Price Tag for New York Jets' Star Sauce Gardner Revealed
Price Tag for New York Jets' Star Sauce Gardner Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets seemingly struck gold with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, when they selected two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. The Jets picked up a pair of Pro Bowlers in the first round that season with Gardner and Jermaine Johnson II, as well as standout receiver Garrett Wilson. Advertisement Now, all three players are extension-eligible, as is running back Breece Hall. The Jets will have to hand out a few hefty checks to keep their stars in town longterm, and Gardner's price tag is going to be sky-high, and it keeps going up and up. ESPN's Rich Cimini recently revealed that Gardner wants to remain a Jet, and has a price tag in mind. "Gardner has professed his desire to stay with the Jets long-term," Cimini wrote this week. "The Texans' Derek Stingley Jr. raised the ceiling with his three-year, $90 million extension. Gardner is thought to be seeking at least that much." The Jets seemingly want to get a deal done with Gardner, who was one of the best players in the NFL in his first two NFL seasons. Gardner had a down year in 2024, which may have the Jets a touch apprehensive to hand out a $30 million salary. Advertisement But Gardner has showcased all-world talent at cornerback. Gardner led the NFL in pass breakups in his rookie campaign, with 20. In 2024, Gardner had just one interception and nine pass breakups, and a career-low 49 tackles and one tackle for loss. "Gardner was an All-Pro in each of his first two seasons, but his play tailed off last season, as it did for many of the Jets' defenders," Cimini wrote. "Nevertheless, he's still regarded as one of the top corners, an essential position in coach Aaron Glenn's man-heavy scheme." Contracts in the NFL can tend to be a crapshoot, with injuries and scheme changes potentially leading to up-and-down play, but Gardner's talent is undeniable. It's not often you come across a player with that level of talent at corner, and the two seasons of elite play likely outweigh the risks of declined play. Garrett Wilson is looking for a new deal and more wins, but says he hopes he's 'a Jet for life'
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Garrett Wilson has put up the type of receiving numbers few New York Jets players have. And in some cases, he's all alone in the team's record book. At just 24 and entering his fourth NFL season, the star wide receiver is looking for even more — catches, wins and a new contract. 'You know, I'm hopeful I'm a Jet for life,' Wilson said Wednesday after the Jets' first practice of organized team activities open to reporters. 'And that we get this thing rolling and that all of our best days are ahead of us.' Last month, the Jets exercised the fifth-year contract options for all three of their 2022 first-round draft picks, including Wilson, cornerback Sauce Gardner and edge rusher Jermaine Johnson. Wilson, the 10th overall selection that year — six picks after Gardner — would be due about $16.8 million in 2026, according to Over the Cap's projections. But Wilson acknowledged he and the Jets have had a few discussions 'here and there' about a contract extension, which he said would be 'a cherry on top' — one that could presumably make him among the richest wide receivers in the league. 'When the time does come and those conversations are being had,' he said, 'I'm going to try to do my part to make sure that it's undeniable.' With what he has accomplished so far, it would be tough to argue against him. Wilson was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2022 and, despite inconsistent quarterback play, has more than 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first three seasons — the first player in franchise history to do so. He has 279 catches for 3,249 yards and 14 touchdowns and is the first Jets player with three consecutive seasons of 80 or more receptions. And new coach Aaron Glenn doesn't anticipate that game plan changing. 'Give him the ball as much as possible, that's it,' Glenn said. 'That's awesome to hear,' Wilson said. 'But there's a lot of stuff that comes with it that it sparks in my head, too.' This season, he'll be reunited with his former college quarterback with Justin Fields set to be New York's starter. The two were teammates at Ohio State, with Wilson catching 66 passes from Wilson for 1,031 yards and nine touchdowns over 22 games during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. 'I didn't think we'd get this opportunity on this level,' Wilson said. 'So it's exciting. I'm still taking it in all the way. It's cool, it's cool. We've been definitely picking up where we left off.' That's a good sign for Wilson, who appeared a bit frustrated last season — particularly after then-quarterback Aaron Rodgers targeted Davante Adams more regularly down the stretch of New York's 5-12 season. While Wilson finished with career highs in catches (101), yards receiving (1,104) and touchdowns (seven), he had just two TD receptions in the last eight games and only one game during that stretch of 100 or more yards receiving. 