Saskatoon police investigating concrete mixer truck rollover

Saskatoon police are investigating a single vehicle rollover involving a concrete mixer truck. According to the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD), the crash was reported around 12:46 p.m., Thursday at the intersection of 22nd Street and Neault Road. Fire crews responded to the scene and observed a fluid leak from the truck, which upon further investigation was determined to be water, posing no environmental hazard. The SFD says the driver, who pulled themselves from the vehicle, was assessed by firefighters and then walked to a Medavie ambulance for a more thorough medical evaluation. The fire department says the scene has been secured and traffic is being rerouted. Drivers are asked to avoid the area. The Saskatoon Police Service has taken over the scene for further investigation.

Saskatoon activates emergency response plan as heat wave hits the city

The soaring temperatures and wildfire smoke have prompted the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) to activate its emergency response plan. According to SFD, the 'extreme heat and air quality emergency response plan' will be activated from July 30 to August 3. Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures to reach up to 28 C on Thursday, with even hotter conditions expected in the coming days, including temperatures of up to 29 C over the weekend, all while local smoke continues to affect air quality. The SFD says extreme heat can cause serious negative health impacts, ranging from dehydration and heat exhaustion to heat stroke and potentially death, especially when indoor temperatures stay above 26 C for extended periods. Residents are advised to take precautions to stay cool and hydrated during this period. The Saskatoon Fire Department shared a list of cool-down locations across Saskatoon, which provides residents with places to escape the heat.

No injuries after pane of glass shatters over Saskatoon Canada Day celebration

WATCH: Saskatoon's Canada Day celebrations were briefly interrupted when a window on Nutrien Tower — the province's tallest building — spontaneously shattered above the crowds. Saskatoon's Canada day celebrations at River Landing were interrupted when a pane of glass from Nutrien Tower shattered and rained down on patrons below. The Saskatoon Fire Department said firefighters were called to the area just before 5 p.m. with reports of glass falling from an exterior window on the 14th floor. Canada Day Saskatoon director Shad Ali said he was just about to take a rest at the festival office and mused to a colleague about cooling off his feet in the water feature at K.W. Nasser Plaza when he saw the glass shatter. 'And then I went, 'it's raining glass,'' he said. 'And we headed outside right away.' No one was injured from the falling glass. Ali said because a command bus was already at the festival site, first responders arrived quickly and were able to clear the scene. Hopewell Real Estate Services — which manages the property — cordoned off the plaza for the remainder of Tuesday's programming, in case more glass continued to fall. Despite an estimated 50,000 to 55,000 people attending the area for the annual party, Ali said patrons and staff calmly and quickly rolled with the disruption to keep things moving along. Shattered glass (Laura Woodward / CTV News) 'Everything went off without a hitch. It didn't really put any kind of a wrinkle in the plans too much,' Ali said. 'We were able to relocate all of our activities under the street or any nearby park areas, and everything worked pretty well.' This isn't the first time glass has shattered and fallen since the towers at River Landing opened to the public nearly four years ago. A boarded-up window can be seen at RBC Tower, and people living in the condominium tower received a letter from the property managed a little more than a month after K.W. Nasser Plaza opened to the public on Aug. 3, 2021, about the risk of glass panels combusting. The letter obtained by CTV News advised people not to lean on glass or railings, and not to attach anything to the glass, and said 'these are isolated fluke incidents.' Hopewell was unable to provide a statement, but a staff member on site said glass breaking or falling from high rise buildings happens more often than people realize.
