Center position ‘still a competition' for Tennessee ahead of 2025 football season
Tennessee practiced Tuesday at Haslam Field ahead of its first game to kick off the 2025 season on Aug. 30. The Vols will face Syracuse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia (noon EDT, ABC).
Head coach Josh Heupel discussed the Vols' center competition between redshirt sophomore Sam Pendleton and redshirt freshman William Satterwhite.
'Both of those guys have competed,' Heupel said. 'Really grown here during the course of our practices. Still a competition. You're going to need both of them as we get through the fall, too.'
Pendleton transferred from Notre Dame following the 2024 season. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound redshirt sophomore appeared in 16 games, including seven starts, at Notre Dame from 2023-24.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Satterwhite appeared in three contests during his first season at Tennessee in 2024. He played in games against Chattanooga, North Carolina State and Kent State. Satterwhite totaled 45 offensive snaps at center for the Vols. He was named to the 2024 SEC Academic Honor Roll.
