Alabama and Maryland's March Madness double-OT thriller inspired elite memes

Yahoo25-03-2025

On Monday, No. 5 seed Alabama and No. 4 seed Maryland had a game for the ages.
Not to be dramatic, but the second-round March Madness matchup between the Crimson Tide and the Terrapins was easily the best game of the women's NCAA tournament thus far. Maryland was down 17 points in the third quarter and came roaring back. With two minutes left in regulation, Alabama was up by 4 when Maryland continued pushing, eventually tying the game at 80 all. Alabama senior Sarah Ashlee Barker, who had a sensational 45-point day, launched a gutsy 3-pointer, putting the Tide up ― only to have the Terps answer right back, pushing the game into the first overtime.
Maryland had all the momentum in extra time, nearly taking Alabama to the brink of elimination. But Barker was fouled on a 3-point attempt just seconds before time expired. She drained all three free throws and sent the game to double-overtime. Maryland's Sarah Te-Biasu (and guard Shyanne Sellers) continued trading buckets with Barker, elevating the matchup to instant classic status as it inched toward a third overtime. Perhaps it was the mercy of the basketball gods who knew the players and everyone watching wouldn't last much longer.
A deflection promptly ended the game, sending Maryland to the Sweet 16. (*dramatically gasps*)

CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that Brad Brownell's Tigers will take on coach Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa in the 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge. An official date and start time were not announced. The matchup will be a rematch of teams who met twice during the 2023-24 season, including in the West Region final of NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles on March 30, 2024. After defeating New Mexico, No. 3 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed Arizona in the tournament, the Tigers reached the Elite Eight for only the second time in program history, and the first since 1980. Clemson fell to Alabama, 89-82, at Arena (Staples Center), denying the Tigers their first trip to a Final Four. Prior to that, Clemson and Alabama met four months earlier on Nov. 28 in Tuscaloosa, an 85-77 Tigers victory in the 2023 ACC/SEC Challenge. Last year, Clemson smothered No. 4 Kentucky in the ACC/SEC Challenge for a 70-66 win at Littlejohn Coliseum on Dec. 3 behind 11 points and 20 rebounds from Ian Schieffelin. Guard Jaeden Zackery led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, and fans stormed the court after the victory. Clemson finished 27-7 overall last season and 18-2 in ACC play and was a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to McNeese State, 69-67, in a first-round upset in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Alabama went 28-9 overall and reached the Elite Eight before falling to Duke in the East Region final in Newark. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 6 in the final Coaches Poll. What FIFA said about ICE operations at Club World Cup matches

The FIFA Club World Cup is set to kick off at a time when the U.S. is actively deploying military personnel to confront protestors and assist in immigration enforcement. It's the kind of situation that reasonably would have fans wary about attending the event. And it will be impossible to ignore as ICE and CBP agents will have a presence at the actual Club World Cup venues. According to NBC Miami, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that ICE agents will be at Hard Rock Stadium for Saturday's opener. Though the department claimed it would be there to provide additional security, ICE did include an ominous reminder "that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status." FIFA president Gianni Infantino was asked about the prospect of ICE agents carrying out immigration operations at Club World Cup matches, and Infantino did not see a problem with it — emphasizing the need for security. He said: "No, I don't have any concerns about anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security question. Of course, the most important for us is to guarantee security for all the fans who come to the games. This is our priority. This is the priority of all the authorities who are here. And we want everyone who comes to the games to pass a good moment." He also added that he didn't want anyone to come to the games and create problems. Hard Rock Stadium was notably the scene of the ugly situation at the 2024 Copa America final where fans breached gates for Argentina's win over Colombia. Police and stadium personnel were so overwhelmed that they stopped checking tickets and ultimately closed the gates. Infantino wants to avoid that situation, sure, but immigration enforcement at the stadium doesn't work towards that goal. Alabama's opponent for 2025 SEC-ACC Basketball Challenge revealed

Alabama's opponent for 2025 SEC-ACC Basketball Challenge revealed Alabama basketball has reportedly learned its opponent for the annual SEC-ACC Challenge. CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that Nate Oats' Crimson Tide will take on coach Brad Brownell and the Clemson Tigers at Coleman Coliseum in the 2025 SEC-ACC Challenge. An official date and start time were not announced. The matchup between Alabama and Clemson will be a rematch of teams who met twice during the 2023-24 season, most notably in the West Region final of the Elite Eight in Los Angeles. The Crimson Tide punched their first-ever ticket to the Final Four with an 89-82 win over the Tigers at Arena (Staples Center) on March 30, 2024. Alabama made 16 3-pointers in the victory, getting a game-high 23 points from Mark Sears, who made 7-of-14 shots from beyond the arc, and 19 points off the bench from Jarin Stevenson. Alabama and Clemson previously met in the 2023-24 regular season on Nov. 28 in Coleman Coliseum, an 85-77 Tigers victory in that year's SEC-ACC Challenge. One of Tigers' star players from their 2024 run to the Elite Eight, forward Ian Schieffelin, recently joined Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football team as a tight end. Last year, Alabama defeated North Carolina in the SEC-ACC Challenge, 94-79 in Chapel Hill behind 20 points from Sears and 15 apiece from Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway. Philon recently announced his decision to withdraw from the 2025 NBA draft and return to Tuscaloosa for his sophomore season. As part of their 2024-25 schedule, the Crimson Tide will also face Illinois in Chicago, Purdue at Coleman Coliseum, Rick Pitino's St. John's Red Storm at Madison Square Garden, and the Arizona Wildcats at Legacy Arena in Birmingham among other nonconference foes. Alabama finished 28-9 last season and reached the Elite Eight before falling to Duke in the East Region final in Newark. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 6 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Clemson went 27-7 overall and 18-2 in ACC play and was a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to McNeese State, 69-67, in a first-round upset in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the final Coaches Poll. Contact/Follow us @RollTideWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Alabama news, notes and opinions.
