Vanuatu Cricket building for the future and spreading the net wide, in the search for young talent to join their new academy

A new academy has just been launched by Vanuatu Cricket, with the aim of drawing in the best male and female talent from across the country, and building a new generation of national team players. The venture is being underpinned by funding partner Interchange, and the year-long programme of skills and academic training will be managed by Head of High Performance, Chris Laffan. Trials have already begun and eventually there will be 50 young cricketers at the academy, 30 from Port Vila and 20 from Santo and Tanna. And Vanuatu Cricket's Chief Executive, Tim Cutler, says there is a particular emphasis on taking the game in the outer islands to a higher level.

Sky Sports pundit replaced Nuno Espirito Santo as manager in one of most doomed spells in dugout

Two careers have gone in very different directions since TOOK A PUN-T Sky Sports pundit replaced Nuno Espirito Santo as manager in one of most doomed spells in dugout NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO is hoping to complete a stunning achievement by taking Nottingham Forest into the Champions League. But he was once replaced by a Sky Sports pundit as manager at a previous job. 7 Nuno Espirito Santo was Valencia boss for just over one season Credit: Getty Images - Getty 7 He led the Spanish side to fourth in LaLiga but then quit just a few months later Credit: AFP And that led to one of the most doomed and infamous spells in the dugout. Santo, 51, spent 18 years as a curly-haired goalkeeper where he was largely a back-up for the No1. That included during two stints at Porto, where he was part of the Champions League-winning squad under Jose Mourinho. But after retiring as a player in 2010, the Portuguese stepped into management - firstly spending two years at Rio Ave in his homeland. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL FOREST SHOCK Awoniyi 'in induced coma after abdominal injury that could've been fatal' He would later go on to manage Porto before four years with Wolves, 17 games at Tottenham, a stint at Al-Ittihad and now working wonders at the City Ground. But it was his second gaffer's gig that sparked the links to the TV pundit. Santo led Rio Ave to the Europa League for the first time in their history at the end of his second season in charge. And that saw him attract plenty of interest - including from Spain. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Santo signed a one-year deal in July 2014 to take over as Valencia manager. By the January of that 2014-15 campaign, he signed a contract extension until 2018. And he finished the season in fourth, taking four points off Real Madrid and picking up three LaLiga manager of the month awards. However, Santo suffered a poor start to the following campaign in both the league and Champions League. So much so that he resigned in November 2015. His replacement was... Gary Neville. Neville's brother Phil and Salvador Gonzalez took interim charge before Gary's appointment on December 5 - Gonzalez has stepped in to the Valencia dugout as makeshift temporary boss SEVEN times in total. 'MILLION MILES AWAY' But things went horribly wrong for Neville, whose only previous coaching experience was as Roy Hodgson's assistant with England. His lack of Spanish didn't help, either, and the ex-Manchester United defender failed to win any of his first nine LaLiga matches in charge. Valencia were also stuffed 7-0 by Barcelona in a Copa del Rey thrashing and Neville was eventually put out of his misery on March 30 with three league wins from 16 and his side 14th in the table, just six points clear of the relegation zone. Santo and Neville's managerial careers have gone in very different directions since. The Portuguese gaffer succeeded at Wolves and is doing a tremendous job at Nottingham Forest, securing European football for next season. Gary Neville's Valencia record Dates 2 December 2015 to 30 March 2016 Matches 28 Wins 10 Draws 7 Defeats 11 Win % 35.71 Goals scored 39 Goals conceded 38 Goal difference +1 Biggest defeat 7-0 vs Barcelona That was guaranteed with Sunday's eventful 2-2 draw with East Midlands rivals Leicester - but the result did put a major dent in Forest's Champions League qualification dreams. And the match was overshadowed by Evangelos Marinakis storming on to the pitch to confront Santo about Taiwo Awoniyi's injury - which has seen the Nigerian placed in an induced coma after urgent surgery. For Neville, though, he has turned his back on management - and now sticks to the TV studios and commentary gantries. Reflecting on his Valencia nightmare and leaving coaching behind, he said: "It'll never happen, I'm a million miles away. "I love football and the camaraderie but I don't want to be in that environment any more. 'It was an unbelievable opportunity and it didn't go as well as I wanted it to, but I enjoyed every minute and it taught me a lot and things I will apply to my business life. 'I don't regret going to Spain and I would have liked to have stayed in Valencia for 18 months, but I wouldn't have continued in coaching. 'The buzz from football up to the age of 32 was incredible and that can probably never be replaced, but compared to the last three years of my career, I enjoy what I'm doing now far more." 7 Santo was replaced by Gary Neville Credit: EPA 7 The Englishman endured a horror four-month stint in charge Credit: Getty 7 Santo was named manager of the month three times in his full season Credit: AP:Associated Press 7 He is now preparing to take Nottingham Forest into Europe Credit: Getty

Nuno Espirito Santo looks unrecognisable with flowing long hair in playing days as backup goalkeeper

Just ask Nuno Espirito Santo. Forest still have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League - although Sunday's painful draw at home to already-relegated East Midlands rivals Leicester dented those dreams. And their manager has a very distinct look - the bald head and the grey beard. But it turns out that has not always been the case. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL FOREST SHOCK Awoniyi 'in induced coma after abdominal injury that could've been fatal' In fact, Santo once had luscious flowing locks back in his playing days as a goalkeeper. The Portuguese spent 18 years as a senior pro across eight different clubs. That included two stints at Porto, where he scored a penalty and was part of the Champions League-winning squad under Jose Mourinho. And he did so with a full head of curly, dark hair. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Photos from his playing days show off the thick mop, making him barely recognisable from the man we have got used to seeing in the dugout over recent years at Wolves, Tottenham and Forest. And although it does start to recede towards the end of his career on the pitch, Santo still has a decent amount of hair. Mad moment Premier League manager stuns his own players with '10 out of 10 dive' off top board The goalkeeper retired in 2010 but fast forward to his days as Valencia manager and it is a very different story. Gone are the curls and replaced with the buzzed shaven look, with his dark beard grown out. He spent just over a season in charge at Valencia - where he was replaced by Gary Neville - before one campaign with Porto. Then Santo arrived in England with Wolves in 2017, enjoying four years at Molineux before his brief 17-game nightmare at Spurs. He regrouped at Al-Ittihad before heading back to the Premier League to take over at Nottingham Forest in December 2023. Forest finished 17th last season but Santo has masterminded an incredible surge towards the top of the table this term. However, a run of one win in their last six matches has threatened to derail the team who were third from December to April. The draw with Leicester saw Forest drop to seventh with two games left to try and get back into the top five - and crucially they host Chelsea on the final day of the season. But the 2-2 stalemate was arguably most notable for what happened after the full-time whistle when owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed on to the pitch to confront Santo. The fiery Greek businessman's frustration was over the confusion regarding Taiwo Awoniyi, who got injured late on when he clattered into the post. After initially suggesting he could carry on, Santo used his final substitution window to take off Elliot Anderson - meaning Awoniyi could not be replaced despite realising he could not continue. SunSport revealed Marinakis erupted again and far more ferociously in the tunnel - at Santo, Awoniyi and the club's medical staff. Awoniyi, meanwhile, underwent an urgent surgery on Monday with the rest of the procedure unable to be completed on Tuesday. That meant doctors placed the Nigerian striker in an induced coma and hope to conclude the surgery on Wednesday. 7 Santo played as a goalkeeper for 18 years Credit: Rex 7 He used to have dark curly hair Credit: AP 7 The former shot-stopper started receding by the end of his career Credit: AP 7 He was part of the Porto squad that won the Champions League Credit: AFP
