2 Punjab cops suspended for thrashing journalist in public
Batala: Two Punjab Police commandos have been caught on camera brutally assaulting a journalist in clear daylight on a busy street in Punjab's Batala. Both of them have been suspended and face an inquiry, DSP Sanjiv Kumar said on Thursday. Disturbing footage shows them kicking the journalist repeatedly even after he collapsed on the street. The victim, Balwinder Singh, is a reporter with a Hindi daily. The video clip shows a uniformed cop kicking him in the head four times as he lay in a puddle, unresponsive and posing no threat to him. Batala senior SP Suhail Qasim Mir said the incident occurred on Aug 1, but came to the fore when the video was shared widely on social media on Wednesday. Mir said the two attackers were identified as sub-inspectors Mandeep Singh and Surjit of the 5th Battalion of Punjab Police Commandos, stationed in Bathinda. They were deployed to Batala, 220km away, on law-and-order duty ahead of Independence Day. The two officers were staying at a hotel in Batala during their deployment, DSP Kumar said. It was there that journalist Balwinder approached them and asked some questions — reportedly in connection with their presence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Zachepylivka: New Container Houses – Take A Look At The Prices! The 2-minute 16-second clip shows two men — one in uniform and the other in civvies — repeatedly punching and kicking the journalist as bystanders watch in silence. During the assault, Balwinder collapses into a water-filled pothole and lies motionless as the attackers walk away. Shockingly, the man in civilian clothes returns to kick the victim again. Moments later, the uniformed officer also returns, seemingly to check on the victim, and then walks away. The video shows Singh lying motionless on the road while passersby continue to look on. Eventually, a group of locals comes to his aid, but the journalist appears unresponsive. He was taken to hospital. Based on the victim's statement, police registered an FIR on Aug 2. Both officers were suspended and the commander of 5 Battalion was informed to initiate disciplinary action, said the SSP . AIIMS-P to use AI-powered devices to improve patient care
Patna: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, has entered into a partnership with the e-health section of the ministry of health and family welfare to develop artificial intelligence (AI)-powered solutions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It has recently also procured several AI-enabled medical devices to enhance patient treatment. Head of cardiothoracic surgery department at AIIMS-Patna, Dr Sanjiv Kumar, said that with the AI revolutionising healthcare, education, and research on a large scale, it has become crucial to build a strong foundational understanding of AI principles and applications now a days. "AI algorithms can detect maladies like cancer, heart disease, and neurological problems from medical images such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. AI helps doctors determine patterns that human doctors may miss, thus improving their accuracy in diagnosing patients. Even a beginner can interpret an ECG properly with the AI-driven instrument," he said. Dr Kumar further pointed out that orthopaedic department of the AIIMS-Patna has started robotic surgery for the treatment of its patients with higher accuracy. In fact, AI has revolutionised the health care system in modern times with accurate data analysis and predictive health care, he added. Recently, the state health department has decided to launch an intensive screening of TB patients by using the technology of AI. Teams from the health department would move from village to village along with hand-held X-ray machines and AI-controlled mobile kits to identify the TB-affected people. Health department sources said that at present there are nearly two lakh TB patients in the state and more than 10,000 people affected by this disease have died during the last two years (2022-23 and 2023-24). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Pramod Kumar Singh, director-in-chief (disease control) of state health department, said that the proposed screening would reveal the exact number of people suffering from TB. "AI will not only help immediate detection of TB patients with the help of X-ray and data analytics but also suggest the protocol of treatment of patients on the basis of their test reports. The department hopes that the screening will be completed soon so that proper treatment of the patients may be started at the earliest," he said. Dr Satish Kumar of Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) said that equipment based on AI technology must be procured at all the health centres of the state with a view to ensuring early diagnosis and proper treatment of the patients. These machines would facilitate in reducing unwarranted rush of patients at the hospitals by curtailing the time of treatment, he said.

Coordinated with inter-state aides to leak NEET paper: ‘Kingpin' Sanjiv Mukhiya tells CBI
The alleged mastermind of the 2024 NEET-UG paper leak, Sanjiv Kumar alias Sanjiv Mukhiya, told the CBI during questioning that he 'coordinated with his inter-state accomplices and people from Bihar' to commit the crime and that his aides had provided logistics to members of the 'solver gang', sources said. Bihar's Economic Offences Unit (EOU) arrested Saniiv Mukhiya and two others from Danapur on Friday in connection with five cases, including two lodged in 2024. He is one of the main accused in the Patna NEET-UG paper leak case of May last year. The case, which was first probed by local police, was later handed over to the EOU. The CBI subsequently took over the case. So far, at least 20 chargesheets have been filed in the case and 37 people, including Mukhiya, has been arrested. Mukhiya has also been named the main accused in the 2023 teachers recruitment examination (TRE-II) paper leak. Mukhiya was on Saturday remanded in EOU custody for three days. He was questioned by both EOU and CBI officers. Sources said the CBI asked Mukhiya to reconstruct the events leading to the NEET paper leak in Patna and about the 'solver gang', which would allegedly hire scholars to solve leaked question papers of competitive examinations. The questions also touched on his connection with the owners of Patna's Learn Boys Hostel and Play School, where some exaninees were allegedly called to revise solved answers a day before the NEET-UG examination. Burnt solved answers were found from the premises of the school by Patna police. Mukhiya, who also faced cases of cheating and fraud in 2012 and 2013, is from Nagarnausa, Nalanda. He got the monicker, Mukhiya, because his wife Mamata Devi had been a village head. Devi had unsuccessfully contested the 2020 Assembly elections.
