In his recent meeting with Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was urged to expand his already significant contributions to India in innovative and impactful ways. That very idea gave birth to the Unnati AI programme – which stands for 'AI for Good'. The objective is not to develop artificial intelligence in isolation, but to teach people how to use it effectively – especially students, and for the nation's progress.'
'A lot like Google, AI is becoming an integral part of our lives. Its use is not limited to generating code or documents; AI can be applied in multiple ways and across sectors. It entirely depends on how you choose to use it – whether in healthcare, student welfare, or any other domain. This is a tremendous opportunity for all of you, as you are studying at the country's first AI-augmented multidisciplinary university. Make full use of the technology and infrastructure available here. We hope that the next Sundar Pichai or Satya Nadella will emerge from this very place,' he added.
Abhishek Tiwari, Founder and Chief Mentor at Venture Mozart, speaking on the theme of AI and startups, said, 'The campus of Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh, is expansive, and I truly admire its architecture. What sets the university apart is its bold and timely initiative of embedding AI into the curriculum. This will greatly benefit students from Uttar Pradesh and beyond, as they gain hands-on exposure to cutting-edge technologies in the classroom – something that was earlier limited to industry use.'
'AI has already become a powerful productivity tool, significantly impacting the job market and transforming industries. In fields like content creation, for instance, it is beginning to replace traditional roles. Going forward, it will be crucial for individuals to convert their skills into monetisable models, as thriving without AI may become increasingly difficult. To succeed, one needs an entrepreneurial mindset and a strong grasp of the right tools. Chandigarh University's approach to integrating AI education is truly transformative – empowering students not just to consume technology, but to create it,' he added.
'While many universities are still exploring how to make India's youth industry-ready in Artificial Intelligence, Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh has taken a pioneering step by establishing the country's first AI-supported campus,' said Lipika Sharma from Microsoft. 'This is a commendable initiative. AI is not here to replace humans, but those who stay updated and skilled in AI will thrive in this era of technological transformation. Chandigarh Universitys collaboration with industry will provide students with valuable exposure, and Microsoft is proud to support this vision by helping students upskill with the latest technologies,' said Lipika Sharma, Microsoft.
Jai Inder Singh Sandhu, Managing Director, Chandigarh University said, 'Chandigarh University Lucknow is set to play a key role in upskilling Indian youth, preparing them to become the next generation of global technology and business leaders. India can build next cybersecurity giants: Accel's Prayank Swaroop

India is at the early stages of a cybersecurity boom, with strong potential to produce global leaders, says Accel partner Prayank Swaroop. Despite over 1,400 startups, only a few are funded or listed. With AI reshaping security, Accel urged Indian founders to seize this $377 billion global opportunity. Tired of too many ads? All about India-U.S. trade: Infographics

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday (July 31, 2025) announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports into the U.S., effective August 1, following a 90-day pause in tariffs announced in April. In a post on the platform Truth Social, he called India's tariffs 'too high' and said that it had 'strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers.' He also criticised India for its fossil fuel trade with Russia. Mr. Trump has been trying to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to stop the three-year ongoing war between the two countries, with no firm deal in sight yet. In this context, here is an overview of the India-U.S. trade. How much does India export to and import from the U.S.? In 2024-25, India's exports to the U.S. were valued over 86,000 million dollars, with imports being over 45,000 million dollars. In terms of percentage, the U.S. made up around 20% of India's exports and 6.3% of its imports. India has always imported more than it exported to the U.S. Exports to the U.S. fell sharply in January this year and have continued to remain below levels not seen after 2022. India exported in March this year the lowest since April 2016. What does India send to the U.S.? India's major exports to the U.S. include telecom equipment, drug formulations and biologicals, textiles, petroleum, iron and steel, pearl and precious stones and more. However, there are variations in the percentage of each of these products that India exports to the U.S. compared to total exports of the product to all countries. For instance, India sends over 63% of all telecom exports to the U.S. For petroleum products, this is 7%. India-Russia trade One of Mr. Trump's criticisms is India's trade with Russia in the area of energy. As part of its opposition to Russia's actions in Ukraine, the European Union along with other Western countries imposed sanctions on Russian goods and individuals, and cut down on its imports of Russian energy after 2022. However, India increased its imports of Russian energy from around 2% of total Russian exports to over 20% in response to cheaper prices of discounted Russian oil. In a media briefing on Friday (August 1, 2025), the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that decisions regarding the sourcing of energy were 'based on the price at which oil is available in the international market and depending on the global situation at that time.' Similarly, External Affairs Minister said in 2023 that the country had to source oil where it was cheapest. He pointed out that European countries are 'diverting production out of the Middle East and raising prices.' Besides energy imports, India's imports of Russian military equipment was another of Mr. Trump's complaints. In 2024, India imported around 40% of its military imports from Russia. Exports to India made up 34% of Russia's total exports. According to SIPRI, Russia was the top supplier to India, followed by France and Israel in 2024. However, Indian sources told Reuters that the country was looking to pivot away from Russian arms since Russia's munitions were depleted due to its war with Ukraine. This also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' programme to boost domestic production. On military procurement, Mr. Jaiswal said sourcing was determined 'solely by our national security imperatives and strategic assessments' on Friday. (With inputs from Reuters)

Indian company offers visas for ₹1: Is US visa available? What about UK, Schengen? All your questions, answered

Atlys gave visas for free last year. According to CEO Mohak Nahta, it was great for travellers, not so great for the team. This year, they're being 'less generous'. The travel tech company now offers visas for ₹ 1 only. Here's how it works: Atlys' offer is for Indian residents who have valid Indian passports and apply directly through the company website. It does not apply if you use an agent or a third party. You can apply for only one visa under this offer. If you add family members, regular visa charges will apply for them. The offer does not apply to group, bulk or business bookings. To apply, you must upload your valid Indian passport and a passport-size photo. Depending on the rules of the destination country, you should also upload other required documents like financial proof or travel bookings. The embassy sets document rules, not the company. So, if your documents are incorrect or incomplete, your visa may be rejected. Visa appointments are not guaranteed as slots are controlled by embassies. To get the ₹ 1 visa offer, you must complete and submit your application between August 4 (6 AM IST) and August 5 2025 (11:59 PM IST). Slots are not served on a first-come, first-served basis. It rather depends on who finishes the process first. Selfie verification on the company website is compulsory. For some e-Visa countries, ₹ 1 may cover both the Atlys service fee and the government fee. For in-person visa countries, only the Atlys fee is covered, unless mentioned otherwise. UK visas are fully covered as a special case. For US and Schengen visas, the ₹ 1 offer includes only the Atlys service and appointment fees. The applicant must pay government charges like visa and biometric fees. The list of countries included is available on the Atlys website. This offer is only for self-applications and may end anytime, depending on availability. Some destinations are not part of this offer due to low visa approval rates or limited appointment slots. You can check if your destination is included by visiting the country page on
