Minnesota fisherman who found car tied to 1960s cold case calls discovery "100% luck"

By WCCO reporter Ashley Grams In Sartell, Minnesota, an investigation is underway with ties to a decades-old cold case. Investigators spent hours removing a car that was 20 feet under the Mississippi River on Tuesday, all thanks to a tip. "When he caught the fish, I turned the transducer around and boom, there it was just sitting on the bottom," said Brody Loch, a fisherman from Watkins, Minnesota, who spotted the car. Loch was using a Garmin Livescope — sonar — while fishing over the weekend with a friend. "It was 100% luck," Loch said. "If my buddy wouldn't have caught that walleye, then we would have just kept on floating down and never would have found it." Loch spotted the 1960s-era car for the first time on Saturday, before returning on Sunday with his family to check again. He then called authorities. Police say after processing the vehicle, the Buick's VIN confirms the car belonged to Roy Benn. Benn disappeared in 1967, and his case made headlines, with some outlets reporting that Benn was carrying a large amount of money when he disappeared and was last seen leaving the King's Supper Club. "Looking back at some of the original case files, there was talk of quarries, there was talk of the Mississippi river, but of course, technology in the 1960s is nowhere near what we have now," said Sartell Police Chief Brandon Silgjord. Investigators also found human remains inside the car, and based on evidence so far, believe it to be Benn. "Tons of credit for a fisherman to actually see that and then have the forethought to call the sheriff's office and make that report," Silgjord said. The Benton County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, as law enforcement tries to determine the circumstances of this case. "Artifacts, clothing items, different things like that that will absolutely help in piecing this whole thing together," Silgjord said. Silgjord says investigators have received questions about the cash Benn may have been carrying when he disappeared. "I think perspective needs to be offered sometimes, of what a large amount of cash looked like in 1960 versus now," Silgjord said. "Which very well could have been, from reading some of those original reports, several hundreds of dollars." Loch and Silgjord are both hopeful this find will bring answers to Benn's family.

Human remains found in '60s car submerged in Mississippi River

Human remains found in '60s car submerged in Mississippi River originally appeared on Bring Me The News. Police have confirmed the discovery of human remains in the car found submerged in the Mississippi River near Sartell on Sunday. In an update Wednesday evening, Sartell PD said the remains found in the 1960s Buick sedan pulled from the river near Riverside Avenue is believed to be connected to the case of a man who went missing in 1967. The missing persons case is believed to be that of Roy George Benn, who went missing after eating breakfast at King's Supper Club in Sartell. The Charley Project details he was driving a metallic blue four-door 1963 Buick Electra, but his car was never located. Police say the sedan pulled from the river was "intact but severely deteriorated, had been underwater for decades, and was filled with river sediment." The remains found inside have been sent to the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office for identification and to determine the cause of death. "We thank the Stearns/Benton County Dive Team and Collins Brothers Towing for their work in executing the recovery and raising the vehicle carefully to preserve its structure and potential evidence, as well as the Sartell Fire Department for their support in operations throughout the day and into the night," Sartell PD said. Car found in Mississippi River near central Minnesota town could be tied to 1967 missing persons case

There may be a break in a more than half-century-old cold case after central Minnesota authorities discovered a car submerged in the Mississippi River on Wednesday. The Stearns County sheriff says someone fishing Sunday on the Mississippi River near Sartell spotted what looked like a car on their sonar. The Stearn-Benton County Sheriff's Office Dive Team searched the area and located a car in the river bottom around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Though the car was half full of sediment, the sheriff's office says the dive team was able to determine the car appeared to be from the 1960s era. The sheriff's office contacted a tow company to help remove the car, which remains in the river as of Wednesday afternoon. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the car could be connected to Roy Benn. Benn lived in Sauk Rapids, but was last seen in Sartell on Sept. 24, 1967, driving a blue 1963 Buick Electra. He allegedly had been carrying a "large sum of money" when he was last seen, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Benn, who was 59 when he went missing, was declared dead in 1975. However, the case remains unsolved. There are no other missing person cases of interest in the area that authorities are aware of, officials say. The Sartell Police Department, sheriffs' offices for Benton and Stearns counties will be investigating the matter further.
