AIFF Technical Committee To Shortlist National Team Coach From 170 Applicants
Last Updated: The AIFF's technical committee, led by IM Vijayan, will meet to appoint a new head coach for the senior men's team after Manolo Marquez's exit. The All India Football Federation's (AIFF) technical committee, led by former India captain IM Vijayan, will meet on Wednesday to begin the process of appointing a new head coach for the senior men's national team. The post became vacant earlier this month after the AIFF and Spaniard Manolo Marquez parted ways by mutual consent following a string of poor performances. Selection Process Underway Following the coaching vacancy, the AIFF invited applications with a deadline of July 13. The federation has since received an overwhelming 170 applications from around the globe. According to a source close to the proceedings, the technical committee will evaluate all applications and create a shortlist to be forwarded to the AIFF Executive Committee (EC), which will make the final decision. With a FIFA international window in September and crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore set for October 9 and 14, the AIFF is under pressure to expedite the appointment. The Executive Committee also has the authority to request additional names or further clarification before making a decision. Several high-profile names have expressed interest in the job. Former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler—who previously coached East Bengal—and Harry Kewell are among the applicants, as is Peter Segrt, who has managed Tajikistan, Maldives, and Afghanistan. Stephen Constantine, who coached India in two separate stints (2002–2005 and 2015–2019), is also in the fray. Most recently in charge of Pakistan, the 62-year-old has also coached East Bengal and national teams like Nepal, Malawi, and Rwanda. Among Indian contenders are Khalid Jamil, Santosh Kashyap, and Sanjoy Sen—the latter fresh off leading Bengal to a Santosh Trophy win and having won the I-League with Mohun Bagan in 2014–15. Other Notable Applicants Foreign coaches with ISL and I-League experience have also applied, including: Vacancy Opened After Marquez's Exit The AIFF officially opened applications on July 4, two days after accepting Manolo Marquez's resignation during its Executive Committee meeting on July 2. Though Marquez had expressed his desire to step down in April, he was requested to stay on until India's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong on June 10. India lost that match 1-0, concluding Marquez's one-year tenure with a disappointing record—no competitive wins in eight games and just one victory in a friendly. Under his leadership, India also fell to 133rd in the FIFA rankings. (with PTI inputs) First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Robbie Fowler, Stephen Constantine Big Names In Applicants List For India Head Coach's Job
Last Updated: Robbie Fowler and Stephen Constantine have applied for the Indian men's football team head coach position, vacated by Manolo Marquez. Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler and former coach Stephen Constantine have applied for the position of the Indian men's football team head coach, which was vacated by Manolo Marquez earlier this month, with Indian football undergoing a massive upheaval. Constantine and Fowler are among 170 candidates who have responded to the advertisement issued by AIFF earlier this month to seek a replacement for Marquez. Fowler has also coached East Bengal from 2020-21. Constantine, 62, has been in charge of India twice before, from 2002-05 and again from 2015 to the Asian Cup in 2019. He managed East Bengal in the 2022-23 season of the Indian Super League as well. Constantine's last game with Pakistan was the 0-1 loss to Myanmar on June 10, ending a stint that started in September 2023 with one victory, one draw and eight losses. There is an international window in September, but if India skip that, their next assignment will be the Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore on October 9 and 14. Former Australia and Liverpool forward Harry Kewell, whose last coaching assignment was with Yokohama F Marinos last year, has applied, as have at least three coaches in the recent Indian Super League, as per a report in The Hindustan Times. Jamshedpur FC coach Khalid Jamil, Sergio Lobera and Andrey Chernyshov have also applied. Lobera has won the Indian Super League double with Mumbai City and the Super Cup with FC Goa but missed out on a top-six berth last term. Jamil, 48, took Jamshedpur FC to the semis this year, where they lost 2-3 on aggregate to double winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant. 'Things changed when the senior team's job offer opened up. It is unlikely that there would be any national team player whom Khalid does not know well," the source told The Hindustan Times. Sanjoy Sen, who won the Santosh Trophy with Bengal and the I League with Mohun Bagan in 2015, is on the list as well. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Shivarajan, part of Vasco SC's Golden Era, dies at 81
