'I've read hundreds of books — this is easily my favourite fantasy novel of the year so far'
Whatever your favourite genre, it's hard to argue with the fact that fantasy, or to be more specific, romantasy, is the genre of the moment. I really got back into reading last year and, like many others, I largely have romantasy books to thank for that. They're so readable and with a seemingly endless supply of fantastical worlds ready to step into, you'll never be short of ideas on what to read next. But over time, the problem for me has been I feel like a lot of people have seen the huge successes of popular books like Sarah J. Maas' A Court of Thorns and Roses and Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing, and just decided to just give us more of the same. Think BookTok -friendly stories, full of copy-paste love interests and a selection of the classic tropes thrown in for good measure. But I'm pleased to report that after months and months spent trying to find my next five-star fantasy, I've finally done it. Enter: Silvercloak by L. K. Steven. Silvercloak is the debut adult novel from the acclaimed author behind young adult books like Our Infinite Fates and Society for Soulless Girls. It follows Saffron, an obsessive detective who is forced to go undercover to infiltrate a brutal underground mafia of dark magicians after her biggest secret is exposed on the eve of her graduation from the elite Silvercloak Academy. In a world where magic is fuelled by pleasure and pain, Saff must contend with curious prophecies, rival gangs and the rather inconvenient problem of her growing feelings for the kingpin's tortured son. I really enjoyed Our Infinite Fates when I first read it earlier this year, so I went into Silvercloak feeling optimistic. But this book absolutely blew me away; I was hooked from the very first chapter. The world of Ascenfall feels truly original and the romance in this book is also a breath of fresh air. As anyone who read Our Infinite Fates will already know, Steven is a master of the enemies to friends to lovers to enemies dynamic, and Saff and Levan's relationship, from its beginning to its prophesised end and beyond, is such a highlight of this book. I'm a bit of a chaotic reader and tend to always have a physical book or two on the go at the same time as well as an audiobook for when I'm cooking or walking my dog. I found it impossible to put Silvercloak down, however, even purchasing the audiobook so I could go between the two. I was fully immersed in the story all the way through to the final page, and cannot wait to see where the series goes next. If you're going to read one fantasy novel this summer, make it this one. You can buy Silvercloak now from Waterstones. Alternatively, you can order your copy from Amazon.

Major franchise development in the works for A Court of Thorns and Roses series
The #Booktok favourite author of hit series ACOTAR, Throne of Glass and Crescent City has just signed this historic merch deal, suggesting the full franchise treatment of Harry Potter Sarah J. Maas' A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) universe continues to expand, this time with a franchise development. Ahead of the sixth ACOTAR instalment, rumours of filming have started to bubble as new products are set to release. The viral Romantasy sensation that has taken #Booktok by storm is set to receive the full franchise treatment, with a worldwide exclusive deal with IMG Licensing, promising fans a vast selection of merchandise, spanning across all of her literary series - Throne of Glass and Crescent City included. Her global success boasts more than 70 million English copies sold worldwide, with translations of her work in 38 languages. Dubbed one of the most influential modern authors, Maas has acted as the literary knight leading the charge for Romantasy, now an established genre in its own right. The Hollywood Reporter wrote how the multi-year deal will both manage and develop a huge licensing program to create interaction points for the loyal fantasy base of Terasen, the Night Court and Crescent City. Maas' adored literary-verse will extend from its pages, transforming into clothing attire; makeup; lifestyle and homeware products; wine and spirits; food and beverages; toys and games; collectibles; cosplay items; and immersive fan experiences, reports THR. IMG Licensing Vice President, Samantha Chang, commented on the exciting deal, saying: "Representing Sarah J. Maas and her extraordinary literary worlds is an incredible honour. Together, Sarah and her fans have created a cultural phenomenon that has redefined fantasy fiction". She added that the company are "excited to launch a dynamic and carefully curated licensing program that offers fans meaningful new ways to celebrate the characters and stories they love". Fore fronting every aisle of its genre in bookshops, Maas' Romantasy has helped inspire a new theme of independent businesses - genre-specific stores. England's first Romance specific store, Saucy Books, now open in Notting Hill, London. Sarah Maxwell, founder of Saucy Books, explained: "The numbers don't lie — romance is consistently one of the highest-grossing genres and the most passionately discussed online. Readers are clearly craving connection. But for all that energy, there's been no dedicated physical space in England to gather, celebrate, and explore the genre together. "As an American expat, I've been watching the rise of romance bookstores globally and felt it was time to bring the concept to London — a city with a rich literary history and a passionate romance readership. That's why I'm so excited to launch Saucy Books: a space to turn that love into something real, rooted, and wildly fun. I think Jane Austen would approve."

‘A Court of Thorns and Roses' TV adaptation officially canceled at Hulu & 20th Television
Hulu and 20th Television have officially scrapped their planned adaptation of Sarah J. Maas' fantasy book series A Court of Thorns and Roses . The project, initially developed by Outlander creator Ron Moore, had been in development for four years but will no longer move forward. Rumors of the series' cancellation began circulating in early 2024, gaining traction after Moore left 20th Television for Sony Pictures Television. Despite speculation that another writer might take over, Hulu and 20th TV ultimately decided to drop the adaptation. The cancellation has sparked strong reactions from fans, with many expressing disappointment over the wasted years of development. Some called it a 'missed opportunity,' believing the series could have been a massive success given the book's dedicated fanbase on TikTok. Others were relieved, arguing that a rushed or poorly executed adaptation could have done more harm than good to the beloved fantasy world. Several fans now hope that another streaming service, such as Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, will take over the rights and do the story justice. The series was intended to be Hulu's first fantasy project, competing with Disney+ titles like Percy Jackson and the Olympians . Based on Maas' bestselling novels, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a loose Beauty and the Beast retelling, mixing romance, adventure, and political intrigue. The book series, which debuted in 2015, has gained a massive fan following, spanning five installments, with A Court of Silver Flames being the latest release in 2021. While Hulu has pulled out, the IP remains valuable, leaving the door open for another network or streamer to revive the project.
