"I was concerned that the upcoming generation might not learn to interpret Tamil manuscripts. So, I started classes under the name 'Eadagam' to enlighten them about interpreting Tamil palm leaf manuscripts and to understand ancient knowledge," Maran told TOI. The scholar has been working in the Tamil Manuscript department of Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur for around 25 years. Maran has a doctorate in the subject 'Water Management in Ancient Tamil Literature' from Bharathidasan University. He has been collecting, researching, preserving, and digitising ancient manuscripts on history, science, astrology, medicine, and literature. On Sunday, Maran was taken by surprise as the Prime Minister spoke about him in 'Mann Ki Baat'. Modi called Maran an inspirational personality who has taken the responsibility of preserving extraordinary knowledge. "If such efforts are made across the country, our ancient knowledge will not remain confined within walls; it will become a part of the consciousness of the new generation," he said. Modi cited a govt initiative called 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' in this year's budget, under which ancient manuscripts would be digitised. PM Modi praises Mani Maran for preserving ancient manuscripts, Tamil pundit calls it 'fulfilling experience'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, praised the efforts of Mani Maran, the Tamilian pundit of Saraswathi Mahal Library, who has been doing commendable work in preserving ancient manuscripts. The library has published as many as 20 books, penned by him. Addressing the monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday, PM Modi said that Maran's initiative reflects how individuals can contribute to protecting India's intellectual and cultural heritage. Mani Maran, Tamil pundit of Saraswathi Mahal Library, spoke to IANS after PM Modi's appreciation and called it a "fulfilling experience". "I'm not sure how the Prime Minister came to know about me, but it's fulfilling to be recognised. I've always believed that my hard work would one day be acknowledged. I'm grateful to the Prime Minister for the appreciation," he said. Sharing his first reaction on being named by PM Modi in his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, the Tamilian scholar said that he was thrilled about the development and also elaborated on his extensive research and training sessions for students on manuscripts. "I'm thrilled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned me in today's 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, which I never expected. For years, I've been working on research in archaeology, history, and manuscriptology, bringing out related information, and training students. Our library has been instrumental in this endeavour. Currently, I'm conducting evening classes where I teach students about Tamil manuscripts. He further said that the information in manuscripts is a treasure trove of Tamil heritage, containing medical notes, historical facts, and technological information. "We have over 2.5 million manuscripts, and there's still much to be uncovered. As a single individual, it's impossible for me to study and publish all of it. That's why I'm training students to read manuscripts, so they can contribute to this field," he informed. He also underlined the need for bringing a level playing field in the sector. "The number of students interested in learning this is limited due to limited job opportunities. If we offer better pay and job prospects, more students would be interested. Over 30 students trained by me are working in various places, but their pay is not comparable to what's offered in the IT sector. If the remuneration were better, more students would be willing to learn," he stated. PM Modi, taking note of his sincere endeavour, in the radio address, highlighted how his students have not only become proficient in reading the texts but have also begun research into traditional medicine based on them. PM Modi underlined the importance of preserving such texts, calling them "chapters of the soul of India" that must be passed on to future generations.

PM Modi praises Mani Maran of Saraswathi Mahal Library for preserving ancient manuscripts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, commended the efforts of Mani Maran, the Tamil Pundit of the Saraswathi Mahal Library, to preserve ancient manuscripts. The Saraswathi Mahal Library has published 20 books written by him. He is also conducting research on a Monograph of the Sendalai Temple. In his message through Mann Ki Baat on All India Radio (AIR), Mr Modi said while the foundation of Bharat's culture lies in our festivals and traditions, another vibrant aspect of culture was the continued documentation of the present and history. 'These manuscripts hold science, medical systems, music, philosophy, and, most importantly, a vision that can illuminate the future of humanity. Friends, it is our collective responsibility to preserve this extraordinary wisdom and heritage,' he said. Mr Modi said in every era of the country, there have been people who have dedicated their lives to this cause, and one such inspiring personality was Manimaran from Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur. 'He felt that if today's generation does not learn to read Tamil manuscripts, then this priceless heritage might be lost in the future. So, he started evening classes where students, working professionals, and researchers all came to learn,' Mr Modi said in the message broadcast. Manimaran taught people how to read and understand Tamil Suvadiyial, that is, palm-leaf manuscripts. 'Today, thanks to many efforts, many students have become proficient in this art. Some students have even started researching traditional medicine systems based on these manuscripts. Friends, imagine if such efforts happened across the country — then our ancient wisdom wouldn't remain confined within walls. It would become a part of the new generation's consciousness,' he said. He also recalled that the Gyan Bharatam Mission, announced in the Budget this year, was inspired by this very idea. Under this mission, ancient manuscripts will be digitised. Then, a national digital repository will be created where students and researchers worldwide can connect with Bharat's rich knowledge tradition. 'I urge you all, if you are involved in or want to join such efforts, please reach out to MyGov or the Ministry of Culture, because these are not just manuscripts. They are chapters of Bharat's soul that we must pass on to future generations,' he said.

Plea to classify Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur as model library

Madurai: Madras high court on Thursday ordered notice to the Centre and the state on a plea seeking a direction to classify the Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur as a model library under the National Mission on Libraries. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete was hearing a public interest litigation filed by B Prabhakaran of Chennai. The petitioner stated that the 500-year-old library holds immense historical, socio-cultural, and academic significance. The library, also known as Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji's Sarasvati Mahal Library, is one of the oldest surviving libraries in Asia, established in the 16th century during the reign of the Nayak kings of Thanjavur. The library was enriched by Maratha rulers, notably King Serfoji II, an eminent scholar and polyglot. He stated that the library, a historic repository of ancient knowledge, is currently suffering from severe administrative neglect, acute staff shortage, unimplemented digitisation programmes, and lack of preservation efforts by the govt, leading to the loss of valuable books and journals. No effective measures have been taken to ensure the preservation or proper management of the library's invaluable records. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The continued neglect and failure to implement restoration and preservation measures amount to a grave dereliction of public duty and a violation of the collective cultural rights of the people enshrined under Article 29 of the Constitution. The Union ministry of culture exercises administrative supervision over several premier libraries. Saraswathi Mahal Library falls well within the purview of the National Mission on Libraries, which is established under the ministry. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking a direction to classify the library as a model library and to take appropriate steps towards digitisation, conservation, and implement development schemes administered by the ministry by sanctioning requisite grants-in-aid to undertake restoration measures and infrastructural upgrades.
