Wild elephant tramples woman to death in Nilgiris
UDHAGAMANDALAM: A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the Pandalur range of the Gudalur forest division in the Nilgiris on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Lakshmi, who was aged around 70 years. She was a retired TANTEA (Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corporation Limited) worker. Lakshmi, who was residing in the TANTEA quarters in Pandalur, went out around 6 am on Tuesday to use a restroom situated just a few meters from the quarters. According to forest range officer Sanjeevi, the misty conditions made visibility very low, causing Lakshmi not to notice the elephant's presence near the restroom. The elephant attacked her, and she died on the spot. Postmortem was conducted on the body in the government hospital in Pandalur. Forest officials provided an initial compensation of Rs 50,000 to the victim's family.

Pocso case: Man gets 20 years in jail
Trichy: The Mayiladuthurai district and sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a 25-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl . Police said T Sanjeevi from a village near Mayiladuthurai sexually assaulted the Class VIII girl and threatened her with dire consequences five years ago. The ordeal came to light after the girl became pregnant. Following a complaint from the girl's parents, police registered a case under Section 6 of Pocso Act and Section 506-2 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested Sanjeevi. Public prosecutor R Seyon represented the state. Judge R Vijayakumari found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault and seven years of imprisonment for criminal intimidation. The judge ordered the accused to undergo the sentences concurrently. She also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 for each offence. Sanjeevi was lodged at Cuddalore central prison. Mayiladuthurai superintendent of police G Stalin lauded the police and prosecution team for the conviction.