C M Shivarajan (extreme left, middle row), joined Vasco in 1965 Panaji: C M Shivarajan, an influential member of Vasco Sports Club's Golden Era that conquered almost everything that crossed their path in the late sixties and seventies, died in Mangaluru on Friday. He was 81 and is survived by his wife Asha. Popularly known as Shivraj, the defender joined Vasco in 1965 after impressing everyone with SN College, Kannur, and Lucky Star. The defender had offers from Kerala-based clubs, including Titanium, but those who knew him well said he chose Vasco due to the influence of OK Sathyan, his former Kannur Lucky Star who had already made the move to the port town. During his time at the club from 1965 to 1974, Vasco were a champion side and won plenty of trophies. They made it twice to the final of the Rovers Cup, a prestigious fixture in Indian football's calendar at the time. Vasco lost both finals, against Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan. In his debut year, Shivarajan won the Senior Division League title and Vasco secured an invitation to participate in the IFA Shield in Kolkata, where they surprised Leaders Club from Jalandhar in the pre-quarterfinals. Shivarajan's best, though, came during Vasco's tour of Kerala where they tasted big success, winning tournaments like the Nehru Trophy, Kerala Football Association Trophy, Mappen Mapillai Memorial Trophy, Sait Nagjee and Chakola Gold Cup. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing Older Women should Avoid Learn More Undo At home, besides the league title, Vasco won everything on offer, which included the Taca Goa, Police Cup and Bandodkar Gold Trophy. 'Shivraj was a gentleman, both on and off the field,' said Peter Valles, who shared the dressing room with him. 'When I joined the club (in 1973) as a junior, I was fielded at right back in Shivraj's place and he was naturally disappointed. I apologised to him after the game but, rather than sulking, he hugged me and passed on encouraging words, which I could never forget.' Shivarajan represented Goa at the 1969 Santosh Trophy in Nowgong, where five other Vasco players -- Arvinder Singh, George Ambrose, George Rosemond, Catao Fernandes and Dominic Soares – were also selected. He was also part of the state squad in 1973. After his retirement, Shivarajan took over as president and later secretary of Kannur District Football Association and was Kerala's selector for the Santosh Trophy, handpicking the side that became champions in 1992 and 1993.

West Bengal Assembly passes Bill for private university focused on sports and entrepreneurship
KOLKATA: West Bengal Education Minister on Monday advocated the need for collaboration between government and private sectors to boost education and sports. Speaking in the Assembly about the Netaji Subhas University of Sports and Entrepreneurship Bill, 2025, which was tabled on Friday, Basu highlighted the state's continued efforts to support athletes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He asserted that the state government has been promoting sportspersons who had brought laurels to the nation by giving them jobs and honouring them in public. "The state and private sector should work hand-in-hand for the promotion of sports," Basu said, adding that the proposed university, which is proposed to be set up proposes setting up in Chinsurah, Hooghly district, is the first-of-its-kind in the private sector. Taking a swipe at the Raj Bhavan, Basu expressed concern over delays in gubernatorial assent to state legislation. "Three Bills are lying in the cold storage despite being passed by the House. Don't know what awaits this Bill. If the Centre wishes the sports sector and sports education to grow here (in Bengal), they should ensure that this Bill gets the nod of Raj Bhavan," he said. On the reason for establishing the university at Chinsurah in Hooghly district, Basu said, "If budding sportspersons are spotted by individual initiatives, the state can back it up. Remember, those who brought glory in the Santosh Trophy were not just given jobs, but also allowances and scholarships. Bengal is among the front-runners in sports, thanks to the Chief Minister's proactive initiatives." Recalling Bengal's footballers who created ripples in national and international levels in the 70s-80s, he said, "We have to reach to the global level. Such universities can be the step in the right direction." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to the Bill, the university will focus on creating a talent pool of sports professionals, technical experts, and coaches. It will offer world-class infrastructure and academic programmes in physical education, sports science, technology, management, coaching, and sports law - including Olympic-level and traditional tribal games. It will also collaborate with other national and international colleges or universities, industry associations in India and abroad, the proposals read. While the main campus is slated to be at Chinsurah in Hooghly district, there will be study centres, off-shore campuses, off-campus centres and regional centres at different places. The varsity is promoted by the Chinsurah Netaji Welfare Trust and the state will have no financial liability. The Bill was later passed by voice vote with the entire BJP legislators staging walkout as discussion began. Taking a dig at the opposition, Basu said, "They don't have time to discuss a sports university bill-they're too busy fighting with assembly security and breaking microphones."

