By Bengaluru Landlords

Last Updated: The X user said brokers have failed to recommend him an accommodation in a place of his choice in Bengaluru as they all told him that "owners not okay with Muslims" An IIT-Madras alumnus has claimed that he has been rejected by multiple landlords in Bengaluru because of his religious identity, amid tensions between India and Pakistan. Identifying himself as Sanjeed on X, he said brokers have failed to recommend him an accommodation in a place of his choice. He said he visited four such homes with brokers, but at the end of the day, they all told him 'owners not okay with Muslims". Asking if there were any areas in Bengaluru that were not 'islamophobic", he said he would optimise for that. In an earlier post, he had mentioned that he was looking for a 2 BHK in Indiranagar or Koramangala – known to be preferred by IT professionals. 'Saw around 4 places with brokers. at the end of the day broker says 'sorry owners not okay with Muslims, due to Pak issues"…what areas in blr are not islamophobic? will optimize for that," he said in his post on X. 'I am so sorry, Sanjeed, that you are facing this issue. This is not acceptable at all. Here are some area suggestions considering the situation you are encountering: Queens Road, Shivaji Nagar, Kora Second Block, Richmond, Cox Town. I have stayed at Queens and Kora Second Block. My landlords were/are Muslims as well. You should not have any problems here," (sic) an internet user said. Another user said: 'North bangalore is pretty chill with amazing gated societies. Do consider areas behind Manyata tech park, Bhartiya city, Hennur and everything from Hebbal to Yalahanka has quite nice societies. South Elec city is very nice." (sic) In fact, in another post, Sanjeed even said if Bengaluru does not work out for him, he would prefer moving to a place like Dubai. He, however, thanked all those who had recommended other locations for him with broker details. One internet user even asked him to move to Gurugram, which is a major IT hub. 'Should come to gurgaon no one cares to my knowledge," (sic) one individual commented on the post, which has more than 50,000 views. Another individual invited him to work in Indonesia. 'Happy to chat if getting out of Bangalore becomes a priority. Jakarta/Indoneisa is a great place to live and we are building our AI team now," (sic) the user said. Some, however, were not impressed by his use of the term 'islamophobic" and slammed him for it. While calling it a choice on part of the landlords, one user said: 'Dude, no need to use big words like Islamophobia etc. just like you choose not to eat no halal meat, owner choose not to give it to Muslims. Both of you choose things based on religion. You can be called as Hindu phobic for eating halal meat." (sic) First Published: May 28, 2025, 17:52 IST

"Not Okay With Muslims": IIT Graduate Alleges Housing Bias In Bengaluru

Bengaluru: An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras graduate alleged that he was denied housing in multiple Bengaluru neighbourhoods due to his Muslim identity. Mohammed Sanjeed, who recently announced his upcoming wedding, was house-hunting in India's tech hub. On May 24, he posted on X, seeking leads for a 2BHK in Indiranagar or Koramangala. Two days later, his hopeful search turned into frustration. "Saw around 4 places with brokers. At the end of the day, the broker says 'sorry, owners are not okay with Muslims, due to Pakistan issues,'" Mr Sanjeed wrote in a quote-post. "What is this BS, man? What areas in Bengaluru are not Islamophobic? Will optimise for that," he added. In a follow-up, he added, "Or just exit Bengaluru altogether, go to Dubai or something." saw around 4 places with brokers at the end of the day broker says "sorry owners not okay with Muslims, due to Pak issues" what is this bs man what areas in blr are not islamophobic? will optimize for that — sanjeed (@sanjeed_i) May 26, 2025 Reacting to Mr Sanjeed's experience, several X users reached out to him. A user commented, "I am so sorry, Sanjeed, that you are facing this issue. This is not acceptable at all. "Hi brother, I recently got married so I can understand the anxiety of closing the house and with that, you have to deal with all this, in any case, you can stay with us until you figure things out." Sorry, you had to experience this." This is very unfair. Sorry you had to experience this. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and killing over 100 terrorists. For four days since the attack, cross-border firing, drone infiltration attempts by Pakistan and interceptions by India's defence systems kept tempers running high on both sides until a ceasefire was announced on May 10. While the ceasefire between India and Pakistan has mostly held since May 10, tensions remain. On May 27, the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both countries held their weekly hotline conversation to manage border concerns and ensure stability along the Line of Control.
