'Jhukna nahin hai': Minister Shivraj Chouhan tells farmers as India faces 50% US tariffs, ‘will explore new markets'

Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday asked farmers "not to worry" about the 50 per cent tariff India faces from the United States. Speaking at an event, the BJP leader assured that India will work to explore 'new markets' amid the "testing times" due to high tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. The union minister reiterated PM Modi's statement and said that India will not comprise on the 'interests of the country's farmers even if it means paying a heavy price'.(Sansad Tv) Trump announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on India last week, citing purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine war. With this, the total tariff rate India faces increased to 50 percent. The first 25 per cent were imposed on July 30 by Trump due to New Delhi's tariffs 'being the highest in the world' and as a penalty for its purchase of Russian oil, military equipment and participation in BRICS. 'Will not compromise' The minister reiterated PM Narendra Modi's recent statement and said that India will not comprise on the 'interests of the country's farmers even if it means paying a heavy price'. "Farmers, don't worry. Let's see what will happen. We are a country of 140 crore people. There will be a little bit of difficulty but we will see. We will explore new markets. India is such a big market, it will be consumed here itself," said Chouhan while addressing a group of farmer leaders in Delhi. "India's 140 crore population is not a weakness but our strength," he said, adding that "this is our testing time and we need not bow down (before the US)". "Koi jhukne ka kaam nahin hai. Samjhauta barabari pe hota hai. Thode humare, thode tumhare (There is no need to bow down. The agreement should be between equals with give and take)," he said. The minister further noted that the US should keep the agriculture sector aside as there is no "fair comparison" in the scale of farm operations and farm holdings between India and the US. Following the announcement of the 50 per cent tariff on India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the interests of farmers will remain a "top priority" for India. "India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers and fishermen. I know I will personally have to pay a heavy price but I am prepared for it," said Modi. As India and the US work towards establishing a bilateral trade deal, agriculture has been a point of discord between the two nations. Based on reports, the US has insisted on access to agriculture, dairy and fishery sectors, against which India has put its foot down. (With inputs from PTI)

RS chair's remark on ‘halt work' rule leads to stir, adjournment

Rajya Sabha proceedings were stalled by disruptions on Friday as the opposition continued to push for discussion on several issues including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar under Rule 267 that calls for suspending business. Ironically, the chair's comment that Rule 267 was being used as a tool to create disorder in the House led to an uproar from the Opposition and the House did not transact business. Opposition leaders on Friday protested and demanded an explanation on why their Rule 267 notices were not being admitted in the Rajya Sabha (Sansad Tv) After deputy chairman Harivansh informed the members that 20 notices filed under Rule 267 to suspend business and take up pressing issues were rejected, Opposition leaders protested and demanded an explanation on why their notices were not being admitted. The deputy chairman said since the notices were to discuss a slew of issues, it would not be possible to admit them. 'It is interesting to note that members are often giving suspension notices to discuss a wide variety of subjects. Today's notices contain five different issues on which suspension of business has been sought by members... It appears that notices under Rule 267 are being used as a tool to create disorder in the House,' he said, which led to an uproar. Harivansh said that on July 21, six different issues were highlighted, while four different issues were submitted on each day from July 22-24.'Similarly, 7, 12 and 11 different subjects were mentioned in notices received on 5th, 6th and 7th August, respectively. Today, 267 notices contain five different issues on which suspension of listed business are sought by members,' he said. He then cited a previous ruling by former Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu who said: 'Members belonging to the same party have given these notices on different issues... This suggests that there is no single view on the urgency of issues for me to take up suspension of rules'. Opposition leaders protested the rejection of notices and John Brittas of the CPIM said the rule should be 'scrapped'. TMC's Derek O'Brien said, 'Let me today, on behalf of all of us, --the LoP is not here -- make a commitment from here, that on Monday morning, we all will submit on the subject of SIR …You admit that you will take up the subject.' The House was then adjourned till 12 noon. Disruptions continued when the House reassembled for the Question Hour, leading to another adjournment for the day. The Chair also noted that 56 hours and 49 minutes of the House's time have so far been lost.

Over 2 lakh Indians renounced Indian citizenship in 2024: Govt tells Lok Sabha

More than two lakh Indians renounced their citizenship in 2024, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday. Opposition MPs create ruckus in Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, in New Delhi on Friday. (Sansad Tv) Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said this in a written response to queries on the number of individuals who have renounced their Indian citizenship and taken citizenship of other countries during the last five years. The minister was replying to queries by Congress MP K C Venugopal. "As per the information available with the Ministry, the number of Indians who gave up their Indian citizenship was 85,256 in 2020, 1,63,370 in 2021, 2,25,620 in 2022, 2,16,219 in 2023 and 2,06,378 in 2024, Singh said. For reference, such cases were 1,22,819 in 2011, 1,20,923 in 2012, 1,31,405 in 2013 and 1,29,328 in 2014, he added. The reasons for renouncing Indian citizenship or taking foreign citizenship are personal and known only to the individual, the government said. "The government recognises the potential of the global workplace in an era of the knowledge economy. It has also brought about a transformational change in its engagement with the Indian diaspora," the MoS said. A successful, prosperous and influential diaspora is an asset for India, which stands to gain a lot from tapping their networks and productive utilisation of the soft power that comes from having such a flourishing diaspora, he said. The government's efforts are also aimed at harnessing the diaspora's potential to its fullest including through sharing of knowledge and expertise, he said. In response to another query, the government shared that according to available inputs, the population of overseas Indians is 3,43,56,193, out of which 1,71,81,071 are Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and 1,71,75,122 are Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
