Recreation facilities include ball fields, a concession stand, a playground, picnic areas, restrooms, and a visitors' center. Dorchester man charged with assault after striking Boston police officer while riding a moped downtown, police say

'The Boston Police Department is continuing its efforts to address unsafe and unlawful operation of mopeds and scooters in the downtown area,' the statement said. Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday, officers observed a moped traveling in the wrong direction on Washington Street in the Downtown Crossing area, police said. Advertisement The moped driver came a stop near Bromfield Street at which point police attempted to stop the vehicle, according to police. As officers approached, Howard suddenly accelerated the moped and turned left onto Franklin Street in the direction of one of the officers, police said. The moped collided with the officer, throwing them back, police said. After the collision, the moped crashed into a nearby pole, shattering debris across Franklin Street, police said. Following the crash, Howard ran from police but was ultimately detained with assistance from a bystander, police said. 'During the arrest, Howard actively resisted officers' attempts to place him in custody, creating a disturbance in the area,' the police statement stated. A crowd formed during the arrest as Howard made threats to shoot officers, police said. Advertisement In addition to facing criminal charges, Howard was issued several Massachusetts Uniform Citations for criminal and civil motor vehicle violations, including failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, helmet violation, improper operation of a motor vehicle, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, police said.
