Aaron-Wooi Yik storm into Singapore Open final
PETALING JAYA: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik stayed on course for another title after battling past India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty to reach the men's doubles final at the Singapore Open. The world No. 5 pair showed nerves early on in the semi-final clash at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday (May 31), allowing the Indian duo to draw first blood. But Aaron-Wooi Yik roared back in the second game, stepping up their intensity to force a decider. The Malaysians looked to be cruising in the rubber set when they opened up a seven-point lead, only to let their opponents claw back into contention. But a decisive smash from Wooi Yik finally sealed a hard-fought 19-21, 21-10, 21-18 victory after 63 minutes. This marks their fourth consecutive final appearance, including their title run at the Asian Championships in Ningbo in April. Standing in their way in Sunday's final are South Koreans Seo Seung-jae-Kim Won-ho, who earlier overcame Denmark's Kim Astrup-Anders Skarrup Rasmussen in the other semi-final.

Badminton: World No. 1 pair Sze Fei-Izzuddin bow out in quarter-finals of Singapore Open
PETALING JAYA: It was a disappointing end to the Singapore Open campaign for world No. 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who bowed out in the quarter-finals after losing to India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty on Friday (May 30). Second seeds Sze Fei-Izzuddin had been hoping for a deeper run in the tournament, but the Indian duo, coached by Tan Kim Her, proved to be the stronger pair on the day. Satwiksairaj-Chirag, who were recently back from injury, needed just 39 minutes to clinch a 21-17, 21-15 victory. It was also the end of the road for men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao, who was unable to maintain the momentum from his earlier rounds. He went down 13-21, 11-21 to Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in 47 minutes. Earlier, top seeds in the mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, were also sent packing after a 21-19, 20-22, 17-21 defeat to Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran.

World No. 1 Size Fei-Izzuddin crash out of Singapore Open
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were brought back down to earth after suffering a quarter-final exit at the Singapore Open on Friday. The Malaysians couldn't find answers against India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, going down 21-17, 21-15 in a clash between the current and former world No. 1s. The defeat could prove costly, with their reign at the top potentially short-lived. With a slender gap in points separating them from Denmark's Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen — the pair they overtook earlier this week — the Sze Fei-Izzuddin could relinquish their No. 1 spot if the Danes reach the final or beyond on Sunday.

Satwiksairaj-Chirag's absence leaves India with uphill task
PETALING JAYA: India have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the Sudirman Cup after top men's doubles shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty withdrew from the team meet due to illness. Former world No. 1 pair Satwiksairaj-Chirag have struggled with injuries since the Paris Olympics last August and their withdrawal from the team meet is yet another setback for them. The duo, who are currently ranked No. 11, played an important role in helping India clinch a historic Thomas Cup crown in 2022 and their absence is a blow to their team's chances of progressing far in the Sudirman Cup which starts on Sunday in Xiamen, China. In Satwiksairaj-Chirag's absence, India only have inexperienced pair A. Hariharan-R. Ruban Kumar in the men's doubles as the Badminton Association of India (BAI) have opted against naming a replacement. No go: India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty are down with illness. The talismanic pair's withdrawal leaves India facing an uphill task to survive Group D which also includes Indonesia, Denmark and England. Only the top two teams will progress to the last eight. Earlier, India also lost the services of top women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand who pulled out due to injury. Youngsters Shruthi Mishra-Priya Konjengbam face a tough battle to fill the void left behind by world No. 10 Treesa-Gayatri. India will be relying heavily on experienced stars Lakshya Sen, H. S. Prannoy (men's singles) and P. V. Sindhu (women's singles) for the points. World No. 17 mixed doubles pair Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto will also be hoping to pull off a few upsets. India were knocked out of the group stage in the last three editions (2019, 2021 and 2023) and last made it into the quarter-finals in 2017 where they lost to China.
