Former home of much-loved restaurant 'under offer' months after shock closure

The former home of a much-loved Italian restaurant in Yarm is now 'under offer'. Earlier this year, family-run firm Santoro's shocked diners by announcing it would be closing the doors to its popular high street restaurant for good. The news came just months after bosses marked 45 years in business - and shortly after the closure, the unit was put on the rental market with a £40,000 a year price tag. It has now been revealed that the 'rare opportunity' restaurant is 'under offer', according to agent Thomas:Stevenson. As previously reported, the closure of Santoro's was met with shock from Yarm residents, with the reasoning behind the decision never given. At the time, one person said: 'So sad to see this. We have had many, many wonderful meals, fabulous evenings, lunches and family celebrations in Santoro's.' Another added: 'Thank you for all the wonderful meals over the years. Santoro's has always been our special occasion restaurant of choice. 'We were always well looked after by the team and by several generations of the Serino family.' Since the closure in February, the restaurant has remained closed, with blindfolds down and the front door shut. The sign initially confirming the closure was then taken down. The Santoro's website still states its goodbye message: 'After a wonderful 45 years of business, we have decided to permanently close our doors. 'We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone that has supported us over the years.' Before that, it operated as a Chinese restaurant for 20 years. His son Ricci and grandsons, Mikey and Joe, continued the good reputation of the restaurant following Vincenzo's passing.

MIT grads killed in upstate NY plane crash planned to get engaged this summer

The MIT graduates killed in a private plane crash in upstate New York over the weekend had been planning to get engaged this summer, the man's grief-stricken father has revealed. James Sontoro and his longtime girlfriend Karenna Groff had been talking about tying the knot in the months leading up to Saturday's tragic wreck in Copake near the Massachusetts border. 'They were planning to get married and they were planning to get engaged in the summer,' Sontoro's dad, John Santoro, told Boston 25 News. The grieving father said the two families had shared their excitement over the upcoming proposal during the Christmas holiday period. The young couple were among the six people killed when the twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B they were on went down in a muddy field as they headed to the Catskills for a birthday celebration and the Passover holiday. Karenna's neuroscientist father Michael Groff, urologist mother Joy Saini, her paralegal brother Jared Groff and her brother's partner, partner Alexia Couyutas Duarte, also died. The couple, who met as freshmen at MIT, had only just relocated to Manhattan, according to Santoro's dad. Karenna, a former college soccer player who was named the 2022 NCAA woman of the year, had enrolled in medical school at New York University. Her boyfriend, a lacrosse-playing New Jersey native, had taken up a job as an investment associate for Silver Point, a hedge fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut, his father said. 'They were a wonderful family,' Santoro said in a statement shortly after the tragedy unfolded. 'The world lost a lot of very good people who were going to do a lot of good for the world if they had the opportunity. We're all personally devastated.' 'The 25 years we had with James were the best years of our lives,' he continued. 'The joy and love he brought us will be enough to last a lifetime.' Santoro, in an interview with the local TV outlet, described Karenna as a 'fantastic person.' 'I think after you met her parents, it became pretty clear where she got it from,' he said. The tragedy unfolded after the family had set off on Dr. Groff's jet from a White Plains airport Saturday morning. The plane had flown for less than an hour before, with no issues found, National Transportation Safety Board member Todd Inman told reporters Monday. Groff, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and experienced pilot, had been due to land the plane at the Columbia County Airport around noon. He alerted air traffic controllers that they'd missed their approach and were requesting directions for a second attempt when the tower indicated a 'low altitude alert' and suddenly lost contact. Within moments, the small plane went down in the field. Investigators obtained footage of the final seconds of the flight, which 'appears to show that the aircraft was intact and crashed at a high rate of descent into the ground,' Inman said. Investigators obtained footage of the final seconds of the flight, which 'appears to show that the aircraft was intact and crashed at a high rate of descent into the ground,' NTSB official Todd Inman told reporters during a briefing on Sunday. Groff was flying under instrument flight rules — which are used in poor visibility conditions, as opposed to visual flight rules — but it was too soon to say if reduced visibility from weather conditions was to blame for the wreck, he said. Albert Nixon, the NTSB's lead investigator for the case, said the agency is working with the National Weather Service to identify the full weather conditions near the airport that day. Inman also noted that because the Mitsubishi MU-2B is a particularly powerful plane, which can reach near jet speeds, it requires additional training to be flown. Groff, however, did complete the special training and received his certificate in October 2024, according to the NTSB. Investigators expect to be at the crash site for about a week and a full accident report could take between 12 and 24 months to complete, according to Inman. The full wreckage recovery is set to be completed by Tuesday evening, with the aircraft set to arrive at an NTSB base in Massachusetts. Given the plane's Japanese origins, Inman said the Japanese Safety Board has also been called to help investigate the crash. With Post wires

