Five Punjabi youths rescued from captivity in Colombia after MP Satnam Sandhu's Intervention

Mohali: Five Punjabis who went into a Colombian gang's alleged captivity while trying to enter the US illegally are returning to India after Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu got them rescued by diplomatic intervention. These young men from Punjab's Doaba and Majha regions had reportedly fallen for an agent's promise of better job opportunities in the US, where they were trying to reach via the so-called "donkey or dunki route" — an illicit migration pathway through South and Central America — when a local gang seized them in Capurgana, Colombia and demanded a ransom of $20,000 from each family. Of the victims, Lovedeep Singh, Karandeep Singh, and Ramandeep Singh are from Amritsar, while Gurpreet Singh and Gurnam Singh are from Jalandhar. All except one are in their twenties. After receiving an urgent plea from an acquaintance of the victims, MP Sandhu contacted external affairs minister S Jaishankar and the Indian embassy in Colombia. The ministry responded swiftly, and diplomatic efforts led to the men's release. In a video following their rescue, the men said they had received their passports and were preparing to fly home. "We are safe and will return to our country soon," one said. In a previous video, the group had described their ordeal and pleaded for help, citing torture and abuse. "I raised the issue with the external affairs ministry and shared evidence of the victims' condition," Sandhu said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch Bitcoin và Ethereum - Không cần ví! Sandhu's letter to the MEA urged urgent action, citing the transnational nature of the trafficking operation. He called for tougher enforcement against illegal migration networks and agents who exploit vulnerable youth. "This incident is yet another reminder of the dangers of illegal immigration ," Sandhu said. "There must be strict legal deterrents, better regulation, and widespread awareness to prevent such tragedies." Indian authorities are yet to confirm whether action will be taken against the agent allegedly responsible for the trafficking attempt.

CU terminates agreements with institutions in Turkey, Azerbaijan

The Chandigarh University (CU) on Saturday severed its academic collaborations with 23 Turkish and Azerbaijan Universities in view of the two countries' pro-Pakistan stance amid the recent India-Pakistan hostilities. A day before, Lovely Professional University (LPU) had announced termination of all memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with institutions in the two countries. Rajya Sabha member and CU chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu, said, 'The vision of CU has always remained aligned to the spirit of Nation First and in line with that vision, we have decided to terminate all our educational ties with Turkey and Azerbaijan. Under these 23 MoUs, CU was collaborating with the higher education institutions in Turkiye and Azerbaijan for the exchange of students for regular courses, research, exchange of faculty and staff.' 'It is unfortunate that Turkey and Azerbaijan, despite having received India's goodwill, assistance, and strategic support during difficult times, have now aligned themselves with Pakistan which is known world over for its ties to terrorism,' he added. Sandhu added, 'As has been clearly stated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, perpetrators of terrorism and those helping them won't be spared at any cost. We cannot continue ties with nations which are responsible for taking the lives of our innocent civilians and soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces.'
