Colorado Dragon Boat Festival may need new home as Sloan's Lake health deteriorates
The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival may be looking for a new home, but not by choice. The last couple of years at Sloan's Lake have brought small challenges, from fish kills to upticks in blue-green algae in the heat of the summer. Now, the Denver Parks & Recreation Department has closed off the lake for public use between July and August, forcing the Festival to move to September. If things get much worse, it may mean one of the area's most popular weekends may be no more. "Within my move, I came out here and was really looking and searching for the Asian community, and the way I found that was through the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival," said Sara Moore, the executive director of the festival. She, like many, was once a Colorado transplant but found a circle of community through the Festival. Now, she runs the entire operation and is hoping that the city and county take the lake's health seriously. "I do think there's obviously been a decrease of activity on the league just due to the health deteriorating," she said. On average, the Colorado Dragon Boat festival sees roughly 200,000 people flock to the Edgewater area over the course of the weekend. Not wanting to leave Sloan's Lake behind, Moore has gotten together with other advocates, like Kurt Weaver of the Sloan's Lake Foundation, to see what can be done. "It's not going to be next year that the lake is no longer here, but certainly it is in the next several years that we're going to see real bad impacts on the lake," Weaver said. Earlier in the year, a proposal to clean and dredge the lake was brought to the city as part of the Vibrant Denver Bond proposal package. The proposed $40 million would include habitat restoration, full dredging of the lake, filtration of storm drains as well as general improvements to make Sloan's a destination again. That $40 million is now just $5 million in the current iteration of the bond package, which still has to go to a city council vote and, if it passes, be approved by voters in November. "The five million dollars that is tagged for environmental and aquatic improvements are some of the pre-hab things we need to do before we dredge the lake," Weaver explained. Some of that work includes fixing shorelines and adding filters to the 23 area storm drains and two run-off ditches. Much of the sediment that pollutes the lake comes from those areas as Sloan's maintains its water levels via runoff and rainwater. Moore, preparing for another festival in September, knows the significance of the lake and those who use it. What she's hoping for is that the move of the festival dates will raise awareness for the community to rally around the lake and show that it's worth saving. "Especially for the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, we don't want to leave the city and county of Denver, and we don't want to leave Sloan's Lake," she said. The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival will be happening on September 6th and 7th.

Lorry driver, 37, who was set to pocket €25,000 for smuggling a woman and six-year-old child into the UK is jailed
A 37-year-old lorry driver, who was set to pocket €25,000 for smuggling a six-year-old girl into the UK, has been jailed. Polish national Dawid Flis, 37, was arrested by the National Crime Agency after arriving into the Port of Killingholme in North Lincolnshire in his HGV on March 23. He had travelled from the Hook of Holland, a village in the Netherlands, with an Albanian woman and a child hidden in the bunk area of the driver's cab. After the lorry was searched by Border Force, the two were found, with the woman later telling investigators she had agreed to pay Flis €25,000 to be brought to the UK. She revealed they had arranged to meet at the roadside in Holland, where he had let them both into the cab. The woman had already paid €12,500 to date On June 20, Flis pleaded guilty to facilitating illegal immigration at Grimsby Crown Court. Today, he was sentenced at the same court to four years in prison, and will be deported after his time behind bars. NCA Branch Commander Sara Moore said: 'Dawid Flis abused his position as a lorry driver to attempt to smuggle a woman and child into the UK. 'Tackling organised immigration crime is a priority for the NCA and we will continue in our pursuit of individuals who are involved in this criminality at every step of the chain.' Sixth in world is 'incredible' for Welsh Feathers
Head of performance Sara Moore says reaching number six in the world for the first time is "an incredible milestone for Wales Netball".The Welsh Feathers' highest ever world ranking follows an undefeated 2024-2025 campaign."To achieve the highest ranking in our history is a testament to the hard work, commitment and talent of our players, coaches, and staff," added Moore. "I am confident that we will continue to build on this success and I will be working closely with [coach] Emily Handyside and the team as we head towards the Netball World Cup in 2027, to ensure that the Welsh Feathers remain among the best in the world."There is no change to the top five in the rankings which are led by Australia, followed by New Zealand, Jamaica and with a rating of 124, are 39 points behind fifth-placed South Africa and two points ahead of Uganda. Wales Netball chief executive Sarah Boswell has called for more funding to maintain their progress."Wales Netball's rise from ninth to sixth in the world rankings is proof of what can be achieved with dedication and talent, but to sustain and build on this success, investment is critical," said Boswell."In 2025, I want to see a real acceleration in investment - financial, structural, and cultural - into the game. With three huge years ahead, the Youth World Cup in Gibraltar in 2025, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2026, and the World Cup in Australia in 2027, now is the time to back Wales Netball. "This isn't just about funding the game, it's about strengthening the entire ecosystem: coaching pathways, media representation, commercial opportunities, and grassroots development. "Women's sport isn't an add-on, it's a powerhouse deserving of real, long-term commitment."
