Serumpun Sarawak debuts cultural gastronomy in Osaka

KUCHING: Serumpun Sarawak has launched its international debut in Osaka, Japan, showcasing Sarawak's cultural gastronomy. The four-day event at Seaside Studio CASO highlighted ancestral heritage through storytelling and culinary innovation. Organised by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the showcase ran from Aug 5 to 8 as part of Sarawak Week at the Malaysia Pavilion. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and other officials attended the opening ceremony. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised that Serumpun Sarawak is more than a cultural display—it reflects Sarawakian identity. He said the initiative fosters global understanding by sharing Sarawak's flavours and indigenous wisdom. The event's highlight was a seven-course degustation dinner by Chef James Won, featuring rainforest ingredients and ancestral techniques. Each course was paired with soundscapes and visuals to immerse guests in Sarawak's edible heritage. STB CEO Sharzede Salleh stated the initiative reintroduces Sarawak's culture through meaningful exchange, not just cuisine. She described it as a showcase of Sarawak's soft power, blending heritage with global inspiration. Professor Gerard Bodeker shared insights on the medicinal benefits of rainforest ingredients used in the dishes. The evening featured the premiere of Ilun Kuai, Serumpun Sarawak's anthem, performed by Zee Avi and collaborators. The song debuted during the 'Sunrise of Sarawak' ritual, encouraging reflection on nature and resilience. The next Serumpun Sarawak chapter will take place in Mulu, home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. - Bernama

KUCHING (Aug 8): Japan remains one of Sarawak's top trading partners, with trade valued at RM31.6 billion in 2024, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He noted that since 2011, Japanese investments in Sarawak's manufacturing sector have reached RM13.8 billion, generating over 4,000 jobs – a reflection of the long-standing strategic partnership between Sarawak and Japan. 'These are more than numbers, they reflect deep trust and shared progress. 'We are committed to strengthening this relationship, especially in digital technology, green hydrogen and ammonia, as well as renewable energy,' he said in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during Sarawak Week at the Malaysia Pavilion during World Expo Osaka 2025 in Japan today. Abang Johari said Sarawak remains committed to strengthening ties with Japan, particularly in digital technology, green hydrogen and ammonia, and renewable energy. He also outlined Sarawak's economic focus on six key pillars – manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, forestry, mining (including oil and gas), and services – driven by innovation, sustainability, and global partnerships. These priorities, he said, align with national strategies such as the 13th Malaysia Plan and the National Investment Policy, positioning Sarawak as a national hub for renewable energy, semiconductors, and aerospace-related economic activities. 'Our clean, reliable, and affordable renewable energy, mainly from hydropower, solar, biomass and waste to energy, positions Sarawak among the most sustainable regions in Southeast Asia. 'We offer a stable political climate, transparent governance, and an investor-friendly environment with robust infrastructure, pro-business policies, and expanding digital, air, and sea connectivity,' he said. Abang Johari added that Sarawak shares core values with Japan, such as discipline, harmony with nature, resilience and determination. 'From Osaka to Kuching, our stories are intertwined,' he said. During the event, a Memorandum of Agreement and five Memoranda of Understanding were signed, covering collaborations in manufacturing, renewable energy, tourism, including the Sarawak-MM2H programme, and bamboo-based forestry ventures. Sarawak Week, which started on 4 August 2025, has attracted many visitors to experience what Sarawak has to offer. Among the showcases include Sarawak's uniqueness through digital display on Sarawak development initiatives, cultural shows and pocket talks on investment, tourism and talent development. Sarawak steps up role in ASEAN Power Grid, expands RE vision

OSAKA: Sarawak is stepping up a plan to integrate Borneo into the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), underlining its commitment to regional energy cooperation, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He said Sarawak has been supplying electricity to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2016 and is currently in the process of supplying power to Brunei. 'We will play our part to contribute to the APG. Sarawak is also actively enhancing its grid infrastructure to strengthen power distribution across the state and beyond,' he said after the opening ceremony of the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, today. Besides renewable energy (RE), Awang Tengah said Sarawak is transforming its industrial landscape through strategic diversification into hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, oil and gas (O&G), petrochemical products, and aerospace. These developments complement the sustainable O&G sector and expansion into high-value petrochemical downstream activities, leveraging advanced technologies and sustainable practices, he said. 'Sarawak is shaping a dynamic economic hub in Southeast Asia, balancing economic growth and environmental responsibility while achieving long-term prosperity,' said Awang Tengah. He said Sarawak is going to be the hub for RE, anchored in hydropower as it has the potential to generate at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) or 30 gigawatts (GW), if fully developed. Currently, Sarawak is targeting an increase in its generating capacity to 10,000 MW or 10 GW by 2030, and to 15,000 MW or 15 GW by 2035. 'Apart from hydropower potential, there is also huge potential for us to develop this RE through solar power and bio-energy from biomass and waste,' he explained. Awang Tengah also revealed that Sarawak will be hosting Sarawak Week with the theme 'Sustainability for Tomorrow' at the Malaysia Pavilion for the World Expo Osaka from August 4-10. The Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka spans 2,654.52 square meters across three floors, reflecting the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy. With the theme 'Weaving a Future in Harmony', the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future. The pavilion also serves as a hub for international collaboration and dialogue, as well as pocket talks, product launches, memorandum of understanding signings and business matching sessions. It will also host forums, summits, and networking events that would position Malaysia as a dynamic global partner.
