‘Last-minute requests not acceptable': Exams clashing with TMCP rally won't be rescheduled, says Calcutta University interim V-C Santa Datta De
The interim vice-chancellor of the Calcutta University, Santa Datta De, said on Saturday that the BCom Semester 4 and BA LLB Semester 4 exams will be held on August 28 as per schedule, despite demands that they be rescheduled as they fall on the same day as the foundation day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the Trinamool Congress's student wing. De had said on Friday that she received an official communication from the West Bengal government urging that the exams be rescheduled. The exams are to be held between 2 pm to 5 pm, around the same time the TMCP foundation rally takes place in Kolkata. 'How can such a request come? I do not understand…This is very unprecedented,' De told The Indian Express on Saturday. 'I feel that the government should always be neutral, as it is everyone's (government). If the government and the party mix, it becomes a big problem for others to work and perform their duties,' De said. Slamming the TMCP and criticising TMC chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, De said, 'I would say a ruling party's students' wing is raising unruly students, gang rapists, goons…for them, universities are registering FIRs. The party supremo could have said the foundation day this year is cancelled because you are tarnishing my image…She would have gained far more popularity…more votes. Instead of doing that, they are putting pressure on students and us.' De said that accepting one political party's demand would mean exceptions have to be made for other parties. 'If I make an exception, it will apply to all political parties…I have to consider all of them. Then, when will we work? How will the university make a schedule or function?' University schedules are prepared following the academic calendar, De said. 'The exam dates were fixed two or three months ago. Such last-minute requests are not acceptable,' she added. 'The main responsibility of students is to study and write exams. As guardians, when our children do something wrong, we reprimand them; the same applies here. The supremo should have reprimanded them and asked them to celebrate Foundation Day on another date,' she said. According to De, an emergency syndicate meeting will be held on Monday to make a final decision on the matter. 'One has to realise that there are hundreds of colleges under Calcutta University, so it is not easy to change dates. It is a mammoth task,' she said. Meanwhile, Trinankur Bhattacharya, state TMCP president, said students could face transportation issues as people from across the state arrive. 'The university should have thought on humanitarian grounds, but the V-C has a politically vindictive stand. That is reflected in her statement,' he said

Edu dept extends CAP deadline to July 30 amid OBC quota uncertainty
Kolkata: The higher education department has extended the undergraduate application deadline on the centralised admission portal to July 30. This was the third extension amid the uncertainty over OBC seat reservations. The OBC matter is likely to be heard in the Supreme Court on Monday. "No decision on seat reservations has been taken. A merit list cannot be prepared without a verdict on reservations," said an official, hoping to get some clarity on Monday. Till Friday evening, 3,56,202 UG candidates had registered on the portal and submitted 20,49,517 applications. Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said, "As the reservation issue is yet to be resolved, there is no other option but to extend the deadline again." But another principal said, "How long will the dates be pushed back? Admissions in other states are almost over. Even institutes outside the centralised portal have completed their process. I am not sure if we will get any student." CU interim VC Santa Datta De said, "I don't know why the govt hasn't solved this yet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo We finished admissions to our in-house UG courses, and classes will start from Aug 1, but affiliated colleges don't know when they can start filling seats." On campuses, ‘good riddance' vs murmurs against closure notice on union rooms
Kolkata: After the Calcutta High Court ordered the higher education department to keep student union rooms closed across colleges and universities, some felt it was a 'good riddance' while others expressed concerns about the closure order, especially since college elections were suspended for the past seven years. In the recent past, maintaining control over union rooms and student activities triggered numerous clashes across campuses. From organising Saraswati Puja at Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College to vandalism at Jadavpur University — in every case, union rooms were considered to be the root of all troubles. Calcutta University interim VC Santa Datta De's decision to lock union rooms across seven campuses after an incident at the Rajabazar campus — where some former students reportedly consumed alcohol in the union room — had prompted a student agitation. Datta said: "The decision we took has been proven absolutely right after the high court order. I raised my voice against all such illegal activities in union rooms. Now it has become easier for other principals to lock union rooms following the high court order. However, I believe that there should be academicians in the college governing bodies instead of local political leaders; only then can political influence on the campuses be restricted." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Several principals across colleges seemed quite relieved after the order came. Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Day College principal Pankaj Roy said: "I tried several times to shut the union room but it became difficult due to a section of students. We closed the union room immediately after the court order." Another principal, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "There has been no union elections since 2017. We are helpless because we cannot instruct students to vacate union rooms because past students and even local leaders have free access there. However, after this order, it will be easier for us to restrict such activities." On the other hand, leaders of different campuses were somewhat upset. One TMCP neta, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We organize several activities that we cannot stop because several students need help for many issues." Another TMCP neta said: "We used to sit in the union room during college hours; now if college doesn't permit it, we will not sit there. This is not a big deal."
