Alabama and Maryland's March Madness double-OT thriller inspired elite memes

On Monday, No. 5 seed Alabama and No. 4 seed Maryland had a game for the ages. Not to be dramatic, but the second-round March Madness matchup between the Crimson Tide and the Terrapins was easily the best game of the women's NCAA tournament thus far. Maryland was down 17 points in the third quarter and came roaring back. With two minutes left in regulation, Alabama was up by 4 when Maryland continued pushing, eventually tying the game at 80 all. Alabama senior Sarah Ashlee Barker, who had a sensational 45-point day, launched a gutsy 3-pointer, putting the Tide up ― only to have the Terps answer right back, pushing the game into the first overtime. Maryland had all the momentum in extra time, nearly taking Alabama to the brink of elimination. But Barker was fouled on a 3-point attempt just seconds before time expired. She drained all three free throws and sent the game to double-overtime. Maryland's Sarah Te-Biasu (and guard Shyanne Sellers) continued trading buckets with Barker, elevating the matchup to instant classic status as it inched toward a third overtime. Perhaps it was the mercy of the basketball gods who knew the players and everyone watching wouldn't last much longer. A deflection promptly ended the game, sending Maryland to the Sweet 16. March is becoming Maryland's month

For the first time in school history, the Terps men's and women's basketball teams have both made the Sweet 16. Why it matters: Just three other schools pulled that off this year — Duke, Tennessee and Ole Miss. More than a decade after joining the Big Ten, it's a sign that Maryland is finally becoming one of the conference's basketball powerhouses. The latest: The women's team came back to win one of the best games of the tournament so far, a 111-108 double-overtime victory over Alabama on Monday. The Terps were down 17 at one point, but senior guards Sarah Te-Biasu and Shyanne Sellers each scored more than 25 to help complete the upset. The program has now made the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in five years, per ESPN. Meanwhile, the men's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016 after center Derik Queen nailed a tough jumper at the buzzer to beat Colorado State on Sunday. The fearless freshman averages 16 points and nine rebounds per game and is quickly becoming one of the darlings of this year's tournament. When asked after the game where his confidence comes from, Queen said: "I'm from Baltimore, that's why." What's next: Both teams now have to face vaunted No. 1 seeds that will be difficult tests.

Maryland overcomes 45 points by Alabama's Barker, beats Crimson Tide 111-108 in 2 OTs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It's a line that dates back about two decades, to Maryland's 2006 run to the national title. 'Overtime is our time,' coach Brenda Frese said. The Terrapins pulled off another extra-period escape Monday, outlasting Alabama 111-108 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Sarah Te-Biasu made a tying 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter, then scored eight of her 26 points in the second OT to help fourth-seeded Maryland advance to the Sweet 16.