Bhaichung Bhutia Blasts Kalyan Chaubey For Turning AIFF Into 'Circus', Top Official Responds
Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia on Friday made a scathing attack on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) leadership, calling the current administration under president Kalyan Chaubey a "circus" riddled with all-round mismanagement. Chaubey hit back through an official statement, dismissing the allegations as 'baseless' and accusing Bhutia of 'deliberately distorting the image of AIFF'. In a no-holds-barred press conference, Bhutia said Indian football has been experiencing one of the worst phases in recent history -- both in performance and credibility -- under the stewardship of Chaubey. 'The AIFF today is a circus. And when you put jokers in those positions, it's bound to become a circus,' Bhutia said, pointing to the federation's inability to resolve the I-League championship impasse between Inter Kashi and Churchill Brothers. The fate of the I-League title hinges on a Court of Arbitration for Sport's verdict on the appeal filed by Inter Kashi against a decision of the AIFF's Appeals Committee. 'They (AIFF) should have made a clear decision when the controversy erupted. Instead, they let the league continue in confusion. Clubs were treated unfairly. It's embarrassing for Indian football,' said Bhutia. Bhutia repeated his earlier criticism of Chaubey's decision to withdraw India's bid to host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, leaving Saudi Arabia the sole candidate in the fray. "Why did we suddenly withdraw our 2027 AFC Asian Cup bid and agree to host the Santosh Trophy in Saudi Arabia instead? This has to be investigated by someone neutral,' said Bhutia, alleging "financial misuse" by the AIFF president. Chaubey has now expressed India's interest in bidding for the 2031 edition of the AFC Asian Cup. 'When we had the best chance, we gave it away. Now we're looking at 2031 where seven countries, including World Cup-qualified Uzbekistan, are interested. It makes no sense,' said the legendary striker. Dismissing Bhutia's allegations, Chaubey said, 'As a member of the (AIFF) Executive Committee, Mr. Bhutia has access to appropriate and empowered platforms to express his views. 'However, since his defeat in September 2022 (AIFF president's election), he has consistently and deliberately made baseless allegations and presented a distorted image of the AIFF. These actions tarnish the federation's reputation and Indian football internationally.' Chaubey invited Bhutia to the upcoming AIFF Executive Committee meeting on July 2, saying he can raise his concerns and suggestions there. 'He is most welcome to present any constructive proposals, which will be duly deliberated upon in the spirit of transparency, collaboration, and collective development of Indian football,' Chaubey said in an AIFF statement. PTI 'Not interested in contesting AIFF elections if there's govt interference' =========================================== Bhutia, who lost a lopsided election for the AIFF president against Chaubey in 2022, said he's not keen on contesting polls again if there is interference from the government. "If there is interference from the government and other various things, then I don't think I would want to get into fighting an election for the AIFF president. "But yes, if everybody feels that I can do a job, I am okay with it... If somebody is going to sincerely do good for Indian football, I am more than happy to support." On whether sports and politics can mix, he said: "Ideally, it's not bad. We've seen politicians like Mr (Priyaranjan) Das Munshi and Praful Patel do a decent job. But because of Kalyan, now all sportspersons are being tagged badly." Bhutia further criticised Manolo Marquez's earlier dual role (both FC Goa and India coach) and highlighted the lack of planning and clarity on the part of the AIFF. "We should have sat with Manolo Marquez and asked him to choose -- either FC Goa or India. Or wait for six months. There was no plan. No meeting of the technical committee. "I don't mind Indian coaches, but for grassroots and long-term development, we need experts from Portugal, Spain... Those who've worked in academy systems." He also took potshots at AIFF's handling of the negotiations with Indian Super League organisers FSDL regarding the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) which ends in December.
