UP Woman Dies After Delivering Baby As OT Technician Posing As Doctor Performs C-Section

Last Updated: UP Police have sealed the illegal hospital, arrested the fake technician, his son, and the Asha worker involved, and launched a manhunt for the hospital-owning couple. News18 A late-night delivery turned into a nightmare in Gorakhpur when a young woman died on the operating table as her cesarean was performed not by a doctor, but by an OT technician pretending to be one. Shockingly, this was his 15th surgery. Unfortunately, the horrifying incident came to light only after her death. On the complaint of her husband, UP Police have sealed the illegal hospital, arrested the fake technician, his son, and the Asha worker involved, and launched a manhunt for the hospital-owning couple who fled after the incident. On April 27, the victim, a resident of Gohali Basant village, began experiencing labour pains. Her family, concerned about complications, called local Asha worker Gangotri Devi. She warned them that the case was critical and directed them to Shri Govind Hospital in Bansgaon. At the hospital, the owners – Amrish Rai and his wife Sanno – told the family that the unborn baby was in breech position and that an immediate C-section was necessary. 'We immediately agreed fearing my wife's life. Around 9 pm, a man named Pannalal was introduced as the hospital's surgeon, who entered the operating theatre and performed the operation. In reality, Pannalal, was an OT technician with no medical degree. The baby was delivered, but the mother's condition began to deteriorate rapidly," Dinesh Chaurasia, the victim's husband, told police. However, after delivering the baby, her condition deteriorated, her platelet counts dropped drastically and she breathed her last on Monday. 'We trusted them, and they killed her. We thought they were helping us. They told us our baby was in danger, and there was no time to delay. Now she's gone, and the people who did this to her just disappeared," Chaurasia further said. Following an uproar by the woman's family, police reached hospital and began an inquiry that revealed shocking details. Shri Govind Hospital was running without a licence, and neither Amrish nor Sanno had any medical qualifications. Over the past three years, they had repeatedly called Pannalal, the technician, to perform cesareans on pregnant women. During interrogation, Pannalal admitted to conducting 15 surgeries. 'Sanno handled the normal deliveries. For operations, they would call me," he reportedly told the police. The hospital charged families Rs 5,000–Rs20,000 per delivery. The staff included untrained nurses paid Rs 5,000 monthly, and Asha workers received commissions for bringing in patients. Hospitals Sealed, Three Arrested Police sealed both Shri Govind Hospital and a second facility — Hari Medicare — run by Pannalal's son Niraj Kumar. Pannalal, Niraj, and Asha worker Gangotri were arrested. The hospital-owning couple, Amrish and Sanno, are absconding. A search operation is underway to locate them. 'We've arrested the main accused technician and shut down both illegal facilities. Action is being taken on all fronts," said SSP Dr Gaurav Grover. He said UP Police is also writing to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to address the larger issue of such fake practices. Back in Gohali Basant, the family demands justice. 'We won't cremate her until those responsible are arrested. This isn't just our tragedy — it could happen to anyone," said her father. First Published: May 05, 2025, 09:46 IST
