Rural road upgrades a long-term investment for Sarawakians, says deputy minister

SIBU (Aug 16): Basic infrastructure such as village roads is a long-term investment that delivers significant benefits to the people, said Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii.
He said the federal government has been implementing various development programmes to strengthen essential amenities, particularly in rural areas of Sarawak.
'Good roads not only make residents' daily travel easier, but also improve safety and open up more economic opportunities.
'Therefore, we will continue to strive for allocations and implement such projects in rural areas so that our communities can enjoy progress on par with urban areas,' he said.
Huang was commenting on the 2024 and 2025 Mesra Rakyat Programme (PMR), which will see improvement works carried out on two village road routes in the Sungai Tulai area, Sarikei.
Yesterday, Sarikei Parliamentary Service Centre officer Wong Soon Mee, representing Huang, joined officers from the Sarikei Division Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to inspect the sites.
According to Huang, both projects will be supervised by DID Sarikei Division.
Under PMR 2025, repair works and concrete surfacing will be carried out at Jalan Siung Hwrong and part of Jalan Tong Ah Sungai Tulai.
Meanwhile, PMR 2024 will cover culvert repairs and concrete surfacing at Jalan Wong Sing Ngie and part of Jalan Hap Hing Sungai Tulai.
