Chase and Status bring perfect mix of epic tunes to storm gig at Co-op Live

Chase & Status, Co-op Live, Manchester As the sun set on a gloriously, sweltering day in Manchester, the city's Co-op Live was packed to the rafters and ready to party. It might not have been quite as hot as the desert of Coachella, but Chase & Status continued their 2025 gigs with all the fire you'd expect from electronic music trailblazers Saul Milton and Will Kennard. The London duo were back in the city that holds a special place in their hearts on Thursday night, for a gig of the most epic proportions. The tunes came thick and fast for 90 minutes, blending the older and new songs to absolute perfection. Flames and lasers shot out across a stadium that bounced and raved, seemingly without a care in the world, as belter after belter delighted the crowd of thousands. With Saul and Will DJ-ing firmly behind their signature light-up 'C' and 'S', a host of show-stopping MCs kept the night flowing: 'We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the beautiful people of Manchester. Make some noise for yourselves!', before launching into Blind Faith. This is Chase and Status live. — Chase & Status (@chaseandstatus) May 2, 2025 Other songs on the setlist from the 2011 album No More Idols included the gloriously angry Let You Go, party-starting No Problem, and delightfully depressing End Credits. The thing that Chase & Status do so beautifully, along with their collaborators, is blend great lyrics with drum n bass, dance, rave, and jungle, creating big beats like no other. And a word to the venue. This is the fourth time I've been to the Co-op Live, and I'd say this gig was the one that really showed it off. Hats off to Chase & Status for the epic production because they brought it – but the incredible acoustics of the arena along with the pyrotechnics and lights was next level. And they were there in spades. I hardly saw a single person sat down for the duration of the gig. The number one with Stormzy adorning the screens – Backbone - was obviously a highlight as was Becky Hill collab Disconnect, and Liquor and Cigarettes with ArrDee giving it large on stage. Too many to mention but a final shout-out goes to support act 4am Kru, what a warm-up. They made the stage their own and with a crew as solid as Chase & Status, that was a hard act to follow. An incredible night, if you've got a ticket for the rest of the tour then you're in for a treat. Chase & Status, Hydro, Glasgow ★★★ A full 20 years into their career, Chase & Status, aka electronica duo Saul Milton and Will Kennard, finally hit the top of the charts last year with their Stormzy collaboration Backbone. That merited some serious pyrotechnics, launched onstage and above the crowd to open their latest arena tour and herald the arrival of a group who are never knowingly understated. Pumping party tunes, particularly with a rumbling jungle or hip-hop base, are their signature. There is a clear debt to The Prodigy in their electro bombast, murky bass drops, baritone raps and slogans writ large, though they pass on the politicised edge and lack the righteous anthems. It takes a village, not to mention a fair bit of smoke and mirrors, to create this performance. The duo have employed a roll call of guest vocalists and rappers over the years - most of whom couldn't be here tonight but popped up in sampled form - while a coterie of rappers and singers deputised elsewhere and trusty drummer Andy Gangadeen provided the live spark. Across 90 minutes, they delivered a barrage of turbo-charged dancehall dub and formulaic but efficient drum'n'bass, diverging into the metal-tipped big beat of Don't Be Scared and the infectious, wiggy character of Liquor & Cigarettes, only one of a number of tracks dedicated to escapism. The best of these was the (onscreen) Becky Hill-featuring Disconnect - which did the very opposite.
