Kyle teenager Chloe Wills wins Saskatchewan Amateur women's golf title
Article content HUMBOLDT — Chloe Wills has ditched the hockey stick. Article content For now on, it's golf sticks only. Article content Golf, golf and more golf. Article content The newly crowned Saskatchewan Women's Amateur golf champion — just 17 — will soon be heading south of the border to attend college in Springfield, Missouri, and focus on NCAA Div. 2 golf at Drury University. Article content 'It's getting close,' pointed out Wills, a native of Kyle, who flies out August 8. Article content Article content But, for now, she can celebrate an 'unexpected' provincial women's golf championship at the Humboldt Golf Club. Article content Article content 'I wasn't really coming here expecting to win. I was just hoping to have three solid rounds, which I was able to do. The greens were rolling great. The course played to my advantage.' Article content Wills finished at 1-under-par over the three-round tournament with scores of 70-74-72—216. Article content Kozak had rounds of 74-72-71—217. Article content Wills had been playing hockey, as a forward, for the Swift Current AA Wildcats and, before that, back home in Kyle until the pee wee (U13) ranks, but she is now only focusing on golf. Article content It's a family sport. Article content 'My dad (Curtis Wills) has always been a golfer and he took my brother and I out when we were younger,' offered Wills, whose family has golf memberships at both Saskatchewan Landing and Swift Current, where they've taken junior group lessons, as well as doing a bit golf at home in Kyle. Article content Article content Wills started doing tournaments at age 11. Article content Article content 'Once I started being competitive,' she said, 'I really started to enjoy it.' Article content Winnipeg's Charmaine Hayden (77-76-74—227) placed fourth in the Saskatchewan Amateur, followed by Saskatoon's junior-aged Grace Odnokon (84-72-75—231). Article content Hayden captured the mid-Amateur women's crown for 2025, finishing six shots better than Chaplin's Holly Knudsen. Article content Article content

Golfers tee up in Humboldt for Saskatchewan Amateur men's and women's golf championships
Golfers are teeing up in the Saskatchewan Men's Amateur this week at the Humboldt Golf Club for the first time ever. Article content Up until now, the provincial men's championship event — which runs from Tuesday to Friday this week — had never been played in Humboldt during its 114-year history. Article content Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Women's Amateur returns for a second time and will be played from Tuesday to Thursday. It was also hosted by the Humboldt Golf Club back in 2014. Article content Article content Reigning Saskatchewan Men's Amateur champion Kyle Fisher, from Leduc, Alta., is back to defend his title. Article content Article content Other past Amateur champions in the Humboldt field include Danny Klughart (2019), Justin Wood (2016), David Stewart (2008, 2013). Article content They are joined by provincial junior champions Aricin Franklin (2025), Ryan Mosher (2025), Luke Cote (2023), Chase Pochylko (2022), Corey Bailey (2014), Jesse Gibson (2009) and Stewart (2001, 2002, 2004). Article content On the women's side, 2024 Women's Amateur champion Sela Ogada, of Calgary, won't be back to defend her title. Article content Yorkton's Ella Ella Kozak — who won the 2021 women's amateur and the junior championship last year and also in 2022 — will be the first shot of the women's championship at 2:20 p.m. Article content Carla Odnokon, who won the mid-amateur last year and the Saskatchewan Amateur in 2018, will tee off Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Article content Article content Article content Article content What makes the Humboldt course unique are two distinctively different nine-hole layouts. The course, which originated with nine holes that included sand greens in 1944 and switched to grass greens in 1969, added nine brand-new holes in 2000. Article content The original nine features a number of tree-lined holes and some upside-down saucer-shaped greens that now make up the back nine. Article content For Golf Saskatchewan, this is the largest tournament field of the season with nearly 150 players registered to play. Article content Along with the amateur championship being contested, there are mid-amateurs (for golfers ages 25 and over) for both the men and women. Article content The two women's championships and men's mid-Amateur will be played for three days over 54 holes. Article content The field for the men's amateur championship will be cut down after three rounds and conclude on Friday following 72 holes of play overall.