'Yeah, as far as coming into this season, man, I don't ever forget the fact, no matter how bad it may seem, how ugly my face may look at that moment, bro, it's a blessing to do what I do,' Wilson said. 'And to have another opportunity to make right on what we did last year and what I did last year, that's enough for me, right? 'I have an opportunity coming up and as a competitor, as someone that loves football, that's all I need. I'm excited to be out here because this team believed in me initially. They still believe in me. And we have the opportunity to do something special.' Glenn said the Jets had 100% player attendance for the team's first OTA practice Tuesday and believed that was again the case Wednesday. That includes Wilson, who could have chosen to sit out the voluntary portion of the offseason while he tries to get a new deal. 'I want to be a part of something special,' he said. 'I don't think that a whole bunch of individuals makes something special. As a group aspect, this is a group thing and I wanted to get in and know my teammates. I want to get in to know my coaches, even. This is a new staff. Learn the material that they're putting out and not be the guy that's behind when this thing is mandatory (in minicamp in June), right? 'There's a way you go about business when you love what you do.' ___ AP NFL:

Will Jets Bench Overpaid Free Agent from Starting Lineup?
The New York Jets may have just spent a lot of money on a cornerback who could be a backup come Week 1. The Jets went into free agency with a clear mission of finding a starting-caliber boundary cornerback to start opposite of Sauce Gardner. Advertisement Just over two months ago, New York signed Baltimore Ravens free agent Brandon Stephens to a contract that makes you think they are committed to pairing him with Gardner for the long haul. His deal was worth $36 million ($22.9 million guaranteed) over three seasons. That marks the second-largest contract given out by the Jets this offseason, behind only new starting quarterback Justin Fields. Stephens' deal, however, is the longest commitment, with Fields' just at two years and all others set at one-year rentals. Sounds like they found their guy, right? Well, the move was greeted with a lot of initial skepticism from pundits online. Advertisement That includes Bleacher Report's Matt Holder, who is now predicting that Stephens won't even crack New York's starting lineup. 'The defense is looking at having at least one new starter at safety and cornerback. While free-agent signing Brandon Stephens is the favorite to start opposite Gardner, don't sleep on [Qwan'tez] Stiggers, who was a CFL All-Star and Rookie of the Year in 2023,' Holder explained. Holder had Qwan'tez Stiggers in the lineup at outside corner after he played in 14 games with one start last season with the Jets. The nickel corner spot was taken by Michael Carter II. Other free agent signings in the running for a starting job are defensive backs Isaiah Oliver and Kris Boyd. More criticism of Stephens' contract refers to his production in recent years not matching the money he was given, calling out the Jets for a massive over-pay. Advertisement Stephens' deal currently puts him as the 24th highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. "Yet, his body of work does not put him anywhere close to that tier of the position,' Michael Nania writes on Jets X-Factor. After he was a 2021 third-round draft pick out of SMU, Stephens has totaled 259 tackles, 32 passes defended and two interceptions. Last season, Stephens graded at a below-average 55.8 overall and a disastrous 50.7 in coverage, according to Pro Football Focus. Diving deeper you'll find that Stephens allowed 65-of-96 passes thrown his way to be caught (67.7%). His 806 yards allowed were the second-most among all cornerbacks in the NFL last season. All 222 of them. Advertisement Before his departure, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta sounded pretty non-committal about his free agent. "B-Steve' is a great pro – an awesome attitude, a great teammate. He'd probably say he didn't have as good a year this year, but his attitude never wavered. … He's a free agent, so there is a lot of pressure on him in his mind. We'll have to see what happens with him." What happened? The New York Jets threw him a bag. For $12 million a season, $36 million over three years, and nearly $23 million guaranteed? Fans better hope what happens next is Stephens proves his contract's worth with improved play this season. Advertisement That is, assuming New York will try to get their money's worth by putting him in the starting lineup. After all, new head coach Aaron Glenn is one of the franchise's best cornerbacks ever. Maybe he can fix Stephens' game. If not? The Jets may have the most expensive backup cornerback in the NFL.