Two-day festival to celebrate pagan festival Litha at Durham farm

A two-day festival will celebrate the pagan festival of Litha. Dalton Moor Farm, a County Durham wellness centre, will host the event from June 20 to June 22. In ancient times, the festival – now known as Midsummer or the summer solstice – was held throughout the Northern Hemisphere to mark the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year. Dalton Moor Farm will be opening its meadows, woodland, and orchard to visitors for the event. The festival will kick off on the Saturday, with a focus on wellbeing. Visitors can participate in yoga, reiki, and explore the properties of essential oils. There will also be guided meditations, chanting, breathing exercises, forest bathing, tree hugging, and drumming for wellbeing. Live music and poetry will continue into the evening. Sunday will be dedicated to family fun with circus, dance, drumming, a forest school, and an adventure trail. Craft workshops, craft traders, and a variety of healthy food and drinks will be available throughout the weekend. Dr Jenny Connor has spent the past decade transforming Dalton Moor Farm into a leading centre of sustainable farming and food production. She said: "As far back as Anglo Saxon times and probably earlier, people understood the importance of working in harmony with the land and the cycles of the seasons, and that is the ethos of everything we do here at Dalton Moor Farm. "I hope as many people as possible will join us for a celebration of this seasonal milestone as we acknowledge and show our gratitude for life on Earth and the precious gifts each season brings us." Tickets for the event are priced at £190 for a family weekend ticket and £75 for individual adults. Tickets for Saturday only are £120 for a family and £50 for individual adults. Sunday tickets are £99 for a family and £40 for adults. Children's tickets are £10 each day. Car parking is also available at a charge of £15 per day. The dead in upstate New York plane crash included 2022 NCAA woman of the year and family members

A private plane that crashed in upstate New York over the weekend was carrying a close-knit family of physicians and distinguished recent student-athletes, bound for a trip to the Catskills for a birthday celebration and the Passover holiday. The twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B went down shortly after noon Saturday in a muddy field in Copake, New York, near the Massachusetts line, killing all six people aboard, according to authorities and a family member who spoke to The Associated Press. Among the victims were Karenna Groff, a former MIT soccer player named the 2022 NCAA woman of the year; her father, a neuroscientist, Dr. Michael Groff; her mother, Dr. Joy Saini, a urogynecologist and Karenna Groff's boyfriend, James Santoro, another recent MIT graduate, according to James' father, John Santoro. 'They were a wonderful family,' Santoro told AP. 'The world lost a lot of very good people who were going to do a lot of good for the world if they had the opportunity. We're all personally devastated.' Santoro said his son first met Groff as a freshman studying at MIT. Groff, who grew up in Weston, Massachusetts, was an All-American soccer player studying biomedical engineering. Santoro, a math major from New Jersey, played lacrosse for the school. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Groff co-founded openPPE, helping to create a new design of masks for essential workers. In 2023, she received the prestigious NCAA woman of the year award for the previous year for her on- and off-field accomplishments. 'Really, this recognition is a testament to my MIT women's soccer family and all of the guidance, support, and friendship they have provided for me over the years,' she said in an interview at the time. After graduating, Santoro and Groff moved to Manhattan, where Groff enrolled in medical school at New York University and Santoro worked as an investment associate for Silver Point, a hedge fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut. On Saturday morning, they traveled to an airport in White Plains, a suburb of New York City, where they boarded Michael Groff's private plane, according to John Santoro. They were set to land at the Columbia County Airport, but crashed roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the south. 'It's in the middle of a field and it's pretty muddy, so accessibility is difficult,' Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore said at a news conference Saturday. The National Transportation Safety Board has begun an investigation and is expected to provide an update Sunday evening. Funeral arrangements were underway, Santoro said. 'The 25 years we had with James were the best years of our lives,' he added, 'and the joy and love he brought us will be enough to last a lifetime.'
