I want to make a film that is rewatchable even two decades later: Akhil
has had an eventful first half of the year — writing the story for a Sathyan Anthikad-Mohanlal film and directing his own film with in the lead. The Pachuvum Albhuthavilakkum director is currently on the sets of Sarvam Maya and spoke to us about the film, working with Nivin, and collaborating with his father, and brother, director Anoop Sathyan. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He says, 'Theatre run is based on luck, but I want to make a film that is rewatchable even 20 years down the line.' A rural drama about a ghost My wish to do a rural drama set in a village came true with this film. I was born and brought up in a village. Even my dad hasn't explored that space in years. I've made a film that will prompt people to go back to their rural roots. There are also elements of fantasy in the film, in which a ghost is the main character. 'Nivin and I are scared of horror films' Ask Akhil about the film's tagline 'The Ghost Next Door', and he says, 'It is a version of a ghost. Not a scary ghost.' Interestingly, Akhil doesn't watch a lot of horror films. 'I don't watch horror films, and if I do, I mute them. Nivin is also scared of horror films, so when these two people join for a film with supernatural elements, it definitely won't be a scary movie. However, there are elements of mystery in it, so we can't be blamed if it does scare someone (laughs).' He further says, 'We have used sync sound for the ghost. Sound design is not something we usually give great importance to over here, but we have brought in for this, and honestly, sound design is like the oxygen for a film.' 'Content is key no matter where a film is set' The content and situations have to be engaging. If that works, it doesn't matter if the film is based in a village or city. Whether the film is set in a flat or a village, if you can bring the audience into the screen through the power of writing, then nothing else matters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Nivin has put in a lot of effort to transform' Nivin is very good at playing a hero who gets trapped in situations, and here, he plays exactly that. He has put in a lot of effort to overcome the difficulties he has been through in the past few years. He is as fresh as a washed bowl. We can feel the change, and when we see him through the camera, it's like I'm looking at him from 10 years ago. He has focused on diet, food, etc. While people talk about Nivin's humour, we see his emotional side, too — something we should talk about. I have always wanted to do a film with elements of humour and emotion with him. 'A fresh version of the Nivin-Aju combo' Nivin suggested , who also plays a major role in the film. We were worried it might be a typical combo, but surprisingly, it turned out to be very different. What I feel is that both of them have honed their craft and kept learning over the past 15 years. The output is definitely different and fresh. There is some loud humour in the film, too. Janardhanan uncle is playing a major role in the film — a full-fledged role alongside Nivin. At this age, he has performed so gracefully. The Nivin–Janardhanan combo is very fun to watch, especially with the generational gap between them. 'I know Justin's strength; the output he gives me is very different' I recently worked with Justin in Hridayapoorvam, too. Sarvam Maya is also a musical. And I don't have another option before me because I know Justin's strength. The output he gives me is very different, and that music comes from love. I deal with him the same way I deal with an actor, and all the input he gets about the story reflects in his work. Music is the thread that ties up the story. 'Hridayapoorvam is the first collaboration of all three of us' I'm lucky to have got the chance to write a story for a Sathyan Anthikad- film. At the same time, I was working on Sarvam Maya, too. I also handled the music section of Hridayapoorvam. Anoop also worked in it as the associate director. This is the first collaboration of all three of us. It's not a big drama, but a film with simple themes and a lightweight Mohanlal. It's a clean drama with humour and emotions. We jokingly call it Mohanlal's Premalu. I personally love seeing Lalettan smile and on the last day, he was like… 'Ayyo, is the shoot already done?' Our collaboration (with his father and brother) happened by coincidence. I got an idea and shared it with Achan, who then took it forward. Anoop and I also got the chance to write a few scenes in it.
