Sindh to appoint only licensed teachers, says education minister
Sindh's Minister of Education Sardar Ali Shah on Tuesday said that only licensed teachers will be appointed in new recruitments, marking a significant step towards improving the education system in the province. He made these remarks while addressing a teaching license ceremony held at the Chief Minister House in Karachi. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah attended the event as a chief guest. 619 teachers were granted licenses and appointment certificates on this occasion. 'Today is a joyous day for me. The dream I envisioned three years ago has become a reality,' Minister Shah stated. He welcomed this change, saying that 'change is welcomed, provided it is effective.' Sindh: Education allocated Rs613bn He said that the implementation of teaching licenses would bring significant improvement to the education system. He noted that initially, when the concept of licensing was introduced, some people misunderstood it, thinking they were distributing arms licenses to teachers. He clarified that while unlicensed teachers were recruited in the past, as the priority was to ensure schools were operational, all newly recruited teachers will now undergo training and be granted licenses. 'In new recruitments, only licensed teachers will be appointed,' he stated. Sindh govt to establish 500 non-formal education centers The education minister urged teachers to view teaching not merely as a profession but as a service and a responsibility. 'We are preparing the new generation, and for that, trained teachers are indispensable,' he asserted. Shah said he considered himself as not just a minister of education, but an administrator of education, 'making decisions under the guidance of education experts'.

British Council, Sindh government to train 30,000 teachers, impact two million students
ISLAMABAD: The British Council and the Government of Sindh have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to improve English language teaching in public schools, aiming to train 30,000 teachers and indirectly benefit over two million students, according to a statement issued on Friday. English is a compulsory subject in Pakistan's schools and colleges and remains the dominant language in government, academia and the corporate sector. Despite years of formal exposure, however, many students struggle to use the language effectively, raising concerns about the quality and methods of instruction. The new initiative aims to address these challenges by equipping teachers with inclusive and multilingual approaches that support more effective language acquisition. 'This agreement renews our partnership with and commitment to the people and Government of Sindh,' said James Hampson, Country Director, British Council Pakistan. 'Our ambition of supporting 30,000 teachers and 2 million children is a great next step.' Under the agreement, the British Council will deliver its 'English as a Subject for Teachers and Educators' (EaSTE) program to newly inducted primary and early childhood teachers. The collaboration also includes training 1,000 in-service teachers as mentors and deploying a scalable digital Learning Management System (LMS) to facilitate continuous professional support. 'Our focus is not just on access but on quality,' said Sindh Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah at the occasion. 'Through this initiative, we are equipping our teachers with the tools they need to teach English more effectively, in ways that reflect the linguistic and cultural realities of our classrooms.' The program builds on the British Council's long-standing work in education in Pakistan and replicates a successful model from Punjab, where EaSTE reached more than 140,000 teachers.

Lahore board announces schedule for 9th grade annual exams
Listen to article The Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education has confirmed that the 9th-grade annual exams will proceed as per the official date sheet. The exams, scheduled for March 28 and April 4, will be held according to the announced timetable. The spokesperson for the Lahore Board stated that the exam on March 28 will include papers for Quran Translation and Ethics for Non-Muslims. On April 4, students will sit for exams in subjects including Fashion Designing, Art, Model Drawing, Physiology, and Environmental Studies. The announcement reassures students and teachers that the examinations will be conducted smoothly, in accordance with the previously issued schedule. On the other hand, the Sindh Assembly's fact-finding inquiry committee, tasked with investigating objections regarding the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi's (BIEK) XI exam results, has submitted its report. The report identifies irregularities and mismanagement in areas such as assessment, record-keeping, and mark sheets. As a result, the committee has recommended awarding grace marks to all students. Sindh Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah, who chairs the committee, stated that Karachi's education boards have been involved in malpractice for the past eight years and must be reformed. The inquiry, led by Dr. Sarosh Lodhi, Vice-Chancellor of NED University, uncovered significant flaws in the BIEK's operations. The committee has been authorised to hold those responsible accountable. It was recommended that grace marks be added to first-year students' results: 15% in Physics, 20% in Chemistry, and 15% in Mathematics. Shah also called for reforms in the board system and suggested a centralised approach to oversee operations. He criticised the Karachi Intermediate Board for operating like a "mafia" and manipulating results, which has led to poorer performance compared to other boards. The committee's findings and recommendations will be presented to the Chief Minister.
