RAIPUR: Three people including afive-year-old boy were trampled to death in an attack by an elephant and its calf, wreaking havoc across villages in Lailunga forest range in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday night. The victims were asleep inside their mud house when the elephants rolled the boy and woman in their trunk and threw them on ground. Besides, a man was trampled by elephants after he came under the debris of the house, the pachyderms damaged. The deadly rampage unfolded across Gosaidih and Mohanpur villages in Dharamjaigarh Forest Division in Raigarh. Eyewitnesses said the elephants first stormed into the villages, damaging several mud and brick homes, and then targeted fleeing residents. The two pachyderms then went to Mohanpur village and attacked Santara Bai Rathiya and Purushottam Khadia, leading to their death, Jitendra Upadhyay, Divisional Forest Officer of Dharamjaigarh told reporters. The DFO said that the team of forest department was alerted and separate teams rushed to the spot for rescue as well as recovering the bodies. The pair has been moving erratically through different villages, leaving a trail of destruction. Many residents have fled their homes, seeking refuge in safer areas. Angry villagers have accused the forest department of failing to issue timely warnings or provide adequate protection. Demands are growing for night patrols, emergency alert systems, and rapid response forest squads to prevent further casualties. DFO said that teams of forest personnel are closely monitoring the movement of elephants and alerting locals. Over 320 people were killed in such incidents over the last five years.

Raigarh, Jul 23 (PTI) Two elephants went on the rampage and trampled three individuals, including a three-year-old boy, to death at two places in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, officials said on Wednesday. A female elephant and her calf destroyed a few houses in Gosaidih village in Anglikala area on Tuesday night and trampled three-year-old Satyam Rawat to death. The two jumbos then strode to Mohanpur village and attacked Santara Bai Rathiya (46) and Purushottam Khadia (48), leading to their death, said Jitendra Upadhyay, Divisional Forest Officer of Dharamjaigarh. Both incidents occurred in the Lailunga forest range under the Dharamjaigarh forest division. He said forest department personnel rushed to the spots and shifted the bodies. An immediate aid of Rs 25,000 has been provided to the kin of each of the deceased, the official said. Teams of forest personnel are closely monitoring the movement of elephants and alerting locals. Several incidents of human-elephant conflicts have been reported in the last ten years in the northern region of Chhattisgarh. According to Forest Department officials, more than 320 people were killed in such incidents over the last five years. Similar incidents have been reported in some districts of the central region in the last few years, particularly in Surguja, Raigarh, Korba, Surajpur and Balrampur.
