Greenville bakery needs your help to feed kids over summer break
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA)- Here's one way you can help feed hungry children when school is out in an Upstate community.
Loaves and Fishes is a Greenville food rescue nonprofit that takes food for free from restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses that have extra food. They transport it on their four refrigerated trucks, seven days a week, to more than 100 agencies that provide food to people.
Marketing and Communications Manager Daneen Schatzle said South Carolina is one of 12 states that opted out of the federally funded Summer EBT program. This means that families with resources have a harder time feeding their children over the summer.
Local bakery Travelers Baking Company heard about this issue and is donating bread from their bakery to help agencies that feed children make sandwiches.
Sara Tamling at Travelers Baking Company said 12 sandwiches can be made with one loaf, and the bakery asks that the public buy a loaf for $10, and they will match the purchase.
Tamling said that means 24 loaves can be made with other ingredients donated by Harris Teeter, like meat and dairy.
Loaves and Fishes will bring it specifically to our agencies, which are feeding primarily children and families.
